Before Judge Uvlsgrten.
The jury in the case of 3Iary T. E.
Hiester Levis, transferres of Anna L.
Sbenk, vs. Emeline Heffman and Samuel
Heffman, rendered a verdict in favor of the
plaintiff for $1,265.46.
In the case of the cem'th of Pennsylva
nia, for the use of Lancaster county, vs.
Wm. F. Pickel and Wm. P. Pickel, guar
dian of Benjamin F. Pickel, garnishee, a
verdict was taken in favor of the plaintiff
for $852.25.
J. and J. Bachman vs. Jacob Myers.
Verdict taken in favor of the plaintiffs for
50.
Jehn Staley vs. Geerge Wall, William
Wesner and Geerge Wesner. This is an
action of ejectment te ascertain the owner
ship of a triangular-shaped piece of ground
situated en Seuth Mulberry and West
Strawberry streets, having 85 feet en the
former and 118 feet en the latter street.
The plaintiff traced the ownership of the
land by deeds from 1734 te 1866, when
they allege that it was purchased by Mrs.
Ann Staley, mother of the plaintiff, and
wife of Cyrus Staley, from Geerge Miller.
Afterwards Mrs. Staley transferred the
property te the plaintiff. The deed from
Miller te Mrs. Staley cannot be found, it
having been lest, without being recorded,
a'theugh diligent search has been made
for it.
The defense is that the defendants lent
Cyrus Staley, who said that he was owner
of this land, considerable money. The
land was sold at sheriff sale. They pur
chased it and new hald a tlccd from the
sheriff. On trial.
Before Judge Patterson.
Jehn K. Barr and Hattie A. Barr for
the me or Hattie A. Barr vs. the Farmers'
Mutual insurance company. The plaintiff
side of the case is that en May 31 in the
year 1867, Mr. Barr insured his house in
"West Ilempficld township, in the defen
dant cjmpany and paid the premiums.
When the policy was about te expire the
agent informed him of the fact and he said
that he desired te insure his ether
buildingsalse for three years mere and told
the agent te make the survey. This was done
and in the latter part of April, or early in
May 1870, as is alleged, Barr offered te
Kign an application in blank, as he might
net be home en May 31st. This was done
and the money was paid and Bair received
a lei-cipt dated May 31st. On May 19,
1873, the barn, coin-crib, tobacco shed,
fcc, of the piepcity, were destroyed by
iire when Barr was away from home.
When he asked the defendants for his
money they claimed that his insurance pol
icy had expired en May 3d, 1873. The
amount of the insurance en the burned
buildings w:is originally about 4,000. Bair
& Shcnk, bankers, held a judgment against
the plaintiff, and they attached about
33,000 of this money, which they recovered
by a law suit, the remainder, something
ever $1,000, is sought te be recovered by
plaintiff. The defense is that the insur
ance expired en May 3d, before the fire
occurred, and that the receipt when given
was of that date. On trial.

Lecture by Wallace. Uruce Last Kvcning.
Mr. "Wallace Bruce, of Peughkecpsie,
X. Y., lectured last evening at Fulton hall
upon " Womanhood in Shakspearc." The
" orator of literature " was introduced by
Marriett Uresius, esq, lie said that the
title of the lecture combined the two best
known words in the EuglUli language. Te
place upon the stage all the charactcis of
Shakspeaic's dramas would require seven
hundred perfeiincis. and net ene
of these creatures resembles in the
slightest degiee any ether. Se true
are they drawn te nature that net
one among them all will ever be out of
date. Among these diameters we find
four heieines te every here about the
ratio In which they aic found in leal life.
The difficulty is that among se many it is
no slight matter te make selections for
illustration. Glancing at Shakspeare's
creations as a whole we are struck l3' the
strength of his heroines and the remark
able weakness of his heroes. With the
exception of Antonie, in the "Merchant of
Venice," and Brutus, he has given us no
.strong or perfect man.
The lecturer described a picture he had
seen in which were grouped all the
diameters of Aven's bard. The heroines
appeared like sunshine piercing the sad
ness and gloom which surrounded his
lierees. He divided the female characters
of the poet into three classes, the roman
tic, the domestic and the heroic.
Miranda, Rosalind, Ophelia and Julist
were chosen as illustrations of the romantic
in womanhood. Most poets and nearly all
novelists end their story here leaving off
with the sound of the marriage bells. But
we de net find it se in Shakspeare, nor in
actual life. The master-genius subordi
nates the ideal te the real. Queen Cather
ine, Imogene, Cerdelia and Isabella were
chosen te represent the domestic and hero
ic in womanhood. Of all the poet's female
creations the lecturer esteemed Portia the
most perfect, combining in herself the
three qualities of his analysis romance,
the domestic virtue, and heroism. She al
most reached the ideal of a perfect woman.
Our conclusion from the s-tudy of Shak
Kpeare's female characters is that in his
dramas woman is ever represented, wherever
we find her, as the soul of society. Her
strenirth lies in her moral influence, and

