The Best Variety Shew of the Season.
Last evening the best variety show of
the season was given in the opera house
by the "Watsen, Ellis and Kerncll com
pany. The house was net large, hut a
mere enthusiastic and better pleased au
dience has net sat there for some time.
The performance opened with an old sketch
entitled " A Practical Jeke." Alice Bate
man, a fine clog dancer, followed, after
which R. G. Allen played the banjo, told
stories and san songs in a taking style.
The horizontal bar performance of the
Suydani Brethers was excellent, their
equals net having appeared here this sea
son, if ever. Harry and Jehn Kerncll, the
Irish comedians, "caught" the house the
moment they came en the stage. They
were brimful of wit, and their reception
was of the warmest kind. Beth are
capital dancers and comedians and they
were recalled a number of times ; Clara
Moere, a pleasing little lady,
sang a number of songs, appear
ing in different costumes ; "Watsen
and Ellis form a strong Dutch team, and
there is probably no pair in this country
capable of surpassing them in their pecu
liar line of business. Thatcher and Hume
aie very geed acrobatic dancers, but their
singing was only fair. One of the best
features of the evening's show was
the club swinging of Gus Hill. He is very
graceful in all the difficult movements
which he makes, and throws, with appar
ent cake, clubs weighing ej pounds. The
comedy of " A Splendid Time," closed
the entertainment. It was extremely
funny, and Harry Watsen as Mr. Cehn
and Harry Kerncll as Mr. Oitcn almost
convulsed the audience with laughter. It
was the best variety show that has visited
us since Teny Paster was here last season
and deserved better patronage.
The Influx of Tobacco.
The favorable weather for the stripping
and shipping of tobacco continues, and from
early morning until the hour at which we
go te press te-day there has been the
greatest activity in the trade, all the ware
houses being thronged with farmers bring
ing in their crops, and the warehouse
men beinj: actively encased in re
ceiving it. It is estimated that te-day's
business is the largest of the season. It is
impost ible te make a fair estimate of the
amount actually received, but the buyers
seem te be satisfied with their purchases
and the farmers with the prices received.

Hen. Seth Yocum, whose congressional
seat is contested by ex-Governer Curtin,
has left for Washington te argue the case
of his client. At 7 o'clock p. m. the sub
committee having in charge the case of
Curtin vs. Yocum, Twentieth Pennsylva
nia district, will meet and hear argu
ments. Again in Luck.

ate te-day were these of James II. 3Iar
shall te be postmaster at Lancaster, and

A Loese Calculation.
Seme "smart Alecks" would undertake
te disprove the calculation of the finance
committee of councils, that our bended
municipal debt is en the verge of the con
stitutional limit, by subtracting the sink
ing fund from the total bended indebted
ness. This is a (inancial error, approved
by no respectable authority en the subject
of public indebtedness or constitutional
law. The sinking fund is sacredly set
apart for a special purpose) te gradually
wipe out the debt. Ne debt can be created
hereafter without making such prevision
for its gradual redemption, and te count
e!T the sinking fund in calculating the
amount of the debt in law is only little
"better than te appropriate it at once te
paying dcpaitnicut deficiencies. Such
methods of calculation would only tend te
keep cities forever in debt, and te put
money into a sinking fund would be pour
ing water into a bottomless tub.

The bride is well known in this city and
county, and the groom is a frequent visitor

known in Lancaster, has just returned from

lecture en "Womanhood in Hiakspcare," in
the Lancaster opera house, en Friday evening,
January IB. Mr. Bruce was introduced in San
Francisce as their "l'ieneer Lecturer in Liter
ature,"' and at the close of his third public lec
ture, one of the well-known lawyers of that
city adduced the audience from the platform
and .said that Mr. Bruce's lectures, "Burns,""

ion, net only the lincst ever delivered in that

night destroyed buildings numbers 385, 387
and 389 Main street. Three firemen were
buried by falling walls. Peter Metz was
killed and Ed Leenard seriously injured.
The third man had an arm and a leg

Tlie Mishap or a Freight Train.

two cars of a freight train en the Fitch
burg railroad get loose this morning at
Athel and ran back down grade half a
mile, meeting an extra freight train. The
engine and six cars of the latter were
wrecked. An unknown man was seriously

Net te Strike.
Seme time age the Knights of Laber in
Schuylkill county passed a resolution de
manding that basis wages should be paid
for mining after January 1, 1S80, and
threatening a strike if the demand was net
complied with. Uasis wages for December,

but, as usual, the rule of the Philadelphia
and Heading company will govern the
matter and will raise the rate te eight per

