Before Judge rattersen.
In the case of Themas Furniss vs. II. X.
Biencman, the defendant was called and
he corroborated Seuscnig in regard te the
note being made te accommodate Furniss,
who desired te be Grissingcr's clerk ; wit
ness also understood that he was te incur
no liability by endorsing tlic note.
In rebuttal Furniss was called and he
testified that the first he saw of this check
was when Kendig brought it te him and
told him te take it. lie took it, as Mr.
Brcncman's name was en it as endorser.
Previous te this Scnsenig had asked him
whether he would take Kendig's check ;
he said he would net ; Scnsenig then asked
him whether he would take it if Brcne
inan would endorse it ; he said he would,
and did take it as payment of taxes.
II. S. Kendig was recalled and he testi
fied that Brencman came te him and told
him if he (Kendig) did net iay the check
he would have te de se. This was denied
by Bicnemau who stated in sur-rcbuttal
that he never said he would have te pay it.
Steve Grissingcr was called, who stated
that Furniss came te him in August of that
year and asked him te sign a paper agree
ing te pay Scnsenig $2000 in case of his
election and te make him (Furniss) his
clerk. This he ic fused te de.
The case was given te tlu jury shortly
before 12 o'clock te-day when they retired
and rcndeicd a verdict in favor of the de
fendant. In the case of Jehn Staley vs. William
Wisner and Geerge Wall, the rule for a
new trial was discharged.

II. Moere, the jury after being out from
yesterday forenoon until this morning at 2
o'clock, returned a verdict in favor of the
defendant.
Abraham E. Leng and Susan Leng vs.
Pennsylvania railroad company. The
plaintitl's are the owners of a farm situated
en the Hue of the defendant's railroad,
near Bird-in-Haud. In 1877 the read Hue
was straightened and repaired, and there
fore cut into their land, damaging it, as
tliey allege, te "thc amount of 32,000 by
making excavation embankment and by
interfering with their use te a private

The writ of csticpcmcnt filed against
Peters & Shiik, lessees of the
Heaver street cotton mill by Benjamin F.
Shenk, ct. al., owners of the same, was dis
solved this afternoon en condition that the

Beginning en the last Wednesday in the

Dr. M. Fricse, a well-known homeopath
ic physician residing en Third street near
Pine, Harrisburg, who has been ill for
some time, died at the St. Cloud hotel,
Philadelphia, yesterday morning.
Over in Lehigh county the Buck Hern
tavern keeper would net give a crowd of
drunken men whisky. Se they exploded
three pounds of gun powder right outside
the deer of the side room where the young
folks were having a dance.
Daniel G. Michael, a highly respected
citizen of Aberdeen, Harford county, Md.,
died after a short illness with pneumonia,
en the 27th ult. His only son is Kev. Alon Alen Alon

Adams county is likely te have a Cop Cep
pervillc. This new copper field has lately
been thoroughly examined by a Bosten
geologist, and Bosten capitalists arc
already securing interests and have com
menced mining en the Heed farm, near
Monterey Springs.
Mr. Jeseph Clark, the founder of the
Dillsburg Bulletin, was killed en Monday
by a train of the II. & P. 11. It. near the
junction of the Dillsburg branch of the
Cumberland Valley railroad, Mr. Clark
was walking en the track, and being very
deaf did net hear the whistle, and before
the train could be stepped, the engine
struck him about the head, knocked him
ever, and in doing s-e cutoU'ene of his legs
and split his skull.
The failure of the Senate te confirm the
nominations of Dr. Sherwood in the First
Jeseph Samson in the Second, and General
Clark in the Fifth census districts, will ne
cessitate new apeintments for these places,
as Hayes and the secretary of the interior
have been informed that these gentlemen
were objectionable te the Senate. The
names originally en the 1K1, and agreed te
by the senators for these district, were
General Beath for the First, Mr. Snowden,
of Chester, for the Second, and Mr. Dun

This afternoon Henry Ernst, a boy re
siding in this city, was taken befereJudgcs
Patterson and Livingston by his mother,
who complained that he was incorrigible
and she is unable te control him. He
was ordered te be taken te the house of
refuge.

Last evening Prof. Coeke and Miss
Saleme Crawford, expositors of " spirit
ualism" tricks, appeared in the opera
house before a small audience. Their en
tertainment is leally wonderful and they
were deserving of a larger house. The
committee, appointed te see that every
thing was fairlv done consisted of Prof.
J. P. McCaskey, Dr. S. T. Davis, B. F.
W. Urban, Cel. Teller, James Stewart and
Prof. Lippett. A large number of tricks
were performed in a skillful manner, one
of which was the changing of wine te
water and then pouting both from the same
pitcher. A deck of cards was handed
around the audience by the professor,
any person being allowed te select one.
Miss Crawford was then able te name the
card held by each person. The professor
went through the performance of tying
and unloosing himself. A number of
ether tricks were performed, but the most
wonderful part of the entertainment was
answering of questions, given by the au
dience, by Miss Crawford. Slips of paper
were given te persons in the audience
and en them questions were written.
These were kept in the possession of the
writers and Miss Crawford from the
stage told what the questions wcre
and gave their answers. Seme
of the questions propounded were as fol fel
lows : Who will be the Democratic
candidate for president? Answer, "Til
den.' "Hew will the delegation from
Lancaster county vote at Harrisburg?'
Answer, "Fer Grant.' " Who will be
our next mayor?' Answer, "Thepicsent
incumbent "' Several ethers were coi cei

