Nothing illustrates and confirms our oft
expressed views and picdictiens regarding
the insanely high figures paid for the '79
Pennsylvania crop than the sale of 1,300
cases of '79 "Wisconsin te a large cigar
manufacturing firm of this city during the
past week. A few weeks age we said :
"The cicar manufacturer of tn-inv ?c nnt-
bound te confine himself te a erfnin Kft-ta
of seed leaf wrappers te comply with the
demands of his trade. With proper ma
nipulation he is enabled te make use of
ahy kind of seed tobacco, even for the
best seed and Havana cigars."
The packers new at Lancaster will te
ceive a blew for their heedless operations,
which, however, will be a wholesome les les
eon te them and the leaf tmrle A i.
apology for their doings, they eiler the
still questionable fact that the '79 Penn
sylvania tobacco is miraculously fine. Es
pecially the size is spoken of as being
something marvelous ; se much se it is
said, that one case of these wrappers is
equal te two cases of any old crop wrap
pers. Granting this te be true, it is the
mere inexcusable en their part te pay such
large prices for it. Because, if of this gi
irantic tobacco there are enlv 20 OOfi nc
of Pennsylvania (taking the figures of one
who has gleefully invested in this kind of
tobacco) they are equal te 40,000 cases
of the usual style of wrapper. In fact the
Pennsylvania crop, which is estimated
at 70,000 cases, will therefore swell te
90,000 if net mere. One of our most
prominent city cigar manufacturing firms
is purchasing heavily in New Yerk st.4ite ;
another, as we have noted above, has

material for producing tinted flame, and
the result was somewhat surprising, and
created consternation among the tempor
ary corpse?. The mixture instead of
burning -with serene hale, went en a tear,
sputtered, flashed, splashed, sparkled
hissed, cracked and Hew in fiery, blister
ing showers ever the hands and faces of
the boys who held the pans, and ever these
ui iue ueaa wnesc vitality was restored in
a miraculously natural manner. Ohe of

and a yawning bleeding slit across her
beautiful threat dead as a deer nail was
splashed, and revived with startling sud
denness. She howled, groaned and
flopped ever, exclaiming, "Oh! Oh! My

purchasing of this gloriously iine and
yielding '79 Pennsylvania? While in
ether branches of trade prices of goods
were and arc advancing, the leaf trade
has been and is almost dormant, and has
been se for months, while prices are
lower.
In another column wc show the increas
ed collection of tax from cigars during the
past eight months in one district of New
i ors ciry as compared witn the same pe
riod of the nrevinns vmp Tim inrnici Je
enormous ; nevertheless the leaf trade of
this city remained and remains quieter
than during 1878. Is this net feed for
thought for these who for- the past two
months have been recklessly paying, and
even are t.e-il.av- pnnrninns fiimnc Vi. .
bacce in the country ? They are drawing
their hard or probably easy earned money
from the banks, and, with feverish anxiety
pouring it into the pockets of grinning
fanners, who begin te leek upon the peo
ple as lunatics.
1 he large manufacturers here are wholly
independent of the packers and dealers of
seed leaf in this city, for there are always
avenues for them through which they can
obtain their supply of leaf. The above re f
ereuce in relation te revenue receipts illus
trates this best. The Western jobbers,
that is, new buy te an extremely large ex
tent from the farmers. Who remains te
buy the bulk of the tobacco? The small
cigar manufacturer and the small dealer.
And for that trade, which at the best is a
most troublesome and risky one, requiring
cuiihumi, drumming, tne capitalists, the
"best bleed," the "aristocrats" of the
packers, purchase '79 Pennsylvania, and
even Connecticut, at figures, taking alae
the enormous quantity of tobacco raised
last year into consideration, which must
be termed insane. Before this '79 Penn
sylvania is put upon the market a new
crop will be set out ; and if our prediction
that ever 100,000 cases will be raised in
that state next year proves incorrect, we
are willing te be condemned te read the

secutive times.
The desire te buy up the '78 Pennsyl
vania in this city and in packers' hands
in the country, continues. Whether it is
owing te some suddenly discovered merit
in this tobacco or the scarcity of ethers, is
hard te say. Helders certainly feel mere
encouraged, and if they have net lest any
thing, they hare certainly made no money
out of their investment se far. Fer Con
necticut seconds a lively demand has
sprung up, and altogether a little improve
ment in the tone of the market is notice

Havana Market shows considerable ac
tivity. Sales 700 bales. Reports about
the precarious condition of the crop in the
neiu are given as tue cause ler tne activity
here. Wc never knew a year when reports
failed te come in about the precarious con
dition of the crop in the field. Prices un

Tobacco Lcat.
Fer seed leaf there has been a geed de
mand, the regular sales reaching 1,744
cases ; and the total transactions of the
week embracing 1.500 additional cases of
Wisconsin Havanna seed leaf of the crop
of 1879, sold te a local cigar manufacturing
firm, making altogether 3,244 cases. Fer
1878 Pennsylvania leaf there was considera
ble inquiry, and, as will be noted below,
fair sales of that variety were effected.
The transactions embrace almost all vari
eties, and the outlook for all desirable
grades of old stock is regarded as very
premising.
Messrs. Bensel & Ce., the enterprising
tobacco inspectors of this city, have ap
pointed Messrs Philip Borngesser and
Wm. Dellaven te renresent them nt: Lan
caster, Pa., for the purpose of inspecting
tobacco.

Sales of seed leaf Tobacco reported by
J. S. Gaus's Sen & Ce., tobacco brokers,
Nes. 84 and 86 Wall street, New Yerk,
for the week ending Jan. 19, 1880 : 750
cases '78 Pennsylvania, 12c ; 450 cases
'78 Connecticut seconds, 10 te lie ; 150
cases '78 New England, 13 te 15c ; 200
cases sundries, 12 te 20c. Total 1,550
cases.
Net in the Bills.
The Omaha Herald gives this descrip
tion of a decidedly animated scene which
though net en the house bills, was enacted
en the stage at Denver, Colerado, net a
great while age. The play was Buffalo
Bill's. There are several " pictures" as
the profession terms them tableaux, the
spectators call them during the play.
One of these is the Mountain Meadow
massacre, which is illuminated and in
tensified by all the glory and glare of red

It was almost tee geed te be true, and
