Pinafore's Successor.
Gilbert and Sullivan's New Opera The Fi
rates of Penzance.
The Fifth Avenue theatre, Xew Yerk,
en Tuesday night was crowded and laugh
ter rang there loud and long. The splen
did audience assembled te see " The Pi
rates of Penzance" witnessed a most bril
liant and complete success, notwithstand
ing the indications that its authors would
never produce anything se popular as their
"Pinafore" had been. The plot of the
piece and specimens of its composition are
given by the Herald as fellows : The Pi
rates of Penzance are a body of soft-hearted
marauders, whose headquarters are a
cave en the coast of Cornwall. As the cur
tain rises they arc discovered in the act of
celebrating the "cemiug of age" of their
only apprentice, young Frederic. Fred
eric, much touched by the kindly expres
siens of his comrades, is still mere affected
by the consideration that he cannot repay
them as they deserve. He explains that,
having that day attained his majority, he
is out of his indentures and he intends te
avail himself of his liberty and te quit
their band lerevcr. I lie 1'irate Iving in
quiies his reason for this singular deter
mination, and Until, a " piratical inaid-ef-all
work," explains that Frederic was ap
prenticed tin eugh a misunderstanding
arising out of the similarity of the words
"pirate " and "pilot." As his nur.se she
had received instructions from Frederic's
lather te apprentice him te a jnlet, and by
mistake she apprenticed him te a pirate.
Ficderic. whose exaggerated and mistaken
scu-c of duty is his most pi eminent char
acteristic, feels himself bound in honor
te work, heart and soul as a pi
rate, until his indentures shall ha'e
expited, when he proposes te atone for his
involuntary association with such pestilent
scoundrels by sweeping them from the
face of the earth. The.se indentuics are
within half an hour of their
decease at the commencement of
the piece. The Pirate King regrets
the decision at which Frederic has ar
rived, but cannot conscientiously blame
him. Kuth, Frederic's former nurse, who
has, it appears, "worked her middle-aged
way into his boyish heart," impleics him
te take her with him a suggestion which
is heartily endorsed by the pirates, as Kuth
is net popular with them. Frederic hesi
tates te take se decided a step, explaining
that although he loves Kuth dearly and be
lieves her te be a line woman, yet, as he has
seen no ether woman's face than hers for
sixteen years, it isjustpesssblcthathcmay
be mistaken. Kuth assures him that she
is really an attractive person, and
Ficderic is satisfied. Unfortunately,
however, for Kutlf s prospects, a bevy of
beautiful young ladies, some twenty in
number, among them the daughtcis of a
General Stanley, stroll te the pirates'
haunt with a view te a picnic, and Frede
ric has, for the first time in his life, an op
portunity of comparing Kuth's niatuie at
tractions with these of younger and pret
tier women. He furiously lepieaches
Kuth for the deception she has practiced
en him and Kuth leaves him broken-hearted
as the young ladies enter, climbing ever
the steep rocks by which the scene i en
closed. Fiedeiick, appichensivc le.st his
pirate's dress should alarm them, conceals
uunsell in the cave, but is eventually com
pelled te reveal himself, owing te the fact
that the young ladies, believing themselves
te be alone, propose te take oft their shoes
ami stockings and "paddle." The young
ladies arc much terrified te learn from his
own lips that he is a pirate, but are some
what reassured en learning that he is en
the point of giving up his profession, and
intends te lead a respectable life for the
future. Te that end he impleics their as
sistance :

The young ladies, however, arc net pre
pared te make such a sacrifice.
Alas! there's net one maiden here
Who seems te feel the moral beauty
Of making worldly inteie-t
Subordinate te sense et duty.
Frederic is in despair, when 3Iabel, the
youngest daughter of the twenty, comes
forward and declares that she is prepaicd
te devote herself te Frederic's lcformatien.
Frederic is overjoyed, and Mabel's sym
pathetic sisters, in order te give the young
couple an opportunity of arriving at a sat
isfactory understanding, determine te shut
their eyes en what is going en "and talk
about the weather." Accordingly they sit
at the back of the stage and commence an
animated discussion as te the prospect of
" warm July," while the levers indulge in
a love duet. Frederic and the young
ladies are en the point of departure when
they arc surprised by the re-entry of the
Pirate King and his followers, who seize
the young ladies, whom they propose te
marry there and then through the agency
of

Mabel, who warns the pirates of its prob
able consequences :

This announcement is followed by the
entrance of the major general, in the
full uniform of the rank, who introduces
himself in a patter song, in which he de
scribes himself as a possessed of every
accomplishment under the sun except

Having introduced himself, the major
general is horrified te hear that the pi
rates propose te marry his large family en
the spot. It suddenly occurs te him, how
ever, that one peculiarity of these soft
hearted pirates is that they make a rule of
never molesting an orphan. "They are
orphans themselves and knew what ft is."
Availing himself of this fact, he appeals
te them as an orphan te spaie him and his
daughters, and his appeal is successful.
The pirates are moved te tears en Icarnin"

