LANCASTER DAILY INTELL1GENCEK, SATURDAY, JAIIARY 17, 1880.
.:
RECEIVING TOBACCO.
Anether Heavy Day's Transactions.
Leng before daybreak this morning the
rumble of heavy wagons might be heard
en the turnpikes and frozen reads that
converge towards this city, and ere sunrise
all the streets and avenues in the vicinity
of the tobacco warehouses were crowded
with wagons of all sorts and sizes leaded
with bales of the seductive leaf. Every
wagon had its precious freight covered
with carpets, blankets, quilts, coffee bags,
straw, cornfedder. liav or something else
te protect it from rain or sun as the case
might happen te be. Many of the
farmers brought in their wrappers in
splendid condition, each bale being nicely
covered with strong wrapping paper, and
some had their wagons covered with fine
carpets that looked as though they had
been taken from the parlor fleer for the
purpose. There was a geed deal of scram
bling among the teamsters te get ahead of
each ether, and occasionally there would
be a blockade that required the authority
of the police te break. There was very
little quarreling, however, and the unfer
tunates who had te wait half a day or
mere before they could unload comforted
themselves with frequent potations at the
neighboring saloons.
It is impossible te correctly estimate at
this hour the total amount of receipts. At
several warehouses much mere was re
ceived than en last Saturday, but ethers
received much less, and it is generally be
lieved that the total weight is net as heavy
as last Saturday's receipts. There is no
doubt that ever 1,000,000 pounds were re
ceived and paid for at the several city ware
houses. Kerbs & Spiess, Teller Brethers,
Jeseph II. Myers' Sens, Fatman & Ce.,
and Jehn Dellavcn, have each ic
ceived net less than 100,000 pounds ; A.
II. Sceville & Ce., M. Oppenhcimer, Buuzl
!c Dormitzer, Jehn Moere, Samuel Moere,
have each received from 40,000 te 7.1,000
pounds, L. & E. Wertheimer, Shreeder
fc Ben, Skiles & Frey, Jehn S. Behrer,
(Jcrshel & Brether, Harry Moere, Charles
Schuberth and F. Guslinsky, have received
respectively te-day from 10,000 te 30,000.
Seme of these firms receive almost every
day of the wcekand thus avoid the trouble
that attends these who receive only one
day in a week.. During the past week Jehn
S. Itehrer's receipts have been 250,000
pounds, Skiles & Ficy's about 70,000, and
E. Guslinsky & Ce. 00,000. A number of
ether extensive packim: house were re
ceiving te-day, but we were unable te visit
them. Taken all together the day's trans
actions may be reckoned the next te the
heaviest of the season.
There is still a geed deal of tobacco
being bought and sold, and prices are well
maintained. It is needless te enumerate
mere of the sales than will give the reader
a general idea of prevailing prices. Teller
Bres, have recently purchased the follow
ing lets in the vicinity of New Haven,
Warwick township : M. M. Fieles one
acre, at 21. 10 and 5 ; C. E. Burkheldcr,
two and a-half acres. 24 and 5 ; C. S.
Frankc, two acres, 20, 8 and 5 ; Peter
Witmer, one acre, 20, 8 and 4 ; C. Miller,
four acres, 14 and '.i ; Ucubcn Millhouse.
Maner, two acres 21, 7 and 3 ; II. L. Dct
wciler. West Hcmpfield, four and a-half
acres, 20 and 3.
There remains unsold a very censidera- ,
ble amount of 1870 tobacco, though choice
lets have become few and far between, and
buyers in search of them have te diivca
geed distance in order te secure them.
Within a week or ten days past net less
than 1,200 cases of 1878 tobacco has been
sold by local packers. Most of it has been
medium or low grade goods, for which
sorts there is a much mere active demand
than for fine goods.
Much inconvenience would be avoided
by both packers and farmers if the latter
would delay delivering their crops until
the packers want them. Several packers
have already given notice te the farmers
te deliver no mere until that which has
been already delivered can be packed and
get out of the read ; but, notwithstanding
these notices, some of the farmers persist
iu bringing in their stock te the inconveui incenveui
1'iice of themselves and the buyers. Let
them ''held up a little until they
failed for.

I'm Chase, Turkey Chase, and Accident.
Ycstcaday afternoon a fox chase took
place at the hotel of I). G. Fleming, in the
village of Xcil'villc. The crowd present
was very large and included a number of
prominent politicians and candidates from
the city and different sections of the county.
Keynard was let loose about half-past
three o'clock, and after being given a geed
Mart the dogs were put en his trail. After
a lively chase of about four miles the fox
was caught and killed by the dogs en a
hill near the village. The first men en tl e
.spot where the fox was caught were Jacob
Ituttcr and Ames Skiles.
A serious accident beensred toMr.Flem teMr.Flem
ing, the proprietor of the hotel, during the
chase, lie was riding at a rapid rate after
the fox, when his horse slipped and fell.
In falling Mr. Fleming's leg get under the
animal and was broken.
Uefere the fox was started theie was a
turkey chase held. A rather lean-looking
turkey was let loose, and after a short
start a party of men anil boys pursued it,
the conditions being that the man who
caught it should keep it. After running
and thing for about a square the gobbler
was captured by a man from Litiz, who
took off his shoes and ran through the
snow in his stocking feet for it.
BALL SHOOTING.
Practice at McGrann'ti Park.
Yesterday eight or ten members of
Game Protective association met at
the
Me-
beeu
Mc-
Granif s park, the u.-e of which had
kindly granted them by Jlr. B. J.
Granu, the proprietor, for the purpose of
practicing ball sheeting. Uy a resolution
of the association no pigeon sheeting, or
sheeting at balls with a prze is allowed ;
hence the sheeting yesterday was for prac
tice merely, and te test the merits of a
new kind of ball made te supersede the
objectionable glass ball in general u.se.
Tlie new ball is composed of lime, plaster,
and glue in certain proportions, and
when broken can de no dam
age te bare-footed pcplc or ani
mals that may chance te step upon
the fragments. The sheeting yesterday
was pretty geed considering the inexperi
ence of some of the members. Out of 5J0
balls shot at Thes. C. AViley broke 23 ;
Alderman Spurrier, 24 ; Frank R. Diffen
derffer, 22 ; Hareld Wickersliain. 1!) ; Win.
M. Dean, 19 ; Postmaster Marshall, 18 ;
and the ether contestants a less number.
In this connection we may state the as-
-sociatien premises te be quite a success, its
membership embracing many of the best
men in the city. Preliminary measures
.have been taken for application te the
court for a charter, which wiU no doubt be
granted, and the association will then be
much better able te protect the game of
the county from the ravages of the pot
hunters. THE WALKING MATCH.
Drawing te a Clese Geed Werk Dene Last
Night.
There was was a geed attendance en
the pedestrians at Franke's garden last
night. The men did some excellent work,
and wcie rewarced with frequent applause.
Fer miles together there was a most ani
mated struggle in square heel and-tee
walking, in which Sheid, Pierce and Mc
Caffrey participated. Harvey also gave a
fine exhibition of running, having made
nearly 200 laps without stepping. He has
wonderful endurance, but frequently leaves
the track. Seeing that there is no money
in it, he wisely refrains from wearing him
self out. Sheid maintains a safe lead. At
10 e'clgck this morning the score steed :
Sheid 400 ; Pierce 392 ; McCaffrey 384 ;
Harvey 293.
Murray, who left the track night before
last, will give an exhibition walk this
evening before the wind-up of the contest.
At half-past two o'clock this afternoon
the score steed : Sheid, 415 ; Pierce,
408 ; McCaffrey, 390 ; Harvey, 305.
