In the whole transaction the judge lias assumed powers which arc foreign te his office, and he will find that in this country, editors have rights as well as judges, and, as guardians of the public interests, they can criticise the public acts of men who arc entrusted with legal powers. In no branch of the government service can the eye of the people peer with mere keen sense of duty than when it watches the law's progress as guided and influenced by the judges, who are presumed te be un biased. They will held (his right until forced te relinquish it. A Cumberland Valley View. Carlisle Herald. Geed citizens will net dispute, 1st, that, if Judge Patterson was actuated by the motive insinuated by Messrs. Steinman and Hcnsel, the people of Lancaster county, whose servant he is, have a right te be in formed of it by whoever is courageous enough te give the information. 2d. That whether Judge Patterson was in faet actu ated by such motive, Judge- Patterson is precisely that person who is net compe tent te determine. Ne principle of the common law is better established than that a man shall net sit in his own cause. Necessarily involved in the Lancaster case is the question whether Judge Patterson was governed by an unworthy motive, en a particular occa sion. Is Judge Patterson the party te sav he was net? If he has the right te entertain this case of contempt at all, it must be en theory the Messrs. Hen sel and .Steinman must be punished, whether Judge Patterson was influenced by the feeling charged or net. But even then, hew monstrous te permit the person who is individually insulted and offended te determine en the quality and quantity of punishment te be meted out te the offender ! In ordinary centempts, the ellenec is net directed against the per son of the judge, but against the machin ery, the methods, the principles, of the ad ministration of justice. Only a man obtuse te every feeling of refinement, proud, self ish and unblushing, would dare in the face of fair-minded and intelligent people te ar rogate the right te decide hew severely shall be punished the sin of asserting, per haps with overwhelming proof, that him self has been influenced by an unweithy motive. A Rig Rile. Leck Haven Democrat. Messrs. Steinman and llensel, lawyers of Lancaster and editors of the Ixtelm r.KMKit, published strictures upon Judge Patterson for what they believed te be un becoming leniency towards a prisoner of political influence. The judge took them te account and tried te strike them from the list of attorneys. This they resisted, and claimed that they acted as editors in their criticism, and that it was done in ac cordance with rights guaranteed te the press by the constitution. The case has been argued, but the judge has net ren dered his decision. He was touched en a tender spot by the strictures, and with mere passion than judgment sought te punish these editors as lawyers. In this he overreached himself, and, in homely phrase, has " bitten off mere than he can chaw. Editors and Judges. Kric Ob.-crvcr. Me.ssrs.licnscl and Steinman, the editors of the Lancaster Intelligence"., have boldly met the issue, and deserve the thanks of the press for upholding one of the most .sacred rights of the citizen. In proof of the curative powers et Reigart's Old Brandy, In cases et Dyspepsia, we can summon niiin; bcrs of witnesses one case in particular we cite: A hard-working farmer had been aillicted with an exhaustive Dyspepsia ler a number of years; his stomach would reject almost every kind of feed; he had sour eructatiens con stantly ue appetite in fact, he was obliged te restrict his diet te crackers and stale bread, and as it beverage he used McGmnn's Beet licer. lie Is a Methodist, and then, as new, preached at times, and in his discourses often declaimed earnestly against all kinds of strong drink. When advised te try Reigart's Old Brandy, In his case, he looked up with astonishment, but after hearing of its wonderful ellects in the cases of some of his near acquaintances, he at last consented te fellow our advice. lie used the Brandy faithfully anil steadily; the lirst bottle giving him an appetite, ami before the second was taken he was a sound man.with a stomach capable or digesting anything which he chose te eat.
