LANCASTER DAlW iOTELLIGENCEtL WEDNESDAY. FEBRUARY 4, 1880.
?v3-
Lancaster tntelltgencct,
WEDNESDAY EVENING, FEB. 4, 1880.
Testing a Milch Cew.
I submit the following points or specifi"
catiens by which the value of a cow can be
ascertained for production of butter :
The word "best," as jt is generally used
in premium lists, has se many meanings
that the committee arc at a less te knew
just what its fullest signification may be.
Seme would consider one point of great ex
cellence, while ethers of the same commit
tee would think it of litlc value. Se far as
I can learn, there is no list of points agreed
upon by any agricultural society which
offers premiums for that class of stock, and
there is a chance for a wide variation of
opinions.
Fer many years I have hoped that this
subject would meet with that attention
that it deserves. If a dairyman has a cow
that is unusual in her yield of butter, her
yield and treatment could be readily com
pared by an accepted standard of points.
If he discovered in his cow certain excel
lencies net in the standard, he am make
them known. Hoping that ethers of your
readers will favor us with their views, I
will offer a few of the requisites te be con
sidered in making up a scale of points.
1. Breed and age of cow. If thorough
bred, what breed. If grade, hew graded.
2. Time of trial after calving.
'.). Number of days of trial test ; net less
than live days at any one trial, and net
less than three trials in a year.
4. Quantity of milk in paunds (net
quarts) te one pound of butter.
5. Pounds and ounces of butler when
worked, salted and ready for market.
0. Hew the milk and cream were treated
before and at the time of churning.
7. Gress weight of cow at time of giving
the milk.
8. Kind and quantity of feed. If pasture,
what kind of grasses, and time of year.
!). Kind and quantity of grain and roots
fed, if any.
All te be divided se as te make a scale,
100 te be perfection.
There may be ether points that might
be considered. But it .seems te me that I
have enough for the present. Could these
points (or better ones) be adopted, these
who take cows te fairs where premiums arc
offered, would knew what was expected of
them. Every part of the contest would be
open te all concerned and when committees
had agreed upon their verdict, it would
clearly explain their views te the competi
tors. In this way, as it .seems te me. fan
justice would be the result. The cow with
the best record should draw the prize ; net
her owner. Each of the nine points call be
readily comprehended, I trust. Brether
dairymen, everywhere, please give us your
views. Criticise my scale of points. C. G.
