raisl's Expenses in Philadelphia.

Before the city of Philadelphia took any
elhcKil action respecting the reception of
lien, urant, the president el the common
council was informed that if the city would
receive Grant in itscorperatc capacity, two
or three of Grant's personal friends "would
pay the expenses attending that reception.
Upen that assurance, "the hospitalities of
the city of Philadelphia" wcie tendered te
Gen. Grant, and a reception upon a grand
scale planned by Mr. Geerge W. Childs
was given him.
After the city had undertaken te receive
Grant, it could net back down without dis
honor, because the ' two or three personal
friends of the general" failed te furnish
the money te pay for the reception. In
consequence, the city was forced te make
an appropriation of Sle,000 te pay for the
royal entertainment" given Grant, but
what is the most singular of all is, the city
has just paid out of its treasury the sum
of $100 for music at the residence of Mr.
Geerge "W. Childs en the evening of his
dinner te Gen. Grant. Secer Robeson,
Landaulet "Williams, Gen. Belknap, and a
few ethers, as the iollewiug true copy of a
bill attests :

and similar expenditures.
A Story Mcimncil the Mad Purpose.
There is a tale of a s.ca captain who, in
a distant corner of the Southern seas, vis
ited an undiscovered or unexplored group
of beautiful islands. After lauding and
trading with the gentle natives, he was
astonished by the visit of a white man,
evidently a person of means and conse
quence, who, after making himself very
agreeable, implored the captain te give
him a story book, if he had such a thing
in his possession. The captain had, and
deeply touched by the pigs and co ce co
ceanuts which the white exile had
given him, bestowed en him a copy of thu
"Arabian Nights' Entertainments."
Overcome by the present, the exile burst
into tears, and cried, ''Yeu have saved my
life and given me wealth." On explana
tion, he said, " I should long age have
been eaten, but while they they were fat
tening me learned enough of their lan
guage te tell a child the story of " Little
Red Riding Heed." The child repeated it
and the whole population were mad with
joy. They had never heard a story
before. Frem that day I became a great
and honored man. "When they had
a great national festival I sat
en the top of a hill, and thousands wept
(while some elderly relative was being
cooked for a feast) at the cruel death of
the grandmother as caused by the wicked
wolf. I had with me a volume of ' Fairy
Tales," and I seen began te set price en
my performance. "Red Riding Heed" is
rather worn ; I only get a hundred cocoa
nuts for her new, but "Cinderella" is
still geed for four pigs and a turtle, and
"Beauty and the Beast" brings six or
seven, according te the quality.
Beasts and Reptiles in India.
Times of India.
Seme very interesting statistics are pub
lished by government regarding the de
struction of wild -animals and venomous
snakes in British India, and of the number
of human beings and cattle killed by them.
The general results of the reports from
various local governments show that the
number of persons killed by wild animals
in 1877 was 2918, and in the following
year 3444 ; by venomous snakes, 10,777
and IG.81'2 in the same years, respectively.
Cattle killed by wild animals and snakes
in 1877 and 1878 numbered e3,197 and 48,
701 in each year. In 1877, 22,831 wild
animals were destroyed and in the follow
ing year 22,487 ; and of venomous snakes,
127,293 in the former and 117,939 in the
latter year. The amounts of rewards paid
for the destruction of wild beasts and poi
sonous snakes was in 1877, 100.017 rupees,
and in 1878, 99,189 rupees. The general
results, therefore, are that the number of
persons killed has increased, while the
number of cattle se killed, the num
ber of wild animals and snakes
destroyed, and the amount of rewards
paid show a decrease. The incieasc
in the number of persons killed
by wild animals is attributed te a great
extent te the deaths from wolves in the
.Northwestern provinces and Oudc, which
have increased from 380 in 1877 te G24 in
1878. The lieutenant governor has in
vited the attention of district officers te
the subject with a view of mere effective
measures being taken for the destruction
or these animals. With reference te
deaths from snake bites, the number of
persons thus killed has decreased from
10,846 in 1870 te 10,S12 in 1877, while the
number of cattle has decreased fiem 2,913
in 1877 te 1,823 in the year uudcr review.
The returns showing the number of
cattle killed arc, doubtless, as observed by
the chief commissioner of the central
provinces, less trustworthy than these of
persons. But his excellency the governor
general in council trusts that the reports
of the current year will show the extent
te which the suggestion that municipal
bodies should offer rewards for the destruc
tion of snakes in towns and large villages
has bcen acted upon and with what
results. This matter is one of importance,
and should net be lest sight of.
About Parrots.
All the Year Round.
A notable fact in relation te the pecu
liar feed giving a ilaver te the ilesh of an
imals, such as muddy weeds te that of lish,
iish te wild ducks, acorns te the llesh of
perk, and many ether instances, is most
lemjukable in the case of parrots. AVe
arc assured by these who living in Seuth
Africa, have frequently eaten of parrots,
that the delicacy of the llesh varies from a
luxury te positive rejection during certain
seasons of the year. When the delicious
guava is ripe they are sapid and fat ; the
seed of the acajeu imparts a slight and net
disagreeable soupceu of garlic ; spicy seeds
give net only the Ilaver but an aroma of
cinnamon, cloves, etc., and all berries
give a peculiar quality te their llesh.
They are moreover wine-bibbers. We had
a parrot which had contracted that habit
at the passcngeis' dinner-tables en beard
one of the Peninsular and Oriental steam
ers. He would watch the guests retire,
and go round 'heel-tap" every glass as
dry as any servant. The seed of the cot
ton tree is the parrot's especial weakness,
and will intoxicate him in the same man
ner as alcohol docs man. Dealers
are said te give parrots a like
stimulant previous te showing
them te a customer, as it has
the ell'cct of making them loquacious. In
opposition te a contrary notion, parrots
will and often have been known te breed
in captivity in dilferent parts of Eureiie.
They lay three or four white eggs each
time anti mcuoate several times in a year,
sitting from twenty te twenty-live days,
according te the season. The most success
ful results appear te have been attendaut
upon cases in which birds have been pro
vided with nesting places suitable te their
habits. In one case a small barrel was pro
cured and pierced toward a third of its
height with a hole about six inches in di
ameter. In the bottom was placed a quan
tity of sawdust three inches in thickness.
On this the female laid her eggs and sat
until they were hatched. Recent works
question the fact that parrots breed in
domestication, but there exist tee many
trustworthy evidences te the contrary te
allow the denial te obtain. Indeed, se
long age as lsj a writer upon the subject
said : "AH experiments which have been
tried at Caen and Paris in this interesting
subject have been attended with the most
favorable results."
Woedeoek Carrying Their Yeung.

