LACASTERDAILII INTEttlGEpER,: TUESDAY: JANUARY 27; 1880.
" question" .or denouncing the gag, as their
several interests prompted.
Tae chair decided all discussion out of
order, and called upon "the sergeant-at-arms"
te preserve order or the hall would
be cleared. This had the effect, net of re
storing order, but slightly abating the hub
bub, and the question was taken upon
tabling McMclleu's resolution. The re
sult was, yeas, 41, nays, 29.
J. Hay Brown jumped te his feet and
said : "Mr. Chairman, I move that Satur
day, May 21, be fixed as the time for hold
ing " a long pause, as though he
were considering some doubtful point, and
then added, "I move we de new ad
journ." This odd speech met with laughter,
cheers and jeers.
J. "W. Jehnsen, esq., rose in wrath and
attempted te make a speech, threatening
that if the gag was te be applied in this
committee an appeal would be taken te the
people, who make and unmake commit
tees. He was loudly called te order by the
chair, but refused te sit down and finally
Hay Brown said that as it was plain John John Jehn
eon" would "bust" if lie did net have an op
portunity or ventilating himself, he would
withdraw the motion te adjourn.
Mr. Jehnsen, somewhat mollified,
said that notwithstanding some differences
of opinion the members of the committee
all professed te be geed Republicans and
he hoped they were. He wished te offer a
scries of resolutions, which he thought
would meet the approbation of all. They
were as fellows :
Jlcselcctl, That at the Kepubliean pri
mary election te be held in -May, 1380, the
chairman of this committee is hereby in
structed te place the names of the differ
ent candidates for president of the United
states en the tickets te be prepared by him
in order that each Republican voter may
have an opportunity te vote for his choice
for president ; and the vote se cast shall
be considered te be instructions te our
delegates te the national convention te be
held at Chicago in June, 1880.
Iltxelccd, That the delegates this day
elected te the state convention te meet at
Ilarrisbiugen the 4th day of February.
1880, arc hereby requested te notify said
convention that the Republicans of Lan
caster county claim the right te, and will,
elect their own delegates under the ruies
of their party te represent them in the ap
proaching national convention.
Mr. Jehnsen made a long speech in
favor of his resolutions; Hay Brown
opposed them as a heretofore unheard-of
preposition and moved te lay them en the
table. Anether scene of great confusion
ensued, and notwithstanding the decis
ion of the chair that a vote te lay en the
table cut oil all debate, the debate went
en and was participated in by a dozen
disputants.
Finally it was agreed te take the ques
tion upon Mr. Jehnsen's first, resolution.
This was done, and the roll being called
resulted in :(j yeas and :S2 nays.
This partial triumph of the Blaine men
threw Grant-Cameren men into some con
fusion, but Hay Brown at once moved
that the committee adjourn te meet at
the call of the chairman, and, alter a
world of confusion, the motion prevailed
by a vote of -11 te Se, this cutting off all
chance of getting a vote en Jehnsen's
second resolution and upon another resolu
tion which would have been offered, pledg
ing the delegates te the state convention
te vote for Cel. .1. A. M. I'assmere for
Audit r General.

Politicians i the Anxious Seat.
There weie plenty of Republican poli
ticians in town last night, and most of
tliem spent the evening at the opera house,
where Madame Rente's niinstiels were
perfei ming. Seme of the leading lights of
both factions were present, but they all
were anxious leeks and were net able te
long remain sitting. J. Hay Brown, esq.,
who has never been known te sit in one
place for an hour, kept running out at in
tervals, as tlid Captain McMcllen. chief
of the Heg Ringers. Owen Bricker
seemed very anxious and started
away befeie the close, but seen
returned and called out Capt. McMcllen,
who had a long and earnest talk at the
deer with the blacksmith editor of the Tn-
tittrer. A nuiuncr el tiie "heys who get
the money and de the outside work were
there also, but they seemed te take mere
interest in the show than their leaders.
There was a geed sprinkling of country pol
iticians among the crowd, and the parquet
circle reminded one of a Republican con
vention, though it was net nearly se bois
terous. During yesterday afternoon, also, there
was no little degiee of excitement and
anxiety prevailing in the Republican camp.
The Bull Ring chieftains get word of the
movement of their opponents te steal a
march en them, and measures were imme
diately put en feet te countermine the
scheme of the crafty Heg Ringers. Trust
ed henchmen of the Cameren clan,
including many of " the best workers in
the wards," were dispatched in all direc
tions with instructions te summon the
faithful and inform them of the urgency
of the situation. The genuine alarm of
Kshleman, Brown. and ethers of the faction
represented by these gentlemen, was ren
dered all the mere manifest, by the
calm satisfaction of the Heg Ring
leaders, who exhibited symptoms that
betrayed their confidence of a favorable
outcome of te-day's battle. Had it net
been for the timely discovery by the ad
herents of the house of Lomielef the plan
te overthrew them in their own strong
hold there is geed reason te believe that
the Old Guard would new be included in
the list of counties that may be safely
counted for
month.

