JANUARY 23, 1880. : J - - ;' lmcastet Intelligencer. -TEIDAT EVKNING, JANUABY 23, 1880. CLOTHING. Tlic Wages erFarm Laber. - Gcrmantewn Telcgrapli. Thisisthctimeef the year when labor en the farm is the question of the hour. It has been said that among the drawbacks te Intelligent agriculture in our country is the uncertain tenure of the soil. The farmer who rents docs nothing permanently be cause he may leave the next year and the farmer who owns knows net at what me ment he may sell. There arc many who ' make a permanent business of the farm, "but there arc thousands who de net ; and - these keep down the average of geed cul ture. But it seems te us if evanescent settling is an injury te farming, the frequent cliange of labor is at least as bad. The agricultural laborer, as a general thing, is employed for about nine months in the year. In the spring he is te be looked after, and before he is secured numberless little matters, which result in great mo ment after awhile, are left undone till the ' help comes, when it is tee late te de them properly for the best results for that season. Where farms arc large enough te afford - it, and these who farm arc engaged in a life pursuit, the best results have been found te fellow from se managing as te have the help employed all the year round; and all the better if such help be married, and can lie comfortably domiciled in ten ant houses en the ground. Advantage can thus be taken of every turn of geed weather te get the work done at the proper moment, te the great benefit of the subsequent crop. Moreover a man regularly employed is likely te take mere interest in his work than one who knows he is but temporary, and the employer has mere chance te bear patiently with the man while both are learning one another's ways. There is besides the absolute question of labor at this season, another which always troubles one, namely, that one of wages. The carpenter for instance who gets in the city $2.50 te $0 per day, has te pay perhaps $1G or $18 per month for house-rent, while previsions of every kind have te be pur chased, and often at high rates. Even the smallest scrap of fuel has te be bought, and there is nothing but w hat costs hard cash te get it. A hand en a farm, espe cially if he is comfeitably tenanted, has less rent, less expense in previsions, and less demand en his wages in every way, and this should always enter into calcula tions as te the worth of services. Even when the single man is bearded in the family, it is still about the same. Sixteen dollars per month and beard in a family en a farm is better for the hand than $1.50 without any ether privileges, in a city, as any single young man who has tried the difference can readily testify te. It is net therefore a fair comparison be tween the actual cash of the city and the cash wages of the country. Nominally less, the result is generally greater, and this result should be the basis of calcula tions. There is no doubt, however, that we lese much by transitory labor, and it will be wise for all who can te make such i.raugcmcnts as will enable the laborer te c steadily employed the whole year, b nerve. It is a Kiv.it thing te have what is called Merer, and nothing contribute-, mere te the power of physical contiel thus named than WnrneiVi Mite Nervim-.
