It is impossible as yet te tell wlioameng the
general nominations for Republican dele
gates will secure rn election. Inthefii-st
ward Mr. Bering and Mr. Myers have each
a set of candidates in the field. Bering's
men are the mere active, but Mr. Myers
has the advantage of being a resident of the
ward. In the Second, Third and Fourth
wards there will be a pretty close contest,
with chances in Mr. Myers's favor. In the
Fifth ward there are only four nominees,
and only one of these is regarded as a
Myers man. In the Sixth ward the
contest will Imj between Bering
and Rescnmiller, both of whom have
delegates in the field and both of whom
claim the ward. The Seventh ward ap
pears te be a geed deal split up and there
is talk of compromising and giving each of
the candidates for mayor one delegate.
The Eighth and Ninth wards are unani
mous for Bering, in whose interest " the
best workers in the ward " have everything
nicely set up. On the whole Bering ap
pears te have the inside track, but unless
lie secures enough votes te nominate him
en the first ballet it is probable that he
may be defeated, as the field is against
him and a dark horse maybe unblanketed.
In the Third ward Majer R. W. Shenk
was given the honor of an uncontested re re re
nomiuatien for select council. lie was
afterwards tendered a serenade by the In
dependent band, and " set 'em up all
around" at Fulmer's.
There was no quarreling and net much
disorder at any of the polling places.

Important te Tobacco Ra teen.
Section 3,301, revised statutes, makes
it the duty of every farmer and planter
producing or selling leaf tobacco, en de
mand of any revenue officer or authorized
agent of the treasury department, te
furnish said officer or agent with a true and
complete statement, verified by oath, of
all his sales of leaf tobacco, the number
of hogsheads, cases, or pounds, with the
name and residence, in each instance, of
the person te whom sold and the place te
which it is shipped. If such farmer or
planter wilfully refuses te furnish this
information, or knowingly make false
.statements as te any of the facts
aforesaid, he renders himself liable te a
penalty net exceeding five hundred dol
lars. A farmer or planter is net required
te pack or prize his tobacco before offering
it for sale in hogsheads, but he may sell it
loose, as he has heretofore been in the
habit of selling. If, however, the farmer
or planter shall sell directly te consumers,
or if he sells, consigns, assigns, transfers
or disposes of his tobacco te persons ether
than these who have paid special taxes,
cither as leaf dealers or manufacturers of
tobacco, snuff or cigars, or te persons pur
chasing leaf tobacco for expert, he becomes
liable as a retail dealer in leaf tobacco, te
the special tax of $300, and te the addi
tional tax of fifty cents en every dollar in
excess of $1,000 of his sales.

H BUYUG UILAMDELED SHIRTS,
Staling Liquor uy the Itettle.
Judge .Tunkiii, of Perry county, at a re
cent term of the ceuuty court at New
Itloeinficld, cautioned innkeepers about the
peril of selling liquor by the bottle ever
their bars. He admonished landlords that
they had no right te sell a bettlcful of li
quor te a sober man who would t rausfcr it
te one in the habit of becoming intoxicated
or te miners, and he was bound, as much
as a druggist who dispensed poison at the
call of a customer, te knew who was te use
the liquor. The purchase of a quart of
whisky te a sober man was in itself a sus
picious circumstance and raised the l'a'r
infcicncc that it was being bought for some
one te whom the landlord would net sell
it. And, he added, proof of its transfer te
and use by drunkards and miners was suf
ficient cause for revoking the innkeeper's
license.

The Defense in the Bribery Cases Asking
for Postponement.
Harkisbukg, Pa., Jan 21. In the case
of Salter charged with attempted bribery
of members of the Legislature the de
fense asked for a postponement of the
trial mainly en the ground of the absence
of several important witnesses and the
brief time allowed for the examination of
the indictment. After a protracted discus

postpone the trial till te-morrow morning,
when-, if the witnesses are net forthcem

Mr. Gewen then drew up an order which
all the counsel agreed te and the court
adopted it. It provides that all the cases
shall go ever te an adjourned court, begin
ning the second Monday in March and con
tinuing two weeks, and that there be no
further continuance for any cause. The
effect of the pleas of counsel for defense to
day is te preclude interposition of dilatory
tactics.

Londen, Jan. 21. A Paris dispatch te
the Times says: "Eight ladies of the
order of the Little Sisters of the Peer

