FROZEN TO DEATH.
Tragic Death of fi Old Citizen.
On Monday evening, about dusk, Mar
tin Bellinger, a man about 75 years of age,
who resided in Litiz, with bis son, Jehn
Bellinger, left the beuse and said he was
going te visit a neighbor. lie did net re
turn and it has since been ascertained that
he went west from the village. At neon
yesterday, Jehn Bardoff and young Buch,
scholars of Buch's school-house, en their
way te Litiz, saw old Mr. Bellinger lying
in one of David Buch's grain fields, about
a mile west of Litiz. They ran te him and
found him dead. He had rolled about in
the suew, and in his hands were clutched
bunches of the growing wheat, his hat
under his arm, a huge stick used as a cane
near by, and his pipe lying aside, as if he
had died in agony.
Deputy Corener Iteideubach held an in
quest and the jury concluded that he froze
te death, having fallen in a fit while insane.
3Ir. Bellinger, who was an old citizen
and a man of wealth.lest his wife by death
some fifteen years age. He owned the first
farm en the east side of the turnpike south
of Litiz, and after his wife's death retired
te the village, residing with his son. Fer
four or live years his mind has been im
paired and he has had a trustee ever his
estate. Lately he has exhibited unusual
symptens of lunacy, and it is supposed
that he wandered off in a temporary aber
ration, fell and was frozen te death. He
leaves three sons and a daughter, all married.

house should net forget that the en
tertainment ferthe benefit of the soup fund
comes off in the opera house en Saturday
of next week ; and it is proper also te re
mind them that the tickets are net going
off as rapidly as is desirable and that the
voluntary contributions te the soup fund
are net this year as liberal as they have
been en some former occasions. The pres
ent severe spell of weather has thrown
many peer people who depend en out-deer
employment out of work, and some of
them will suffer unless they receive relief
from the soup house, or at the hands of
the charitable.

There was a fair attendance at Franke's
garden last evening, and there was some
very fine walking done by all of the con
testants in the 130 hours match that com
menced en Monday. Pierce, who was in
lead, showed off te the best advantage. lie
is very graceful, walked regularly and
rapidly, showed no signs of fatigue, while
he constantly were a nleasant. cheerful
smile. Sclieid, who was second best, man
at i) o'clock last night, walked splendidly,
and although he is rather thin and lank
looking, showed greater speed last night
than any of his competitors. Murray, who
was third, came en the track rather still",
but when he had limbered up a little, he
walked with remarkable strength, though
rather ungracefully, shrugging his
shoulders and swinging his arms vi
olently when going at full speed.
McCaffrey, who was third, appeared te be
reserving his powers. He made a few
line spurts of speed, but net of sufficient
lengths te tire him, and then went te his
tent, but apparently net te "sulk."' Har
vey, who is the shortest if net the lightest
of the contestants, sauntered along leis
urely, talked with any one that would talk
with him, took an occasional glass of beer,
and then calling upon one of the scorers te
" time him," would dash around the ring
at a rattling rate, passing and repassing
all the ethers, and when tired would pep
off te bed for awhile, reeppcaring seen
afterwards and going through the same
performance. At 10 o'clock p. m., the
score steed as fellows : Pierce, 131 miles :
Scheid, 124 miles ; Murray, 121 miles ; Mc
Caffrey, 113 miles; Harvey, 112 miles.
The score at 11 o'clock a. m. te-day was
Scheid, 133 ; Pierce, 133 ; Murray) 131 ;
Harvey, 148 ; McCaffrey, 147.

The Farmers' national bank te-day had
two of the beautiful time-locks, made by
the Yale manufacturing company, put
upon the safes in the bank one of
them being placed en the deer of the

heretofore en the safes, but are merely an
additional security, preventing any one

Improved Varieties or Wheat.
The state convention of millers, which
held two sessions in Harrisbuig yesterday,
was attended by about eighty members of
one hundred and seventeen composing the
association. Among the important sub
jects discussed was a preposition made by
the committee en grade and inspection of
wheat that a committee composed of one
member from each county in the state be
appointed te agitate among the millers
and fanners a movement looking te the
improvement of the varieties of wheat
and the establishment of an equit
able value of the cereal at the mills.
The executive committee of the associa
tion was authorized te carry out the above
views. A resolution was passed for in
creased privileges en railroads in the
transportation of wheat, allowing it te be
milled while in transit, the railroad com
panies te be compensated for extra switch
ing aud ether incidental expenses. The
next convention will be held en Octeb er
12th at Wilkesbanc.

oner of Marietta, held an inquest en flic
body of a little child named Geerge W.
McElroy, of that place, which was found
dead m bed having suffocated by getting

rendered a verdict of " death through con
gestion of the lungs consequent upon par
t'al suffocation, purely accidental."'

ex-Sheriff Adam Bare, of this county, was
the eldest ex-sheriff living in the state, if
net in the United States. Fer this dis
tinction a contemporary presents the name
of Lewis Rockwell, of Green township,
Pike county, who is 101 years of age, and
who has served both as sheriff and treas
urer of his county. Ex-Sheriff Rockwell
is a hearty old veteran jret, and his wife is
living at the age of 93; but we regret te
say that some of his offspring have gene
back en the old man, aud that he is at
present in court at Milferd, asking that
these undutiful children be compelled te
support him.

Yesterday, Harry Shaub, a boy, who is
employed in the livery stable of Patrick
Cherry, was severely bitten in the hand by
a horse, which he was harnessing. His
wound was dressed at the drug .store of A.
G. Frcy. The hand is swollen te-day and
is likely te be sere for some time.
Funeral.
The funeral of Rcinhard Rcineer took
place from his late residence en Derwart
street, this morning. The interment was
made at St. Jeseph's cemetery, and Pest
84, G. A. R., attended the funeral in a
bedv.

Police Cases.
Before Alderman Spurrier last evening,
Rev. Wm. lfpCecls, colored, had a hear
ing of a charge of assault and battery pre
ferred against him by Sal lie Winters, also
colored. The case was dismissed, com
plainant failing te make geed her com
plaint. Before Alderman McCouemy yesterday
afternoon, Samuel Wilsen and Edward
Wilmet, for drunken and disorderly con
duct were committed te the county jail for
30 days each.
Before Alderman Barr Rebert Wilsen
and James McLaughlin, for drunken and
disorderly conduct, were committed for 13
days each.
Officers Installed.
Yesterday Henry Baumgardner, deputy
grand master of the Grand Ledge of A.
Y. JL for Yerk and Lancaster counties,
accompanied by Majer J. Rehrcr and
Wm. A. Morten, visited Shrewsbury, Yerk
county, and installed the efficeis of Ledge
Ne. 423. After the installation the gen
tlemen weie taken te the house of Mr. J.
Kehler, master of the ledge, where they
were handsomely entertained. They re
turned te Lancaster this morning.

who during fifteen years has held
many public and private offices of
trust has left town because of $7,000
shortage in trust funds held for his brother-in-law.
The money, it is said, has gene te
help relatives in distress. Efferts are
being made te induce Mr. Peck te return,
as he is feared te be partially insane.

An Old Man Brutally Assassinated.

Jacob Swanger, aged CO, was found horri
bly mutilated in his cabin in "Washington
county, en Friday morning last. lie was
evidently murdered with an axe for the
money he was supposed te have in his
