LANCASTER DAILY INTELLIGENCER, MONDAY, JANUARY 5, 1880.
HOG KING v. BULL KING.
Parting Hie Political Raiment Apportion Appertion Apportien
lngjthe Patronage.
Fer a month past the small politicians
liavc been exercised aheut the distribution
of the spoils in the organisatien of the
prison and peer house hoards. It will lc
remembered that at the last primary elec
tion the Heg ring elected Ames Iluttcr and
Jehn Herting, prison inspectors who go
in te-day vice I. IF. Shaeffer and Jeseph
Samson, Hull ringers, who go out. This
makes the beard stand four Heg ringers
te two Hull ringers, and gives
the former complete control of
the patronage. In order te keep their
faction "solid' they have caiicusscd for
several weeks and have had gitat difficul
ty in satisfying the numerous claimants of
their faction. The clerkship has been
successively premised te Jehn Baker, Am
aziah C. Hair and Jerc Cooper, of Bart, but
finally a boss Heg ringer said it must be
('oeperanditwillbc. Fer the ether positions
there has been a lively scramble, the only
thing certain up te this morning having
been that there would be a clean sweep of
the present incumbents, but their succes
sion is certain net te be fixed without ex
citing some bad bleed among the Heg ring
aspirants. They say Dr. Compten might
h ive saved his hair if he had net stuck te
Jee Samson.
The new beard met and organized by
the election of Jehn II. filler, president,
Ames Hetter, sccietary, and .lac. AVelfl',
treasurer.
The offices of cigar boss and matron
were abolished, and the following reduc
tion of salaries took place : Clerk, from
$300 te $720 ; first and second undei keep
ers, from $!)00 and $720 te $0G0 each .
watchmen, from $G."i0 te $."70 ; shoe boss,
from $(J."iO te $520 ; baker, from $ 15." te
$100.
The he ml then adjourned until after
dinner.
After dinner the officers were elected as
fellows :
Clerk Jeremiah Cooper.
First lJndeikecer Net filled.
Second L'nderkecpcr Albert Murr.
Watchmen IJenj. Ilehrcr, W. Lampe

At the last election the Bull ring elected
Overheltzcr te the peer-house beard and
the Heg ring re-elected Shultz, which made
the be.ud stand 5 te'!, but as the Heg ring
had previously had control the tie was in
their favor and " no election "' is as geed
for them as a victory. There was no change
there, except the list of physicians, which
steed before as fellows : Drs. Filler, A. J.
llerr, Bolenius and Reland. Drs. Thes.
B. Cox and II. E. Muhlenberg were elected
instead of Drs. Heir and Heland.
I lie entire organization at the alms
house was as fellows :
President D. B. Landis.
Superintendent B. F. Cox.
Steward Jehn Breck.
Treasurer Geerge. Spin rier.
Solicitors Owen P. Bricker and Chas.
I. Landis : tie vote.

Baker Lewis Ivehlhnas.
Doi-teis J. A. Elder, It. M. Beleuiu--,
Themas B. Cox and II. E. Muhlenberg.
Meral Instructor Jehn Swenck.
The Politicians.
The organization of these beards brought
quite a number of politicians te town this
morning, and there was a geed ileal of
chaffing about the hotels and en Barbaiy
Coast. On the presidential question Bull
ringers were found generally for Grant,
and Heg ringers for Blaine. It seems te
be conceded that no primary election will
be called te cheese state or national dele
gates, and that the county committee will
select them in the Cameren interest.

Jehn P. Geed, county recorder elect, took
possession of his office this morning. He
retains as his clerk Mr. M. V. B. Iveller.
As deputy recorder he has appointed Ma.j.
C 1!. Fastnacht. vice A. C. Barr removed.
Mr. Geed and both his deputies were sol
diers of the Union during the late war.
Of Mr. A. C. Barr, the retiring deputy,
who was in the ofuce for the past seven
years, it must be said that he was an
obliging, courteous and efficient officer,
thoroughly posted in all the duties per
taining te the office.
The County Solicitor.
Hugh It. Fulton, esq., the county solicitor-elect,
entered upon the duties of his
office this morning, succeeding J. Hay
Brown, esq., whose term has expired.