her mission is te reform and elevate man
kind. Mr. Bruce illustrated his lecture by
many apt quotations from the great
dramatist, and proved himself throughout
te be a familiar student of his critics as
well as his works. His delivery was easy
and graceful and his description marked
by great beauty of language. He was in
teriupted several times by hearty ap
plause, and the audience departed well
pleased with the entertainment.
Committed for Court.
William Jenes, one of the men engaged
in the riot at the Rohrcrstewn rolling mill,
wsis arrested this morning and taken be
fore Alderman Spurrier. He was held te
bail for a further hearing en Saturday next
at 2 e o'clock te answer for riot, and for a
felonious assault and battery en Patrick
O'Donnell, who is new lying at the county
hospital suffering from a blew he received
en the head during the riot.
Axsault and Battery.
Jacob Weeds, colored, en complaint of
Lydia Pinkerton, also colored, was held te
"bail by Alderman Spurrier te answer at
court for assault and battery.
Resumed Werk.
The trouble at the Rohrcrstewn iron
-works has ended, quiet has been restored,
and the striking employees have gene te
work.
A Well-Known Place.

It is publicly announced that Mrs. Har
riet Lane Johnsten has purchased "Steny
Batter," the farm en which her uncle,
James Buchanan, fifteenth president of the
United States, was born, and will erect
upon it some monument te his memory.
What the character of her memorial
will be, -whether shaft of stone or build
ing of some ether kind, has net yet
been stated; but the place is known te
nearly all these who have ever spent
much time at Mercersburg. A glorious
place it is tee that "Gap " en the read te
McConnellsburg. Who does net remember
the outlines of the mountain just there,
with the gray turnpike winding ever it, and
the cone-shaped cedars and the laurels, and
the ferns and clear babbling brooks, and
the beauteous lights and shadows tliat
came creeping up, like familiar things, se
palpable that one could almost fondle them.
We would net be astonished te find it a
place of resort in the future,especially new
as it is accessible by railroad. What a grand
place it would be for our weary ministers
se spend a few summer days ! Hew would
Dr. Trail Green, or Prof. Perter, like te
call the roll of an old Betany class en the
little stone bridge that spans the read ?
Alas ! many, whose gay talk and laughter
made the weeded ravines vocal, could net
answer. They are gene te their long homes,
and the thoughts of these who remain
wauld be subdued ; but we doubt whether
the "old boys " would be mere inclined te
came down te the analysis of flowers than
they were a quarter of a century age.
Washington Borough Items.
Mr. Musser, of Mountville, purchased
one crop of tobacco here, for which he
p.iid 10 cents fei wrappers and 4 cents for
fillers.
Protracted meetings have commenced
at the Bethel and M. E. churches. Beth
have geed audiences every evening and a
few have presented themselves at the altar
for prayer.
The liver is still falling and sporting and
gunning men are in hopes of a geed duck

CRIME AND DISASTER.
A Man Beheaded en the Railroad.
Providence, R. I., Jan. 28. A man
named Haggerty was beheaded en the
Worcester railroad last nisht probably by
a freight train. He had been in the
Woonsocket police station for drunkenness,
but had been discharged when thought te
be sober enough te get home. He reached
Blackstone and probably became again
intoxicated.
Accidentally Shet and Killed.
Syracuse, N. Y., Jan. 28. At neon
te-day Elias Gebhardt, 1C years of age, a
clerk in a hardwarde store, was accident
ally shot and instantly killed by a customer
te whom he was selling a pistol. In the
excitement the customer, who gave his
name as Costelle, from Wayne county,
disappeared. The revolver, which was
thought te be unleaded, contained three
charges.
Burned te Death.
Halifax, N. S., Jan. 28. Mrs. Jeseph
Ephelcn, a widow aged 78 years, was
burned te death yesterday while alone in
her house at Little Raven, Yarmouth
county. It is supposed that her clothing
became ignited while she was attempting
te light a fire.
Found Deatl.
Halifax, N. S., January 28. County
Counseller Donevan, of Ingonish, Victeria
county, C. B., who has been missing for
ten days, was found dead in the weeds
near Braddock. It is supposed he com
mitted suicide while insane.
Murdered in the Streets.
Elizabeth N. J., Jan. 28. Jeseph
Wolf, aged nineteen, was shot down and
robbed last night in going along the street
at Evena. The murderer escaped, but
several suspected persons have been ar

