Within a fork -where two reads meet,
-And form as one a broader street
That town ward leads, Ms tell house stand-,
Exacting tribute from both hands.
' Tall, slender beams, and swinging light,
With ropes te pull them down at night.
Wire well-sweeps lean, or fish-reds sly.
Te catch the fishes going by.
Here lias he been, year In anil out.
Fer halt a century, about ;
Watching the travel, up and down.
Te and from the market town ;
Exchanging grcetinge, jokes anil newa,
And sometimes, briefly, weighty views ;
As much a landmark as atrec
lias this old tell-man come te be.
With bits of information rife.
Frem panoramic peeps of life,
A woven web of history
Of all tliat region formed has he.
Within the tell-house many hours,
The cold, or heat, or sudden shewcr.-
Excusc I've made, te hear the geed
Old yarns of my own neighborhood,
But e'er alert his car le leel
The faintest sound of hoof or wheel.
The story steps and strides he out
Te man the gate, a warder stout,
He meets all comers, day and night,
And, like a star, his lantern light
Gleams in summer. Hashes in cold
When does he sleep, this watchman old 7
A huckster's sorry her.se he checks,
And doleful lewls stretch out their neck'-,
While en the box, a sunken heap.
The greasy huckster snores, asleep.
Docter passes anil wags his head,
Tells who is born, who sick, who dead.
Farmer's wagon shriek's down the hill
And pays the gate fee back Irem mill.
Hallooing men and barking dogs
Urge en a drove of trudging hogs.
A monster stuck rolls down the way
Of timothy or clever hay.
Emigrant's dusty, covered car.
Coming and going very far.
Under the pike's white cloud there move
A horseman unrt a cattle drove.
A family in .Sunday rig,
A preacher in his rocking gig,
They pass the gate and de net pay,
There is no charge te church te-day.
With mirth and shout and bounding steed,
The groom and bride their party lead ;
Or, slowly wending, comes a train
Whose cliarge will net pass by again.
Or, le ! the royal pageant see
A circus and menagerie.
Along the suewy turnpike track
The singing wheels go forth and back.
And sleigh-belled her.-es rush and smoke.
And giddy riders laugh and joke.
The tell-gate keeper fears the rain
"Ne wear en metal, all clear gain :
