In the placid period that preceded the war, Canten, Ky., was one of the princi pal shipping ports for a large section et that portion of " Ged's country " included in western Kentucky. It was also the brag town of the region for marble and checker players. Everv drv ami nlpfiannt afternoon the principal citizens of Canten raigut be leund in the Street, beguiling with diminutive spheres the tedium of waiting for business te come te them. "When it was tee dark te play marbles they devoted themselves te checkers. Their skill in both of these noble games was pre-eminent, and whatever stranrcr mn. sumed te tackle any of them was suddenly and severely worsted. The business of Canten is net what it was, but the renown of her solid citizens as wonderful manipulators of marbles and checkermen is still unsurpasbed. But there are hours when it is impossible te play marbles, and when even the excite ment of checkers is wearisome te t.hn smii Then they have ether resources. They tell stories of hunting and ether exploits, and some of their sterirs would seem, te a per son unacquainted with the simple truth fulness of these men, even mere marvel ous than their skill at the games that have been specified. It is true that there is but little te brag about new-a-days, but much is te be said of the times when big game was plentiful in Kentucky. The ether iiigni, me conversation, alter ranging ever me wneie gamut ei game, finally became flxed upon bears, and this shut out the young men, most of whom had never seen a bear outside of a menagerie. "Speakin' of bears," said Uncle Sam Sheerer, a veteran who looked as if he might have fought by the side of Gen. Leslie Coombs at the battle of the Kiver Raisin, "thar's a powerful sight of sense in a mule, though that's nethin new. Seme folks say that nobody but a nigger understands mule, but it's my notion that nobody but a mule understands him- M.-H. iuu an may ininic you knew as much about mules as anybody, but did you ever sec a mule fight a bear? Ne? Well, I have, and I owned the mule that did it. Way back in I reckon we needn't mind the year I was ridin' through a patch of canebrake en a big black mule, when a sizable bear came out of the brush and made for me. I didn't have my rifle along, and se I whipped up the mule te get out of the way. That mule made geed time out of the canebrakc, but when wc get into the timber, he stepped in the middle of a glade, and nothing eeuld make the cussed crittur stir an inch. As the bear was com in' en at a ricrht peart nace. I slipped off the dum feel's back, and shinned it up a tree. When I was well fixed in the branches, I looked down into the glade and saw a lcetle the queerest sight that my eyes had ever been treated te. The mule faced the bear and the bear came head en at the mule. Just as old Brownie was ready te fight, the mule gath ered his heels together and flew ever his head like shot out of a shovel. That bear was astonished nearly out of his senses ; but as seen as he could get his wits he turned square around and made for the mule. Again the mule gathered himself up and gave a nym' leap evear the bear s head, lightin' clear en t'ether side. If that game wasn't kept up for full half an hour then my name ain't Sam Sheerer, and I didn't sit up in that tree watchin' the whole performance. The mule was in the highest kind of spirits and enjoyed the fun up te the top notch, te judge by the way he snorted and snickered whenever he went ever old Brownie. But the bear was the maddest crittur, I reckon, that ever steed en four legs. He wheeled and turned, and growled and reared, and snapped and slapped, until he wasn't able te de justice te the subject any mere ; then he sat up en his haunches and panted, with his big red tongue lolling out. Then was the time for the mule te show fieht. and he backed up his battery. The first time he let his heels fly he took the bear square en the side of the head, and sent him sprawling. Then he examined his work, and snickered when he saw that the job was done, and I slipped down the tree and went and cut the bear's threat. New, gentlemen, it is a fact that befere that time the mule would never allow me te carry as much as a sheepskin en his back ; but he steed still and let me lead the bear en te the saddle, and a mighty tough job I had of it. Per haps you would like te knew hew mueh that bear weighed?" "I reckon we may as well let that part of the story go, Uncle Sammy, "said Judge Greenway, another grizzled veteran. "Yeu have been se careful te stiek te the plain facts se far that I am afraid you might be tempted te stretch it in the matter of weight. There's mere things thau mules that can kill bears, and mere things than guns and traps. When I lived in the Green River county, before most of you were born, I had a queer experience with a bear. I had been te the nearest store, a matter of a dozen miles or se, en feet, ivs my only horse was dead lame, te get some groceries, and was bringing home two quart bottles of whisky and a ball of cord. Going through the weeds I reused up a big bear that came for me full tilt, I gave him a shot from my rifle, and the bullet struck him in the left foreleg and hurt him pretty badly ; but that only made him mad, and he pushed for me en three legs faster than before. There was nothing te de but te run for it, and se I pulled feet for a tall young hickory and scrambled up as quick as I could, dropping my rifle at the feet of the tree. The bear couldn't climb with three legs, but it was plain te be seen he wanted me, and meant te