terian Church.
Anether brilliant wedding, attracting the
attention and presence of the most fashion
able society circles of Lancaster, was sol
emnized in the Presbyterian church, this
city, at 3 p. m. te-day. The bride was
Miss Minnie Ashbridge, daughter of Mrs.
S. E. Ashbridge, 34'i West King street, one
of the most beautiful, accemplished and
popular young ladies in Lancaster society.
The groom was Mr. Alexander J. Ged by,
a young gentleman of lialtimere, though
well-known aud highly popular in this
city.
There were no groomsmen and the
ladies attendant en the bride were Miss
Minnie Ashbridge, of Downingtewu ;Miss
Paxton, of Carlisle ; Miss "Woodward, of
Philadelphia ; Miss Spencc, of Baltimore,
and Miss Lulu Bell, of Lancaster. The
ushers were Messrs. B. Randall, Alex.
Falconer, J. M "Weed and F. Donaldsen,
of Baltimore, and Gee. Steinman, of Lan
caster, the entire bridal party being in
full dress.
The pulpit of the church was handsomely
decorated and flanked with flowers, grow
ing plants and vines. Wreaths of smilax,
ornamented with clusters of refebud.'-, cov
ered the altar, aud ornamental vines and
leaves were trailed around its base ; at the
sides in pets and vases was a rich profu
sion of growing plants and choice flowers,
the whole forming a beautiful spectacle of
artistic arrangement and exhaling rich
perfumes.
The ceremony was pronounced, after the
Presbyterian ritual, by Rev. J.Y. Mitchell.
After the wedding there was a private
reception of the bridal party and relatives
at the residence of Mrs. Ashbridge ; and
Mr. and Mrs. Godby left, eastward, at .1:20
p. in., en their wedding tour.

Underkceper Appointed.
At a late hour yesterday afternoon the
prison inspectors completed their appoint
ments by electing Frederick S. Albright
first under-kcepcr, vice Geerge A. Smith.
It may net be generally known, but it is a
fact, that the prison officials elected yester
day will net assume their positions until
the first Monday in April.

date of Lancaster, Jan. e, and (of all
names) ever the signature of " Muhlen
berg." The statement published in the Sun of
the '-M iust., that 1,000 Germans of Dau
phin county will vote against Grant if
nominated for a third term is unquestion
ably a low estimate, if the feeling of the
Germans of Lancaster county upon this
subject is any indication of the .sentiment
ei our adjoining neignuers in unupuin
county.
Since the time has been fixed for the
meeting of the state convention wc call it

Grant lias been of the most bitter charac
ter. I have conversed with Thes. 15.
Cei'hi-an, member of the state committee ;
J. Hay Mi own, chairman of the eeuuty
committee; State Senater Myliu, Con

inent oiliccheldcrs. and with many of the
leading private citizens of the county, and
they all agree that if Grant should be nom
inated at Chicago, Lancaster county can
not safely be counted en te give a majority
for the Republicans.
Lancaster county is the third in point of
population in the stale. Three-fourths of
our citizens sp.'ak the German language,
and a mere intelligent people cannot be
found anyhow. With geed candidates the
county is geed for 7.000 Republican major
ity. It gave (1,701 Republican majority at
the la.st gubernatorial election ; and
with tiie .statement from men whose
word cannot lie questioned that " Grant
c.uiu'd. cairy Lancaster county," it may
well be asked. " Will Senater Cameren
dare te insult the'50.000 voters of Lancas
ter county by persisting in his plan te es
tablish another era of Grantism, notwith
standing the fact that almost every voter
in the. county is opposed te a third term of
Grant and ail its attendant evils '.'
Of course, most of this is mere bosh, and
the very signature adopted shows that it
was intended te hoax the Sai. There is
plenty of anti-Grant sentiment here, but
Mylin, Brown and Cochran de net rcprc
cnt it, and hardly Smith.

The Comedian Arrested and liselinrged.
Last evening Harry Gallagher, editor of
the Oirl, had Billy Wylie, the Irish come
dian, of the "Syke"' combination, arrested
en a charge of assault and battery. As
we stated yesterday, Gallagher was
whipped by "Wylie at the Black Herse
hotel, because, as the latter alleged, he
sent a note te Mrs. Wylie, making an un
gentlemanly preposition te her. After
"Wylie's arrest, he was taken te Alderman
McConemy's office, where a crowd seen
gathered. "Wylie being a stranger in the
city, it was seen found that he was unable
te procure bail. The management of
"Syke" desitcd te leave town this morn
ing, and they could net de se without "Wylie
who with his wife, is a prominent member
of the troupe. After some talk with Gal
lager the aflair was compromised, the
suit was withdrawn by him, and the costs
were arranged. The ' Syke " troupe,
with "Wylie and his wife, left for Yerk this
morning.
Wylie, the assailant in this case, is a va
riety actor of some reputation. He is an
Irish comedian and has been en the stage
for several years, in which time he has
twice appeared in this city with di.'letcnt
troupes, and has performed at many of
the principal variety theatres of the coun
try. The Farmers' Mutual Insurance Company.
At the general meeting of the members
the Farmers' Mutual insurance company,
held en December 27, 1879, Hen. Jehn
Strohm, Reuben Gather, A. O. ZSTewpher,
David Miller and Rudelph W. Shenk were
elected directors, and Henry Cepcnhc.Ter,
Christian Herr, Pequea, Ames B. Shu
man, Emanuel P. Keller, Jehn Scachrist
and Abraham Buckwaltcr were elected
appraisers for 1SS0. The beard of direc
tors was organized by electing Hen. Jehn
Strohm, president; Rudelph W. Shenk,
treasurer, and A. O. Xewpher, secretary.