The American Engine l'inishetl.
Fer the past six weeks the engine of the
American fire company, Xe. ., has been
undergoing repairs at the carriage shop of
Fdgerly & Ce., en Market street, and it
was finished yesterday. It has teceived a
thorough eveihauling. four new wheels
and a tongue being the principal improve
ments. The engine has been painted in a
very artistic manner by Jehn "Whitehead,
who docs the work of that kind for the
firm. The wheels, tongue and coal box
are painted in English vermilion, with
gilt stripe, edge with dark blue,
between which runs a very small
white stripe. On the rear end of the fire
box is the word "American," painted in
gilt letters with blue edging, en the sides
are the figures " 1S33," and at each corner
is a big " a " of the same color. The
large head-light has been replated, as have
the two smaller ones en the rear of the
engine. On the front two patent silver
plated reflectors have been placed, which
are se arranged that they can be moved
te threw the light te the front, rear or
sides of the engine. The large geld eagle
en the front has been regilded, and the
heavy bands en the wheel hubs are geld
mounted. Other improvements have been
made about the engine and it certainly
presents a beautiful appearance. It was
te have been removed from the shop to
day, but en account of the rainy weather
it will remain where it is ter tnc present,

A SOCIAL EPISODK.
Jtlrs. Sjirague's Dlnuer te Mrs. Conkling.
One of the Washington papers gives the
following description of Mrs. Sprague's
recent dinner te Mrs. Conkling :
' One of the handsomest entertainments
imaginable, being perfeet in its minutest
details, was the little dinner given by Mrs.
Kate Chase Spraguc,en Wednesday evening
last, te her friend, Mrs. Rescoe Conkling,
who is visiting here. The cesy home en Con
necticut avenue, which Mrs. Sprague has
occupied since leaving Edgewood, is ar
ranged with such artistic skill and en this
occasion was se beautified by flowers that
upon entering the brilliantly lighted saloon
from the gloomy streets outside it looked
like fairy land, and the illusion Mas net
dispelled as its presiding spirit, radiant in
white canter's hair and diamonds, ad
vanced te welcome the favored guest.
The table with its flowers and favors
was a work of art, everything being de
signed, from decorations te dessert, by the
hostess. On the centre lay an oval mir
ror in its tank of flowers, looking like a
miniature lake upon whose besom appear
ed te float a huge swan with a back lead
of fragrant blossoms. At each plate,
besides the customary bouquets, were
exquisite trifles, such as, for in
stance, a crimson stiu slipper with
gilded French heel and cheniellu bordered
top, a bow of handsome satin ribbon en the
tee and long loops and bow of the same te
carry it en the arm as a satchel, and the
shoe filled with gorgeous Marshel Niel rose
buds. Anether was a chocolate cake
wrapped in its silver paper, upon
which pranced a silver goat drawing
a miniature" basket of fruits. Trail
ing vines suspended from the
chandeliers, and pyramids of fruits and
flowers completed the adornments. Mrs.
Conkling looked very lovely in black velvet
with trimmings of white lace and orna
ments of pearls. Mrs. Hamilton Smith
were a black velvet costume with black
lace garniture ; ornaments, amethysts and
violets. Mrs. Conkling's trophy was a
shepherd's hat of srtin filled with roses,
which were held in place by a silver dart.
Mrs. Smith's a long Turkish pipe of crim
son satin, the immense bowl being filled
with buds. There were but eight in the
party, including the beautiful hostess."
ANOTHER MOLLIK 31AGU1RI; CAUGHT.
He Is Cellared in Canada The Crime of
Which lie is Accused .
An associated press dispatch, announc
ing the arrest, at St. Catherine's, Canada,
of Jehn McGuirc, alias William Leve, re
calls the darkest period of the Mellic Ma
guire troubles, and one of the most cold celd cold
beooded murders of that cruel time. There
is geed reason for believing that the per
son arrested is William Leve, a notorious
desperado and Mellic Maguire, who shot
Themas Gwither, a justice of the peace, en
his own deer step, in Girardville, en the
night of August 14, 1875.
That was a wild night in the Mahaney
region. The day had been pay day at a
number of the collieries, and every town
was full of drunken, swearing, brawling
men. The Mellic Maguires were in their
glory, and men were murdered en slight
provocations or none at all. That night,
at a moonlight picnic in a grove near
Shenandoah, Tem Hurley, a Mellic leader,
walked t te a stand where Gemer
James, a young Welshman, was serv
ing beer, shot him- dead and es
caped. Hurley has never been arrested.
That evening Squire Gwither had issued a
warrant for the arrest of Leve, who was
violent and disorderly. Leve came te
Gwithcr's office and began abusing the
justice for issuing the warrant. He was
put out, and went home boiling with rage.
About ten o'clock Gwither locked tip his
office and started te go home, when he was
met at the deer by Leve, who had a leaded
shotgun in his hand and was uttering
violent threats ; his old mother followed,
trying te restrain him. Leve rushed up
te Gwither and fired the gun full
in his face, killing him instant
ly. Then he fled, and though the
murder of se prominent a man as Gwither
created an unusual sensation, and unus
ual efforts were made te capture the assas
sin, he was never caught. His arrest new,
if it is indeed "Bill" Leve, of Girardville,
is undoubtedly owing te the persistent ef
forts of the detectives who have never
given up the chase of the fugitive Mollies.
They fellow clew after clew, and though
many of them prove abortive, every new
and then one leads up te a murderer. Hur
ley was last heard of in Texas ; but when
an officer went there after him the bird had
flown. There is a small reward offered for
the arrest of cither Hurley or Leve.