have me if he could get me. Se he smelt around for awhile, and then sat down and waited. In the course of time this sort of thing began te grew mighty tiresome, and I saw that I had te de something. I had a bottle of whisky in each pocket. "Wait a minute, judge," interposed a young lawyer from Hopkinsville, who prided himself en his cress examination. "I would like te knew hew you could climb that tree in a hurry, with a bottle of whisky in each pocket, and net break one of them" "Yeung man," sternly replied the judge, "you were born tee late if you don't knew that no true Kentuckian ever breaks a bottle of whisky under any cir cumstances. As I said, I had a bottle of whisky in each pocket, and I knew what an imitative creetur a bear is. I hated te lese the whisky, but felt that I must give up that or my life. I tied the end of my cord around the neck of one of the bottles, held it up te my month as if I was taking a big drink, and then let it down te the bear, who had been watching me as if he wanted some. He took held of it as care fully as any of us could de, stuffed it into his jaw, and didn't take it awar until he had drained the last drop. It astonished above proof, and then he get a feeling geed, and you may be sure he showed it. He began by patting and rubbing himself, and then he rolled ever and tumbled about for a while, and finally he sat up en his haunches, swaying about and winking at me fairly begging for mere whisky. I saw he would have te get it ; se I hauled up my cord and made it fast te the ether bottle. I put that bottle te mv mouth, and con. fess that I allowed a few drops te slip through my gullet before I let down te the bear, lie disposed of it in short order, and then began the queerest cutting up, I reckon, that whisky ever caused. That bear was drunk in proportion te his size He played with the bottle, and he played with the line attached te it, and I kept letting out mere Hue for him te Dlav with. hoping that he would tangle himself up in it, and he seen did se. He forget his wounded leg, and hopped about, and rolled ever and ever, until he was completely done out. The whisky gradually made him stupid, and at last be was se wound up in tue cord that lie couldn't stir, and I don't suppose he cared te. Then I came down from the tree and cut his threat, and went home te get help te brinjr him away. The first nieces of his meat that we cooked " "Maybe you had better step there, judge," said old Cel. Neblett. "Your reputation for telling the truth is se geed that we don't want you te stain it by any exaggeration. After all, gentlemen, the best way te kill a bear is te sheet him, provided a man has a geed rifle, and knows hew te use it. Bears were plenty when I settled en Little River, and we used te make up parties te hunt them. A bear hunt was made uu for the second week in November after I moved en te my land, and I was asken te join it. I wasn't much acquainted with the neighborhood, and the people didn't knew my ways ; se I thought I might run a joke en them and make them supply me with bear meat te lay in for the winter. It is ene thine. you knew, te kill a bear, and another thing te get him home. Seme ten days befere the hunt was te ceme off I went out and baited the bears and then went out and watched for them. By geed luck I struck three of them that day, but I didn't kill them net a bear. I don't suppose, gentlemen, that there was a man in Kentucky who could outshoot me in these days, and I put in some of my best work en theso bears. I marked each ene of them exactly alike by sheeting off the tip of the right car and putting a bullet through the left ear. That was all I want ed et the bears just then. When the day for the hunt came along and the party call ed at my place te pick me up, I told them that I was under the weather and didn't allow that I felt well enough te go. ' I wish I could go,' I said, ' because I've get some tame bears loose in the weeds and would like te leek them up.' They stared at me as if they allowed that I was crazy. 'Perhaps you don't believe me,' I said, but what I tell you is a fact. There ara five of these bears that I raised and petted, anil they are all marked with my hog mark. I have been meaning te get them home before winter, and lay in the meat of three or four of them.' At this they laughed in my face. ' There's no joke about it, gentlemen,' said I, 'my mark is a crop off the right ear and a hole in the left. If you happen te sheet any bears with that mark en them, you may knew that they belong te me? They premised that if they get any bears marked in that way they would bring them home te me, and went off laughing. New, gentlemen, it is the truth, if I ever told the truth in my life, that that party get just four bears en that hunt, and three of them were marked with my mark. They brought these three bears home te me. and I had plenty of bear meat for the winter, and after that nobody in the set tlement ever thought of disputing my word about anything." "I would like te knew," remarked that intrusive young lawyer from Hopkins ville, "why you didn't sheet theso bears instead of taking all that trouble te mark them." " Yeung man," rejoined the colonel in accents that mingled sorrow with severity, " it is plain te be seen that you didn't live in them days," and that was the last effort of the Hopkinsville lawyer. One day he took a child off into the weeds and remained a whele day, while the distracted mother and sympa- inizmg menus were scouring the country round, and dragging cisterns for the lest little ene.
