Tobacco.
The Market in New Yerk.
U. S. Tobacco Journal.
The year 1879 ended in perfect tranquil
lity. The new year opened equally as un
disturbed, and leaf dealers are new ready
te de some kind of business. This much
is certain ; that they will de very little
business during the first part of 1880.
They need net despair, however. The sec
ond half of the year will provide them with
plenty of geed tobacco which they will be
able te buy at low rates. Our Pennsylva
nia reports speak of gradually decreasing
figures for '79 tobacco. There are some
35,000 cases still in the hands of farmers.
This tobacco must be bought at 10 te 12
cents for wrappers and 8 and 5 cents for
binders and fillers. If higher prices are
paid, no money will be made. This is as
unreliable as the JeurnaVx previous re
ports. Eds. Int. We adhere te the .sen
timents expressed by us during the past
three months. Cigar manufacturers new
leek favorably upon '78 Ohie, and this to
bacco is preferred te '78 Pennsylvania.
The latter is firmly held at from 15 te 20
cents for running by New Yerk packers.
There is at the present writing no demand
for any kind of tobacco. The sales of the
week hardly number 300 cases, comprising
'78 Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Ohie.
The latter sells at 10 te 13J cents running.
Onus's Yearly ltcvicw.
Iii their annual review J. S. Gans's Sen
& Ce. say there are in F. C. Lincle &. Ce.'.s
inspection warehouses Jan. 1. 1880, l(i.lii)0
cases. There were exported from New
Yerk List year (55,719 lihds of leaf tobacco.
The December seed leaf business has been
geed ; total sales, 5,250 cases ; for expert,
400 cases. Of all kinds there were sold in
1879, 88,085 cases, of which 5,014 were for
expert : of the whole 14,900 was of Penn
sylvania '77 at.d 11,520 of Pennsylvania
'78. That last year's business was net a
geed one this e'ncu'jtr attributes te the
average peer quality of the ciep and
the lack of the expert trade. Nevertheless
'nearly all tobaccos excepting Pennsylva
nia have been taken out of first hands at a
profit, and even this article would new, te
a large extent, be in jobbers' and manu
facturers' possession had net, fortunately
for them, the packers in many instances
refused te accept small profits en tobacco,
which if line in quality is deficient in wrap
pers. The sleck of old tobacco en hand
Jan. 2, 1880, is put at 48,000 cases, divided
as fellows :
7,500 cases. 187s, New England, in
cluding a trifle of 1877; 21,000 cases, 1S78,
Pennsylvania : 0.500 cases, 1878, New
Yerk; 10,000 cases, 1S7, Ohie;
cases, 1878, Wisconsin.
The New Crep.
Pcardimr the outlook for the
ing year Messrs. Cans say: "This ci op
(the 1879) is a geed one, sounder and
leafier than the preceding, and much
larger; we estimate it at 175,000 cases,
consisting of :
35,000 cases New England, of which
nfn it . :.. -t i nmi ......... ITni.tlV.,'.!

county, and 13,000 cases Massachusetts,
including 5,000 cases " Havana seed ' the
bulk of which is Massachusetts ; en the
whole better than 1878, particularly the
seconds.
50,000 cases Pennsylvania, an excellent
crop, fine in texture, free of white veins,
large in growth, with sonic little house
burn.
15,000 cases New Yerk, of which 7,000
cases Flats and 8,000 cases Onondaga,
sound, of geed quality, thick in leaf, and
rather mixed.
30,000 cases Ohie (many estimates de
net exceed 25,000 cases), a seunder, but
hardly a better one than that of 1878.
30,000 cases Wisconsin, Illinois, &c,
(most estimates are from 22,000 te 28,000
cases), of which 0,000 cases "Havana
seed," containing some very fair tobacco,
but en the whole the leaf is net sound, and
the wrapper proportion will be less than
the 1878 crop.
Purchasing has been going en for some
time in all the states, the Eastern and
Western "Havana" has nearly all been
taken from producers ; in Pennsylvania it
is estimated that one half the crop has
been sold, and in New England buyers
have net been inactive.
Thus, with a stock of 223,000 cases, of
which 48,000 cases old crop te enter the
new year with, it should require great
moderation en the part of operators te
make a success of this year's business, but
se far all the investments made have been
at figures which surely anticipate, nay,
even discount,a very nourishing trade, and
while it is true that the area of civilization
tr linimr nAii. 4-e 1 T " x4 fl I fiw 1 11 4 lin AVncf
Northwest and Southwest, anil fertile lands,
heretofore uucultivatcd, are being brought
under cultivation, and made te add their
portion te the national wealth, still our
branch is a limited one, and without a
geed foreign demand, business cannot be
otherwise than stagnant.
The momentary outlook for an expert
trade is net encouraging ; in connection
with ether reasons we must state that
through the increased duty in Germany
the production of Palatinate and ether to
baccos have been stimulated, and this year
undoubtedly an enormous increase en pre
vious crops will be made.
The Brazil crop of 1878-79, which was a
geed one, had been largely imported at a
very early season, in anticipation of the in
creased duty, and although there is net
much in importer's hands, we have all
reason te believe that manufacturers and
even jobbers arc at present well supplied.
The St. Dominge crop of 1879, about
00,000 seroens, of which the first parcels
arrived in Bremen some two mouths since,
has been pronounced as being very geed ;
furthermore nothing in the shape of 1879
seed leaf has se far been bought at prices
low enough te induce the Germans te take
held.
Our English friends express a dcsiic te
use seed leaf, but unless we cau put up
light and dry strips in large quantities,
and at moderate figures, there is little tu
be hoped for from that quarter.
Before closing, allow us te say that re
marks made iu our circulars arc always
made in geed faith. Our interests are tee
closely allied with producers, packers,
manufacturers and exporters te wish te
injure any one, and we trust that the 1879
crop or rather that part of it yet in pro
ducers hands will be purchased at mere
moderate figures than these se far paid.
We are satisfied that, were our crop 250,
000 te 300,000 cases, instead of 175,000 (and
which will ere many years be the case), it
could be readily disposed of, aud at prices
which would pay growers. They must net
expect te become rich en each individual
crop, but they shall always receive a fair
remuneration for their labor.
Cuttings have been dealt in te a much
larger extent than heretofore, both for ex ex
eort and consumption, owing te the in
creasing demand throughout the world for
cheap cigars, and the absence of a suffici
ency of low priced-fillers. 0,015 cases were
exported, and prices have advanced fully
one cent.

Guilty or Wrong.
Sonic people liave a fashion of confusing ex

a wrong. There are some advertised remedies

chemist. His "C. & C." (Cough and Celd) Cordial is net the result of mere cliance, but of long
scientific research in chemistry and medicine, as is plainly seen by the rapidity of its action

that of any ether medicine upon the market, and yet it is sold at the exceedingly low price el