An afternoon paper reports that there is
much dissatisfaction among the miners,
especially in the upper part of the county,
and that a strike is freely threatened. One
of the leaders of the order was asked
if the report was correct. "Ne," was
the reply. "I can answer that very
positively. A strike was talked of, but the
cooler heads of the order met. here last Sat
urday and squelched the whole business.
There will be no strike. There is no need
of one. The men are making fair wages,
and arc satisfied that they can gain noth
ing by such a movement. Nobody wants
te strike except a few het-heads, who arc
always dissatisfied. It was for the
special purpose of settling the grumblers,
by taking decisive action against them,
that Saturday's meeting was called, and
this eflieial action decides the business,
.for the present at least. The Schuylkill
tuen will net strike."
Augusta, Me., Jan. 7. In the Heuse
Assistant Clerk Gibbs proceeded te call
the certified roll of members. Mr. Hale
took the fleer and claimed that certain elec
ted members of the Heuse from cities'
are net en the roll, and moved that they '
be included. This led te a lengthy speech
from Mr. Hale, and objections from the
ether side. Hale was ruled out of
order by the assistant clerk who
refused te put his ( Hale's motion.
whereupon the Republicans withdrew
from further participation in the proceed
ings. A message was then sent te the
governor and ceilncil, stating that a
quorum of members of the Heuso was
present and ready te be qualified.
Bosten, Jan. 7. A special dispatch
from Augusta, Maine, te the Journal,says:
An immense crowd is in attendance
at the state house. The rotunda, cor
ridors, committee rooms and galleries, .
being jammed. The members-elect with
certificates and without, and the counted
out members, with all contestants, are ad
mitted te the lloer of both branches.
At 9:40 a. m. the Assembly was called te
order by Assistant Clerk Gibbs. Jehn C.
Talbot announced the drawing of scats.
Mr. Butler, of Vassalboro, was the
first Republican te draw his seat. The
Republicans are net generally drawing
seats. Mr. Staples, clerk of the Heuse, is
present, but docs net act, Mr. Gibbs pre-sidinjr.
Later.
The Republicans came in and took part
in the drawing and every member respond
ed except Messrs. Veter, of Fanningten,
and Snow, of Skewhcgan, and the four
teen undisfranchiscd cities and towns.
At 10:80 the governor and council at
tended in the Senate and administered the
oath of eflice. The Senate organized by
the choice of Democratic ellicers, the Re
publicans refraining from voting.
In the Heuse, Rev. Mr. "Wales, of Bid Bid
deferd, representative elect, opened the
session by prayer. Asssistant Secretary
Gibbs called the certified roll, furnished
by the secretary of state, askinjr the mem
bers te respond as their names were called.
All responded except Snow and Veter.
Aueusta, Me. Jan. 7. Great excite
ment prevailed during Mr. Hale's re
marks and uproareus applause followed.
After notification te the governor
that a quorum was present the governor
appeared and proceeded te qualify tho the
membcrs. He subsequently announced
that 76 members, being a quorum, had
taken and subscribed the necessary oaths,
and were the regularly and duly consti
tuted Heuse of Representatives.
This announcement received rounds of
applause from the outside.
Gov. Garcclen said that he new put into
their hands the opinion of the supreme
court as well as the petition of gentlemen
from certain cities claiming scats, and in
voked their careful consideration of the
same.
Three cheers were given for Governer
Garcclen, followed by prolonged hisses.
The quorum is made of 75 Fusieuists and
one Republican, Eugene Hale. The Fu Fu
seouists net participating arc Spraul, of
Veasie, Veter, of Fanningten, and Snow,
of Skewhcgan.
The Senate organized by electing Jehn
Lamson president, A.G.Andrews secretary,
Francis R, Green assistant secretary, ami
the ether Fusion ellicers nominated in the
caucus last night.
Men Hung and Lynched In 1870.
The hangman's record for the past year
shows that 101 men expiated their crimes
en the gallows, an increase of five ever
that of the preceding year. Net a woman
was hanged, the only one sentenced te
death having been commuted. Twe men
.suU'crcd the death penalty by sheeting, one
in Utah and the ether in Texas, the
laws giving them the choice of
death, either en the scaffold or by
the bullet. Eight were hanged for
wife murder. 7 for outrage, 4 for burglary,
1 for fratricide, 1 for infanticide, 1 for
killing his step daughter and another for
murdering his son. There were were 8
double and 1 triple hangings. Four per
sons cheated the gallows by committing
suicide before the day set for their execu
tion. In the list of states in which
the executions took place North
Carolina and Texas lead elf with
12 each ; Pennsylvania, 10 ; Oregon,
7 ; Virginia, 0 ; Georgia, i ; Arkansas, 0 ;
California, 5 ; Missouri, 5 ; Indiana, 4 ; Vcr

of them being negrees. Fifty-five whites

reputation as Hangman's Day, having 72
executions; Thursday comes next with 13;
Wednesday. 5 ; Tuesday, 5 ; Saturday, 4 ;
and Monday, 2.
In addition te the above, 74 men were
lynched by mobs in the following states
and territories : Kentucky, 8 ; Colerado,

Terrible Kerosene Accident.
Iii Syracuse, N. Y., five persons were
tibeckingly burned by an explosion of ker--ehfiiie
oil. Jehn T. Cassidy, residing in the
Third ward, was cleaning his wife's skates
with kerosene. He sat beside a het stove
iind his wife was watching the operation.
As .Cassidy was in the act of turning the
oil from the can te a cloth he held in his
.hand the vapor caught lire and an explosion
followed. Cassidy was unhurt, but the
burning oil covered his wife, his baby
lying in the cradle and his little sister aged
seven vears. Mrs. Cassidy ran out te a

Men and Thing.
Archibald Ferbes, the noted English
war correspondent, has been the vietim of
Irish wrath in a way which he will net
seen forget. Recently he was an
nounced te lecture in Cerk. Fer days past
the city had been covered with .placards
calling attention te letters reviling the
Irish race written by Mr. Ferbes in 1875.
The house was accordingly filled with a
hostile audience, who refused te hear the
lecturer. He tetircd, and the gas was
turned off.
Referring te Sawyer's criticisms and
challenges, Edisen says : " The secret of
his animosity te me lies in the fact that I
refused te have any business transactions
with him. Seme time age Sawyer wrote
me a note, which I still have. It was
couched in language something like this :
' Let bygones be bygones. Take me in with
you en your light. I will meet you at the
Aster house this evening at 8 o'clock te
talk it ever.' Well, I wrote him a' note
politely declining te meet him or te take
him into partnership." If Sawyer can get
that plaster off his mouth he will deserve
te be "taken in."