Morristown, N. J., Jan. 28. The
posteflice at this place was broken into
and robbed last night, but te what extent
has net yet been ascertained.
Suicide of a Police Otllcer.
Norfolk, Va., Jan. 28. Chief of Po
lice Bensen committed suicide this morn
ing by sheeting himself.

Wheeling, W. Va., Jan. 28. There is
no truth in specials reports sent lieme
about fire and firebugs.

Affairs Down in Maine's Capital.
Augusta, Maine, 28. The Fusion
Legislature met this morning in Union
hall. Ne business was transacted in the
Heuse. That body took a recess until
four o'clock. All persons, including the
reporters, arc excluded.
In the Senate Mr. Gibbs moved tint all
newspapers reporters be excluded. The
general expression of opinion en the part
of the Fusion members is te go into the
body at the state house. Probably they
will meet for the last time te-morrow, as
that will be the day set for them te be all
together when they will dissolve sine die.
Submission te the Court.
Portland, Me., Jan. 28. The XewEra,
the leading Greenback organ, submits te
the decision of the supreme court and ap
peals te the people. It also calls upon the
Press te publish the declaration of princi
ples of the " Brick Pomeroy League, "
thus admitting their connection with
them.
At the State Heuse.
Augusta, Me., Jan. 28. In the Senate
the committee en judiciary was instructed
te inquire as te amending the constitution
by abolishing the council, providing for
election of an auditor and consti
tuting the heads of departments the advis
ers of the governor.
In the Heuse Messrs. Hill, of Corinth,
and Milliken, of Burnham, Fusionists, ap
peared and took their seats.

THE STRANDED LOUISIANA.
Successful Efferts te Save the Ship.
New Orleans, Jan. 28. A despatch
from Captain Gewcr, of the stranded
steamship Louisiana, says he has thrown
overboard 230 tens of cargo te lighten the
ship. Lighters can be used only in calm
weather. The propeller is broken. Pas
sengers have been sent te Pert Eads. The
ship will be saved.

Reading, Pa., Jan. 28. The Grand
Army of the Republic met at the opera
house here te-day. Three hundred and

Bosten, Jan. 28. William II. Brewster,
one of the proprietors of the Bosten Trav
eller, died at Newburyport, Mass., last
night. He had been in ill health for some
time.

end te the Times states that the manager
of Theatre Francaise has refused permis

state committee has called the Republican
convention te meet at Trenten, May 6, te
elect delegates te the Chicago convention.
Graduates or the Naval Academy.
The report of the secretary of the navy,
in answer te a resolution of the Heuse of
Representatives, in regard te the probable
number of midshipmen who will enter the '
navy from the naval academv at Annaneli
shows that there are forty-four midship
men who have passed their final examma-v
tien for ensign and thirty-five ethers
who will come up for final exam.'

New Hampshire va. Louisiana.
An original bill was filed yesterday in
the supreme court of the United States in
which the state of New Hampshire is com
plainant and the state of Louisiana de
fendant. The object of the bill is te com
pel the payment by the state of Louisiana
of its rightful obligations which it has re
pudiated. The bill sets forth the history
of the indebtedness of Louisiana en which
it has defaulted, and recites the acts assum
ing te provide for the payment of the same.
It petitions the supreme court for an in
junction against the state officers of Louis
iana, requiring them te appear in the
court and answer the premises and "abide
by the said order, direction and decree as
may be made against them in the premises,
and as shall seem meet and agreeable te
equity and geed conscience." Tite case
will be argued by the attorney general of
New Hampshire and by eminent associate
counsel. It is in accordance with the idea
that was suggested some time since as
being the best method for a hope that the
state of Louisiana could be compelled te
fulfill its obligations. The state of New
Hampshire, of course, stands forward n-i
the representative of citizens who are the
holders of Louisiana bends.