It is new pretty well known that of the
woodcock which arrive in the British
islands in October a large number remain
each year te pair and nest in suitable local
ities and this being se, no doubt the follow
ing curious habit of the parent birds has
only te be called attention tee te be fully
correboiatcd : The late Mr. Lloyd, in his
"Scandinavian Adventures," wrote : " If
in sheeting you meet with a breed of
woodcocks and the young ones cannot fly,
the old bird takes them separately be
tween her feet and flics from the
dogs with a meaning cry ;" and Mr.
Halting, in the November number
of his journal, the zoologist, has been at
the trouble te collect all the records of se
strange a habit, from which record it
would appear that there is a dilference
among observers as te whether the young
birds tire carried in the claws of the parent
bird or pressed beeween her breast and
legs. One of the brothers Stuart, in the
second volume of the " Lays of the Deer
Ferest," in a very graphic account of the
troubles which the old woodcocks have
with their young ones, says that he saw a
woodcock rising with a young bird in her
feet, her long legs dangling and swinging
with her little burden, like a parachute,
lighted at no great distance, but
as he at once came upon her she
get up. In her hurry she dropped
the young bird. She came te the ground,
however, almost at the same time as the
young one ; running back she sat upon
him and rose again with him in her claws.
Mr. C. St. Jehn, in his "Natural History
and Spert in Meray," declares "that the
old woodcock carries her young, even
when larger than a .snipe, net in her
claws, which seem quite incapable of hold
ing up any weight, but by clasping the
little bird tightly between her thighs, and

apparently, it also sometimes occurs in our
