Fresh Gleanings from the Frnitfal Harvest of
American Humer.
Harper's Drawer
The reception given te Bishop Petter at
.the Academy of Slusic en the 2eth of No
vember, in commemoration of the twenty
fifth year of his episcopate, called together
an audience tliat mica all the seats and
standing-room of the stage and auditorium.
Crowds turned away who desired te get in
but " could net for the press." Apropos
of this, a reverend gentleman near one of
the doers, who was struggling for entrance
said, "The only propriety I can see in the
selection of a theatre for such a reception
consists in the fact that in the early ages
of the church the bishops were always
martyred there."
Democrats arc the exception instead of
the rule in Vermont, and it is unusual te
see mere than two or three gathered to
gether. Widow has buried three
husbands, all prominent Democrats. At
the funeral of the last, many of the " un
tcrrificd " were in attendance, and as they
were leaving the house a gentleman re
marked, in an under-tenc, " This leeks
like a Democratic state convention." The
widow is seen te marry a fourth husband
who is also a noted Democrat, and as the
matter was being discussed recently Jim
, who is one of the " true blues," said:
" Beys, this thing is getting serious : at
this rate the widow will in a few years ruin
tlu Democratic parly of Rutland county."
Editor's Dbawbk, in Harper1 Maya
zinc for February.
The humor of the war continues te crop
out here and there, and is relished equally
by the gray-ce.its and by these who were
the blue. Fer instance, here is geed old
Daniel S. Helten, a Baptist preacher of
lteane county, Tennessee, eighty-eight
years old. He had sixteen sons in the
Union army and two in the Confederate,
and thereupon becomes satistical by say
ing, " 3Iy sympathies were with the Union
by fourteen majority." The computation
seems te be charged with accuracy.
Anether revemed gcntlcnan of this city,
known alike for his wit and eloquence,
alluding casually te the fact that a brother
of Bishop Petter hail been bishop of Penn
sylvania, and that the bright and genial
rector of Grace church, Dr. Henry C. Pot Pet
ter, had just narrowly escaped election
te the sec of New Jersey, remarked," It
would seem that the American cjnscepatc in
really the Petters' Field."

power of physical control thus named than