these parties when they will expose a num
ber of tricks. They will also show the

A Celd Hath.
Iii Harrisburg yesterday a span of gray
horses after having been unhooked from a
carriage in Mr. Calder's yards get away
from their driver, and getting down ever
the river bank, plunged into the river
a little below the railroad bridge. One of
the animals directly left the water, return
ing te the shore, and was captured. Its
mate swam out into deep water through
the slush and landed en a small island
down the river, at a point just north of
Spooky Island, where it was hauled in,
nearly frozen, by three men in a beat.
The Moravian Supper.
Our leaders should net forget that the
grand supper gotten up under the man
agement of the ladies of the Moravian
chinch commences in the lecture room in
rear of the church this evening, and will
be continued te-morrow and Saturday
evenings. The Moravian ladies are. noted
for their skill in baking, cooking and
spreading table, and providing the most
tempting viands at the lowest possible
prices. The proceeds of the supper will
be devoted te the benefit of the church.

Shaking Up.
New Yehk, Feb. e. Letters from Cuba
say the recent earthquake was most severe
at Vuclta Abajo. Shocks occurred daily
from the 22tl te the 27th ultimo. In Sail
Cristobal all the public and most of the

company of engineers has been
sent there te clear away the debris. Ne
lives were lest, but seventeen persons were
injured. The shocks were accompanied by
a rumbling sound like thunder under
ground. At Vuclta Abajo sulphureus
eruptions took place, clocks stepped in
stantly. In some localities great chasms
appeared in the earth, through which were
projected spouts of water, sand fossils and
fragments of roots of trees.

Mr. Blaine was tee restless and uneasy

but wandered around, picking up what
news he could get from the Republi
can convention at Harrisburg. Before
the day was ended he get mere news than
he wanted. Mr. Blaine and his friends
have been very confident in the expression
that he is the choice of a majority of the
Republican voters of Pennsylvania, an!

or ether, he would at least divide results
with the Grant interest in the convention.

The Royal Precession from Rockingham

the Heuse of Lords at 12:10. In her speech
she alludes te the suffering in Ireland,
saying that arrangements for administering

owners of settled land, and for simplifying
the practice of cenveyancing.
The queen's reception by the populace
was enthusiastic. The traditional search

Crime and Disaster.
A boiler in the weed yard of R. D.
Leighten. at Buffalo. N. Y.. exploded yes
terday, severely injuring James Travers,
William Place, Emery Riehl and Chris
tian Umbach.
F. J. Gallagher, a workman in Warner's
tobacco factory, at Wilmington, Del., fell
into a vat of boiling logwood en Tuesday,
and was almost dead when rescued.
Curlcy Moere, a three-card nionte
dealer, was murdered Dick Moere, n. sn.
loon keeper, and two variety performers,
Cellins and Banjo Charley, en Monday
mght, in a dance hall at Santa Fee,
The wife of ex-coroner Wildey, of New
Yerk, has been sentenced te the penitenti
ary for two years and six mouths for nick
ing a lady's pocket at an exhibition in
Masonic Temple in 3Iarch last. The lady
had been prominent in society, and an
unlucky taste for liquor was the" cause of
her wrong-doing.
William Davis had his head crushed
with a poker in the hand of Jehn Hazle Hazle
weed, at Parkesburg, W. Va., en Tuesday
evening and will probably die. Hazle Hazle
weed surrendred himself, but was dis
charged, as he had clearly acted in self-defense.
A brutal family affray occurred about
three miles from Lawrence, Kansas, early
yesterday morning. Jehn Bramlield and
his wife were assaulted with a bludgeon
by the wife's stepfather, Samuel J.
Helmes, because the latter's wife had
conveyed her property te her daughter.
The Bram fields were badly beaten and the
man may die. Helmes was arrested.

Cutting Ice
The ice harvesters are at work te-day
cutting ice from the ponds in the suburbs
of the city. The first lead that came under
our notice was cut from llcrsbcy's pond
out Hazel street. It was about six inches

The Conestoga is frezeu ever, but the
ice is net yet of sufficient thickness te
make cutting safe or profitable.
Pair of Roots Missing.
This morning a pair beets belonging te
Michael Ferney, of Strasburg, were stolen
fiein the Pennsylvania depot, this city.
Ferney was going te Harrisburg and his
trunk and beets were taken te the depot by
the Strasburg stage driver. They were
placed en a truck in the depot and in a
short time the beets had walked elT.
A Gang Committed.
The ten drunken and disorderly persons
arrested a fjw day age at the Penn iron
works, had a hearing before Alderman
McConemy this afternoon and were com
mitted te jail for terms ranging from
twenty te sixty days.

risburg. Blaine was at a dinner party at
Senater Allisen's, and attended the wed
ding of D. C. Ferney's daughter after
wards. Returning home about mid
night, he received several dispatches giv
ing the result of the day's session, but de
clined saying anything about the matter
further than te suggest the moral e.'l'cct
of twenty or thirty majority would net
be a very strong cxamplu te ether states,
especially when Cameren contrails the
state as he does. The friends of Blaine
arc greatly elated at the result, saying
that his strength in the stite must be
greater than that of Cameren or
Grant, else one hundred and thirteen men.
in the face of Cameren's anger and ven
geance, would net have dared te stand up
as they did. It is known here that Den
Cameren was mere interested in the Har
risburg convention than in any ether
political event of his life, "When the
Leeds-McManes delegation was here Mc
Manes was net in favor of instructing for

and walked up and down the lloer in a
great state of mind, declaring that if he
