APPEAL. DAT.
Large Attendance of Pretentlng Tax
Payers. This morning at 9 o'clock was the time
set by the county commissioners for hear
ing appeals of tax-payers of the First,
Second and Third wards fiem the taxes
assessed against them by the assessors
acting under erdcis of the commissioners.
Soen after 9 o'clock a large number of
property owners assembled at the county
commissioners' office, but it was net until
half-past 10 o'clock that the commis
sioners met te hear the appeals. It will
be recollected that most of the assessors of
the several districts, in making the tri
ennial assessment for 1880 considerably
reduced the assessment as levied three
years age and in force last year, and
that the county commissioners, believiug
that some of these reductions were tee
heavy, and in some cases unfair, issued an
order te the assessors te increase their
assessments. Belew we print the figures
of the assessments in the First,Second and
Third wards for the years 1879 and 1880,
and the deductions made by the assessors :

The commissioners returned the asses
sirs their books and directed them te add
t their assessments the following sums :
First waid $207,000 ; Second ward $144,
000 ; Third ward $131,000.
When the First ward was called, this
morning, the assessor, A. C. Welchans
informed the commissioners that he had
net added te his assessment the $207,000
as directed by the commissioners. He be
lieved his assessment te be correct, as he
eiiginally made it up and he declined te
change the figures. The commissiener.11,
thereupon refused te accept Mr. "Welchans' s
book, and dismissed the appellants, a large
number of whom were in attendance.
Joel L. Haines, assessor of the Third
ward, made a statement te the commis
sioners, te the effect that he had been re
vising his assessment in accordance with
the instructions of the commissioners, but
that he had net had time te complete it,
and asked for an extension of time. This
was granted by the commissioners, and
the appellants were dismissed.
Geerge 11. Mowrey, assessor of the Sec
ond ward, was en hand with his revised as
sessment, and a large number of taxpayers
of the ward were en hand also, te show
cause why their assessment should net be
increased as proposed by the commission
ers. It is understood that Assessor Mow Mew
e -y, for the purpose of raising the addition
al $144,000 in his ward, added six per
cent valuation te all property that would
K-ar such an increase ; but he still
found himself $30,000 or $40,000 short, and
te make up this amount he made a second
revision, adding a further increase te the
'-big prepei ties" of the ward. By this
increased valuation some of the properties
are assessed at mere than was paid for
them at a time when real estate brought
one-third mere than it new brings in the
uiaiket.

The M.iMiiiercher Concert an 1 Masquerade.
Last evening the Lancaster Mamucrcher
gave in their hall a grand concert and mas
querade ball. The entertainment was at
tended by a large number of the members
and their wives and daughters, and was a
very pleasant allair throughout. The
musical part of the pregrammes was of the
high order for which the Mamncrcher
has long been noted. The dancing and
waltzing was graceful and the masquerade
attractive.
The Humane Ball.
The ball of the Humane fire company
held last night in Rethwciler's hall was an
immense affair, the crowd being se great
that it was impossible for all ticket-holders
te be in the room at the same time. Xot Xet
with standing the great crowd, however,
geed order was preserved and a geed feel
ing pervaded all present. Jlauy prominent
politicians were present, among them
Mayer MacGonigle and Candidate Bering.

