IT IS SAID THAT
Loek Out for Splinters.
A Detroit bootblack, who had strayed
out tol'eutiac, was en his return, having a
scat in a car with a benevolent old man.
Of course Shiner put up the window as
seen as he sat down. The wind blew in at
the rate of forty miles an hour, and the
old" man nresentlv said :
" Why de you keep the window up?"
" Don't I want some way te jump out if
the cars fall into the river," replied the
boy. Then he stuck his head and shoul
ders out, and the old man asked :
rBey, why de you lean out of the win
dow se far?"
"Don't I want te see if there are any
cattle en the track ?"
Let mc tell you a story," continued the
man as he hauled the boy in. "There was
once a boy thirteen years old named
Henry." .
" Didn't they call him Hank ?" inquired
the boy.
"' There was once a boy named Henry.
One day he took a journey by rail te a city
about twenty miles lrem ins nemc
"Didn't beat the conductor out of his
fvrc, did he?"
"This boy had been warned," continued
the old man, ' net te threw up the win
dow. An open window is dangerous en
account of the draughts and many a pei pei
seii has been blinded by the Hying sparks
and cinders."
" But he shoved up the winder, didn't
he ?
" Yes. He thought he knew mure than
any one else, and up it went. Net satisfied
with that he put his head and shoulders
out."
" Bound te see the country wasn't he?"
" The train sped onward," sighed the
old man, " and by and by it came along te
a signal pest. The boy was still leaning
out, and all of a sud "
"Held en, old man," intcirupted Shi
ner, as he wheeled around, " I knew what
you arc going te say ! Yeu are going te
say that the boy struck the pest with his
chin and knocked about three feet of the
top eir and tore up half a mile of track and
was put in state prison for life, but I want
you te understand that I'm no sun-fish !
I'm going te leek out of this window all I
want te, and if this railroad company
don't haul in its pests they must leek out
for splinters !"

" Marstcr, gin dc ole man fifty cents."
" Dan. veu area robber."
Hew? asked the astonished darkey,

" Didn't you see me put my hand info

'" Yes sah."
" Well you old rascal, you 10b mc of the

The old man received a dollar. Bowing
almost te the ground, while tears came out
and coursed through the age prints around

A man was arrainged in Little Reck en

"Haven't you get better sense than te

holding up a pepper-box pistol.
"Yes, sir."
" Don't you knew that the law says you

" Yes, sir ; but I didn't knew it was any
harm te carry such a pistol."
"But it is, sir. Any man that would