at Brooklyn, New Yerk."
this way, the atlair at the state house was
et great benefit te the Fusionists, and the
tone of their speeches this forenoon shows
that the leaders recognize the fact, and
arc new mere hopeful than for days.
The Fusionist Senate and Heuse were
called te order at ten o'clock, in Union
hall, en Water street. In the Heuse Mr.
UicKey, et t ort Kent, moved that the
committee appointed te recommend a
course of action be also instructed te re
port at four p. m. en the proceedings of
yesterday. He urged all members te
stand firm, as he had confideuce that this
Deay would, be recognized as the legal
Legislature of 3Iaine by the courts as
well as by Congress. In fact, he said, he
had an assurance te this effect.
Dr. Bradbury said that he did net quite
like the attitude of sonic of his fellow
members, who did net seem te have that
determination and steadfastness necessary
for carrying the cause te a successful end.
He had firm faith that any authority ether
than a partisan supreme court would rec
ognize this as the legal Legislature, and he
urged the appointment of committees aud
the proceeding te regular business just as
if the usurping party had net prevented a
meeting in the place in which this body
was entitled te meet and sit. He read a
telegram from friends in Oxford urgiii"
the H usienists te stand firm, te recegnize
no usurping Legislature, and te
stand by the legal governor, Smith, and
many would be ready te sustain them te
the last. This, he said, was but a sample
of the messages which were coming in from
all parts of the state and showed hew the
people of Maine were feeling about the act
of violence which was committed. He said
nothing could have happened better for the
Fusionist cause, for it has strengthened
the weakening aud bound all together in a
firm bend.
Mr. Swan followed in much the same
strain. He went ever the entire proceed
ings from election day, accusing the Re
publicans of bribery and intimidation at
the polls ; of planning te get a partisan
decision from the supreme court and of
usurping the departments of the govern
ment elect. He declared the Fusionists
should sjy te the court, "Hands off, gen
tlemen ; we will net be suppressed bweur
partisan action ; wc will stand up for our
rights, and wc will have them." The dark
cloud of treason hangs ever us. The capi capi
tel is in the hands of rebels. We have the
right aud justice en our side. If we stand
lit in victory will crown our efforts.
The motion of Mr. Dickey was carried,
aud he then moved the appointment of a
committee of seven en pay roll and mile
age of members. He said many members
had come from long distances, were peer,
and needed money. If the state treasurer
refused te acknowledge our right te draw
funds for this purpose, it will be provided
for otherwise. The order was adopted
and the cemmitttce appointed by the
speaker.
Mr. Shaples followed, expressing satis
faction at the present attitude of this
body. He compared the situation of the
Fusionists te that of the Jews, as de
scribed in the 01d Testament. Like the
chosen people of' Ged, he said, we are
building a wall about our Jerusalem which
no man can pull clown. The Republicans
had invited him te come in, but he said,
" Gentlemen, you have nothing te come
into ; your Legislature is like a hotel with
no bed, no pantry, nothing te cat, nothing
but a sign."
His quaint remarks produced a great
amount of laughter and applause.
The Heuse at 10:30 took a recess until
four p. m.
The Fusion Senate met in an ante-room.
Mr. Patten said we are waiting a reply
whether they will entertain questions from
this body. He believed that intimidation
was rampant in the chair.
Mr. Barker said attempts were made te
bribe and he hoped that a resolution for an
investigation would pass.
Mr. Thompson, of Knox, believed that
frauds were practised, and justice reiiuired
that something should be done.
Mr. Thompson, of Franklin, was sure
that bribery had been practiced in his
county, and favored an investigation.
Mr. Ellis said that he wished the opin
ion of the court. He thought that the fu
sion Heuse was net legal, but the Senate
was a legal body. He thought that no
business transacted by the Heuse would
stand legally. Seme action must be taken
that will be recognized by the court ; also
some action that would affect the Green
back party in the spring elections.
Mr. Patten hail come te Augusta te de
the duty imposed upon him as a legislator.
He believed that both branches were legal
and that we should proceed te the trans
action of business. The Senate then ad
journed te 4 p. m.
Unlet Meb that Hangad a Negro fur
The following despatch from Warrenteu,
Va., gives the details of the lynching of
the negre, Arthur Jerdan :
This usually quiet little town was the
scene last night of the lynching of a negre
uuvKi cAneuiuiLutry circumstances, unine
27th of December last, Arthur Jerdan, a -copper-colored
negre of about forty years
of age, who had been employed as a farm
hand en the plantation of Nathan Cor-
der, a welT-to-de farmer living en the
Rappahannock river, in the upper end
of the county, eloped with Elvira Cor
der, twenty-four years old, daughter of the
man who had employed him. The negre
took the cars at Markham station, and was
met by the woman en the train at Salem,
fifteen miles further down. The injured
father of the irirl followed the miiltv nair
te Washington, and after a fruitless search
threught that city and Alexandria, re
turned broken-hearted te his home. On
Saturday last a letter was received by the
postmaster at Markham from a gentleman
living near Williamsport, Md., saying that
there was a negre with his white wife liv
ing near him, claiming te be from Mark
ham, and acting in such a man
ner as te excite his suspicions that
all was net right. Frem the description
given the couple were readily recognized
as Corder's daughter and Arthur Jerdan,
and a party of six of the best men in the
neighborhood armed and started immedi
ately te Williamsport ;te capture the latter
and bring him back te this ceuuty. They
were successful in finding him about eight
miles above Williamsport, and arrived with
him at Markham en Thursday night last.
On Friday Justice Lake cave the prisoner
a preliminary hearing and, committing him
for the action of the grand jury, gave him
in charge of a constable and two deputies
te carry him te jail at Warrenton, some 20
miles distant, where he arrived the same
night and was locked up.
On Sunday night a baud of sixty deter
mined men rode up te the deer of the jail,
aud calling out the jailer, presented a man
they brought with them tied te be taken
in charge. When the jailer came up te
receive his prisoner, a half-dozen pistols
were presented te ins head, and the keys
demanded. He surrendered the keys alter
some remonstrance, and a detail from the
infuriated crowd outside went in, . and,
placing a rope around Arthur Jerdan's
neck, dragged him forth and hanged him te
a tree some 300 yards from the deer of the
jail. The crowd then departed, from town
as noiselessly as they had come leaving the
lifeless body of the negre dangling from
the tree. His body was cut down at about
10 o'clock next morning by order of the
authorities and turned ever te the coroner.
The remarkable part of this lynching was
the entire absence of excitement, the mob
proceeding as if in the execution of a sol
emn duty in thus avenging tlic violation of
one of the most s.:red unwritten laws of
society. Arthur Jerdan was a hard-working
but rather impudent negre, and leaves
a colored wife and a larsrc family of chil
dren livinjr near Nathan Corder's house.
There is evidence that he used even the
formality of a marriage ceremony te ac
complish the ruin of his victim, who knew
very well that he was already married, and
rumor says had been criminally intimate
with him for some months before the elopement.