Death t an Estimable Lady.
Iii our death column is receided the
death of Mrs. Catharine Kcyser, at the
advanced aged of 77 years. She was well
known in a large circle of friends, by

Although for a number of years before

paralysis, she bore her suffering with
that calmness and trust in her Maker
which characterized all her actions during
her life. Solemn high mass will be cele

will take place at St. Jeseph's cemetery.

Brandy as a Medicine.
The following article was voluntarily sent te

BRANDY AS A MEDICINE.
This new much abused Alcoholic stimulant
was never intended as a beverage, but te be
used as a medicine of great potency in the cure
et some of the destructive diseases which
sweep away their annual thotisaiulsef victims.
With a purely philanthropic motive we pre
sent te the favorable notice et invalids espe

nothing mere or less than

The aged, with tceble appetite and mere or

when used properly.

A Freject en Feet te Secure a General Or
ganization of the Graduates.
An effort is new making, and with fair
prospect of success, te establish jin "Al

tlit male high school in this city. A num
ber of young gentlemen have taken held
of the matter, and for .some weeks past
been energetically canvassing the
sentiment of graduates of the school and
have succeeded in arousing a lively inter
est, which encourages the belief tliat the
movement will result in a success
Several individual classes of the school
have perfected organizations, whose an
nual reunions have from time te time been
noted in our columns, and it is proposed te
secure the co-operation of as many grad
uates of the school as can be brought te
favor the idea, organize them into a body,
te be known as the " Alumni Club of the
Male High Scheel," rent a couple of
rooms, have them pleasantly furnished and
provided with books, newspapers and pe
riodicals, and ether means of entertain
ment and amusement, and the project
includes also the ultimate crcctieu of a
gymnasium, the general purpose heing te
provide a resort for mental and physical
improvement, social intercourse and the
cultivation of a fraternal spirit among the
graduates and a growing attachment te
and interest in the venerable institution
which the club will represent. As inti
mated a number of gentlemen, some of
them graduates of years' standing, have
expressed their sympathy with the
movement that has been inaugurated,
and the support and sanction of the
principal of the school, Prof. MeCaskcy,
has been obtained ; se that there seems te
xist no geed reason why the plan should
net succeed and a large and influential or
ganization result from the efforts new in
progress. A meeting will be held in the
high school building en Friday evening
next, te which all interested are invited,

Xew Yerk, Jan. 3. At an early Leur
this morning fire broke out in the building
known as '"Turner hall." It was known
that Mr. "Win. Winckle. the proprietor,
with his wife and employees, slept in the
buildinjr and before the heavy doers
could be broken open several of
them appeared at the upper windows,
imploring help. Even after the doers
had yielded the unfortunates could net
be reached, as the ilames swept up th
bread and only stairway. The firemen
went te the reef of the adjoining house,
hoping te release the impcuiled people
by means of the scuttle te the build
ing in which they were confined.
A hole had te be cut through the reef and
by this means only they were reached.
By this time four persons had been burned
or suffocated te death.
The origin of the lire is unknown. It
broke out in the basement and swept up
the bread stairway like a Hash of lightning.
During the night there had been a wed
ding celebration in the building, but the
guests had all departed by 2 a. m. Three
hours afterwards the lire broke out.
The scenes at the fire were heart-rending
in the extreme, and much excitement
prevails.

Londen, Jan. 5. The Times says: ' li
the eyes of the Afghan people Abdul
Khanian Khan, pretender te the throne of
Afghanistan, counts for little, but in
Turkistan, from Kalkli te IJadakshan, his
influence is considerable, lie could doubt
less collect considerable force there
and probably establish his autheri
ty temporarily in Afghan-Turkistan.
The first step has been taken in such
an enterprise by the success of his wife's
new relative, Mir Kaba, who has ousted
Shere Ali's nominee from Faizaaed, and is
new de facto ruler of Badakshan. It
is morally certain Abdul Khanian will join
with him. In this fact lies Abdul Kha-
man's importance and his value te Russia
depends en the same circumstance. Mere
than that, the man who can without
foreign aid firmly establish his power in any
portion of Afghanistan -s the one who
must be taken into serious account ;
for his iniluc-ncc must become consider
able in ether portions of the state.
He might ever aspire te play the part
of national champion and certainly with
Abdul Kahman in possession of Balkh,
and his close ally installed at Faizahed,
there would be little peace of mind for
any chief of Cabul even though he should
be under shadow of British protection'
