Previous te his arrest he abused several women after begging feed from them. The defense called Kclley, who testified that he was traveling around in search of work when arrested ; he did net beg but said he get his meals through the generosity of the people. The defendant was deaf, or at least claimed te be, and under the law such persons arc excepted. The court instruc ted the jury te the effect that if they be lieved him te be deaf he should be ac quitted. The jury reimeied a verdict of guilty. Cem'th vs. William S. Brendel, violating liquor law, five cases. The defendant was returned by a constable at Augustf court and time bills were found against him, charging him with selling liquor without license, te miners, and en Sunday. At the November court two mere bills were found against him. They charged him with sell ing en Sunday and without license, as he continued in the business. The defendant lives at Red Run, in Brecknock town ship, in a house which formerly was licensed as a hotel, but which has net had a license of any kind for two years. A number or witnesses, including several miners, testified that they bought liquor at Di-endel's house en Sundays and at ether time's. Seme of the witnesses were unable te state what it was they drank ; some said it taste'd like whisky and ethers Unit it did net. The grand jury returned the following bills : True Bills Aujrustns Glass and Jehn T. "Warden, fornication and bastardy ; Gideon Williams, felonious assault and battery ; Philip J. Fertig, carrying concealed dead ly weapons. T'neredS. G. Sebastian, adultery, with county ler county ler costs. L .Michael bnyder is acquitted net be eause he had net violated the law, but because he had already been acquitted of the offence laid in the present in dictment. That Jujt acquittal was accomplished, as has been shown, by J. W. Jehnsen, ex-chairman ; J. Hay Brown, ex-chairman, and District Attorney Eshle man, chairman of the Republican coun ty committee, by false representa tions te the cemt, made for the corrupt consideration that the Snyder's were the best Republican workers in the Eighth ward, logically the last acquittal, like the first, was secured by a prostitution of the machinery of justice te serve the exi gencies of the Republican party. But as all the parties implicated as well as the judges belong te that party the court is unanimous for once that it need take no cognizance of the im position practiced upon it and the disgrace attaching te it.