The Poultry Shew.
Although the weather is wet te-day and
the streets muddy, the attendance at the
poultry show in Lecher's building is as
large as ever. The judges have been busily
engaged all day in examining and weigh
ing the birds and making the awards, and
exhibitors are net slew in putting up the
cards announcing the premiums taken by
their exhibits. We will publish the olli elli
eial list of premiums as seen as it is com
plete. The exhibition will close te-morrow
evening.

Why They Want Their Wages Increased.
St. Leuis, Me., Jan. (5. Xcarly 1,000
coal miners of Illinois assembled in mass
meeting, near French Village, yesterday,
aud discussed their grievances. They say
that in consequence of the heavy increase
in the cost of blasting powder, miner's oil,
and of all articles of family consumption,
they must have higher wages. Xe definite
action was taken, but the regular delegate
meeting will be held at East St. Leuis to
day, at which it is probable a formal de'

operators, and if this demand is net com
plied with, the entire district will go en a

Freight Traill Falls Fifty Feet Without
Hurting Anybody The Cars take Fire.

train en the Leng Branch railroad ran
through the drawbridge ever the Kali way
river early this morning and fell fifty feet
into the river where the water was twenty
feet deep. Xe one but the engineer was
hurt, and his injuries are only slight. After
the accident the wreck took lire and six
cats were consumed. The drawbridge had
been unaccountably left open.

The approaching senatorial election in
Mississippi excites much interest and
speculation among Southern politicians in
Washington. Senater Lamar is actively
and heartily in favor of Gen. Walthall,'

senator when his own election occurred,
four years age. Senater Lamar and Gen.
Walthall tire law partners, and devoted
personal friends. 3Iissisippians are
fend of describing the enthusiasm of the
attachment of these gentlemen for each '
ether in the Senate. Walthall rep
resents the conservative clement of the
democracy et his state, lie is said
te be a geed political tactician, and will
probably be elected according te the best
information received. The fact, however,
that lie lives only thirty miles from Ox
ford, Senater Lamar's home, will be likelv
te bring upon him a het sectional tight
from ether parts of the state. Among
his prominent competitors arc Gen. J. Z.
Geerge, new of the supreme cenrt of
Mississippi, who resides at Jacksen. Gen.
Geenrc was a prominent candidate when
Mr. Lamar was chosen. He is an able
man, aud was largely instrumental in
rescuing his state from Radical control in
1873, being at that time chairman of the
state committee. Representative Single
ton is also a candidate, and has made an
exceedingly active canvass.
Quite as much inteiest is felt iu the ac
tion of Gov. Cobb, of Alabama. ren-ardin-
the appointment of a successor te the late
Senater Ilousten, as in the Mississippi
senatership. The Legislature will net
elect the new senator until Xevember,
and the executive appointee will thcrcfore
serve during the remainder of the pres
ent session. It is prebable that Gov.
Cobb will appoint Luke Prver. of
Athens, te the scat of the dead sen
ator. Mr. Pryer has never held elliee, and
is therefore unknown outside or Alabama,
where his reputation as a lawyer and citi
zen is of the highest rank, lie resides in
the same town where Senater Housten
lived, and was for inanv years his partner
iu the practice of law. His appointment
would satisfy the territorial demands
of Xerth Alabama and meet the re
quirements of the senatorial position upon
the score of ability and character. A
shrewd Al.i bama politician who has been
named among the prominent aspirants
says that Gov. Cobb would probably ap
point Mr. Pryer in the interest of his own
aspirations for re-election te the governor
ship. Gov. Cobb is anxious te be re-elected
and te appoint, either Gen. Walker, Gen.
Wheeler, Mr. Pugh, Mr. Bradford or Gcu.
Ferney, all of whom were named when
Gov. Housten was elected, and all of whom
will be aspirants when the election shall
occur iu Xevember, would be te give the
appointee iiudue advantage and te make
unhiendly te Gov. Cobb all the ether as
pirants. It is assumed in this calculation
of Mr. Pryer's appointment that he will be
satisfied with his I'cvr months' tenure of the
senatorial toga, and will net aspire te
further political honors. His appointment
would therefore give no offense te the lend
ing aspirants, te whom the field for the
senatership would still be left open.
Republicans Against Grant.
An independent Republican movement
for the purpose of del'eatiug Gen. Grant's
nomination has been started, and the de
tails of the movement and the names of the
gentlemen engaged therein will be made
public in a few days. The object of the new
organization is te centralize inone massall
of the Republican opposition te ('rant in
the country. Jehn Sherman is really at
the head of the movement, and he hopes
te be the chief beneficiary. The principal
idea at this time is te have it known
throughout the country that certain Re
publicans of preminencu will net support
Grant in the event of his nomination for a
third term. Se far, Geerge William Curtis
and ex-Senater Hendersen, of Missouri, are
the only ones who have made that an an
neuncment publicly. Mil rat Halstead, of
the Cincinnati Cummcrciul, Sherman's
organ, is enlisted iu the movement against
Grant. It is expected that Blaine's adher
ents will help iu the anti-Grant undertak
ing, and the Maine chieftain will endeavor
te diawte his support every anti-Grant
Republican that Sherman cannot capture.
Gen. Hendersen has been anil is active
in this movement as a friend of Sherman.
Attempt te Wreck a Train r Cars.
Buffalo, X. Y., Jan. 0. A dastardly
attempt was made te wreck the Falls
train en the Xew Yerk Central branch last
evening, between Xerth Buffalo and
Tonawanda, several rails having been
wedged between the tracks and a number

but lead te mischief. The Hen. Geerge
Lear, late attorney general el the state,
also condemns the early call, aud regards
the Grant boom as having reached its