Frem "te-day, Feb. 10, the direct mail
pouches for West Willow, Rcften, New
Providence and Quarryville posteflices will
be forwarded en train leaving Lancaster at
.1:10 instead of 8:20 p. m., as heretofore.
Mails for these offices will close at Lancas
ter posteffice at 4:10 p. m.
This change, secured by Postmaster Mar
shall at the request of Gee. W. Hcnsel,
esq., of Quarryville, greatly improves the
postal accommodations at that office.
Heretofore the evening mail reached there
about 9:20 and was net opened nor deliv
ered that evening. Patrons had te wait un
til next morning for their mail matter and
often failed te receive important letters in
time te awcr them by the early morning
mail. Hereafter they will get their even
ing mail about 7 o'clock.
A Colored Jurer.
James Cooper, an intelligent-looking
colored man, from Little Britain, is serv
ing in our courts as a juryman this week,
and he was called for the first time ou a
jury this morning. Among the persons
called en the jury was Hen. Jehn II. Lan
dis, member of the Legislature. Mr
Landis was "cut" by the counsel; Mr.
Cooper was sworn and took the seat va
cated by the legislator.
Flerida Oranges.
"Uncle Mike" Zahm, from his winter
residence in Flerida, son ds the editorial
room of the Intelligencer a dozen
luscious oranges, sound and sweet. May
the Lancaster folks in the laud of flowers
and fruits have a happy sojourn and safe
return te home and friends.
Hummers.
The mayor's levee this morning was
attend by nine "bums" who last night
sought the friendly comfort of the station
house te secure a warm night's rest. They
were breakfasted this merajng and discharged.
Will Practice taw Here.
David Leche, esq., whose admission te
the Lancaster bar from the Columbia
county bar has been previously noticed,
will locate in this city for the practice of
his profession. Mr. Leche was formerly a
resident of the eastern part of the county
his mother new residing in Strasburg
and is a grandson of the late Dr. Sample,
of Soudersburg. He is a young gentleman
of fine attainments and geed professional
premise.
Irish Keller Subscriptions.
A collection at St. Mary's Catholic
church en Sunday netted ever $300 for the
sufferers from the famine in Ireland ; since
then Mr. Michael Malene sent in $100 for
the same cause and ether contributions
swelled the collection by several hundred
dollars.
Hen. II. G. Leng has left $20 with the
mayor for the same geed cause.
Unger Broken.
Frank Harry, who lives en Old Factory
read, near the Conestoga creek, had one
of his little fingers crushed and the bone
broken yesterdav, while engaged in un
leading ice at the ice house of Geerge R.
Erisman, Christian street, near Grant. Dr.
Gee. R. Welchans set the broken bone and
dressed the wound.
Paralysis.
Mrs. Samuel King, of Soudersburg, an
aged Amish woman, was stricken with
paralysis, yesterday, and is lying at the
point of death.
Hen. Wm. Hamilton, of Williamstown,
who was stricken with paralysis a week
age, as has been heretofore reported, is
gradually sinking and it is believed he can
not recover.

beautiful young English actress, Miss Nard
Alinaynu. During the troupe's stay of a week

Albany, Feb. 10. A fire broke out this
morning about 4 o'clock in the county
clerk's office, city hall building, and is at
10:30 a.m. still burning. The eutiie in
terior of the building is consumed, but the
massive marble walls still stand. "When
the dome fell seven men men were crushed,
one of whom, named Keller, a member of
the fire department, has since died, and
two or three ethers are expected te die.
Ne accurate estimate of the less is atthis
time possible, but it is thought it will ex
ceed $100,000. The judgment records,
chattel mortgages and records of the su
pervisors are destroyed. The records of
deeds and mortgages en real estate, the
portraits of governors, and the books and
papers of the surrogate's office are saved.
Steps have already been taken by the
Legislature te provide places for holding
the courts which were located in the
building.

Tlie Theatre Koyal Completely Destroyed
and Eight Lives Lest in Yesterday's
Fire in Dublin.
Dublin, Feb. 10. One woman and
seven men were killed and thirteen injured
by the burning of the Theatre Royal yes
terday. Everything in the building was
consumed, including a large and costly
wardrobe. The theatre took fire from a
light in the hands of a boy who was light
ing the gas. Most of the employees were
at dinner at the time and the llames spread
rapidly. Manager Egerten lest his life by
remaining tee long in the building in try
ing te an est the llames.

Windser Quebec, Feb. 10. An explo
sion of boilers in the mills belonging te the
Canada paper company occurred this morn
ing. Three men were badly if net fatally
injured by steam and bleach liquor and
two were killed. The pump mill took fire
and was destroyed. The lire has been
brought under control.