These children whom you see
Are all that I can call my own.
And the Pirate King at once releases
them, explaining his motive for se dein
in the following lines :
Although wc live by strife,
We're always sorry te begin it ;
And what we ask is life
Without a touch of poetry in it
At the mention of poetry the pirates and
the ladies are moved te kneel and sing the
following hymn te her:
nail. Poetry ! thou heaven-born maid.
Theu eiidest e'en the pirate's trade ;
Hail, flowing fount of sentiment !
All hall, Divine Emollient !
The young ladies are at once released,
and they, with Frederic and ther father,
scale the rocks by which they descended,
waving an adieu te the pirates, who in
dulge in a wild dance et exultation at tne
triumph of their guiding principle, as the
curtain falls en the first act.
The second act takes place in a ruined
chapel en General Stanley's estate. The
general is discovered in a state of terrible
depression, owing te remorse caused by the
contemptible lie by which he escaped from
the pirate's clutches. His daughters en
deavor, but vainly, te console him, and he
has come te kneel at the tombs of his an
cestors and implore ther pardon for the
disgrace he has brought upon a hitherto
unstained escutcheon. It is little te the
purpose that he is reminded of the fact
that he only bought the property a year
age, and that the stucco en his newly
erected baronial castle is scarcely dry.
His reply is unanswerable :
"Frederic, in this chapel are ancestors
you cannot deny that. I don't knew
whose ancestors they were, but I knew
whose ancestors thev are. and as their de
scendant "by purchase" (if I may se de
scribe myself) I shudder te think of the
disgrace that I have brought upon them."
Yeung Frederic, the ex-pirate, who is
by this time formally betrothed te M-ibel,
and who has obtained a commission in the
Eleventh Hussars, is that night te lead a
body of policemen against his former as
sociates, and the police enter te receive the
general's blessing before departing en their
hazardous expedition.
The frame of mind in which they em
bark en this duty is revealed in a song by
the Sergeant of Police, which is chorused
by the rank and lilc, who use their clubs
as trumpets :
When the fecman bares his steel.
All trumpeting Tarantara, tarantura!
We uncomfortable feel ;
All Tarantara !
And we find the wisest thing,
All Turantiira, tarantara!
Is te slap our cheats and sing

There is nothing brings it round

Like the trumpet's martial sound,
All Tarantara!
The7 receive the General's blessing
(which does net seem te have the efi'ect of
raising their spirits, inasmuch as it is con
lined te a recommendation te " go te death
and go te slaughter") and withdraw,
Mabel taking a fend farewell of Frcdciic,
who is left alone te prepare himself
for the coming struggle. Te his as
tonishment Kuth and the Pirate King
appear at the window at the back of
the stage, and, holding pistols te his head,
impleie him net te slaughter them until
he has heard what they have come te tell.
Under the circumstances he is scarcely a
free agent, and they proceed te tell him
that after his departure they discovered
that he was apprenticed te their band, and
until he reached his twenty-first year, as
they had imagined, but until he reached
his twenty-first birthday a mere material
distinction than might at first sight be sup
posed, inasmuch as he was born en the 29th
of February, in leap year, and that birth
day will net be reached until A. D. lSMO.
Ficderic is horrified at this discovery, and
he has little difficulty in cemiug te the con
clusion that until that date he is bound te
devote himself te the interests of the
pirates. Overwhelmed as he is at this dis-
cevcry,and notwithstanding his attachment
te General Stanley, he nevertheless feels
bound as a member of the gang, te
reveal the fact that General Stanley es
caped from them en a fradulcnt plea, inas
much as he net only is net an orphan,
but, worse than that, he never was one.
Furious at having been made the victim
of a deception, the Pirate King and Kuth
depart te collect their band and attack Tre Tre
nierdcn Castle that very night. Frederic
takes a fend farewell of Mabel, premising
te return in 11)40 and claim her, and then
fellows his old associates. Mabel sum
mons the police, informs them of the fact
that Frederic has felt himself bound te
rejoin his old associates, and urges them
te attack the pirates alone. This they de
termine te de, notwithstanding the fact
that they sympathize rather with the
criminals than with prosecutors, en
grounds explained by the Sergeant in a
song, of which the following is the second
verse :
Serg. When the enterprising burglar's net a
burgling
All net a burgling;
Serg. When the cutthroat isn't occupied in
crime
All pied in crime,
Serg. He loves te hear the little brook a gurgling-All
brook a gurgling,
Serg. And listen te the merry village
chime
All village chime.
Serg. When the cester's finished jumping en

All en his mother,
Serg. He loves te lie a basking in thu sun
All in the sun ;
Serg. Ah, take one consideration with an
other All with another,
serg. The policeman's let is net a happy
one
All happy one !
At this point the pirates arrive, and the
police conceal themselves in the left aisle
of the chapel. The pirates, whose tenden
cy te indulge in vigorous choruses is net
even checked by the fact that they are
committing a burglary, describe the cat
like way iu which they steal upon their
fee in a vocal explosion which is almost
calculated te wake General Stanley's "an "an
cester by purchase." In ell'ect it attracts
the General's attention, who enters under
the impression that he " heard the noise."
By this time the pirates have concealed
themselves in the right aisle of the chapel
and as the General sees nothing te account
for the sound that arrests his attention, he
concludes that it must have been the "sigh
ing of the breeze." He at once sings an
ode te the evening breeze, the pirates
arc suppesed te be unaware of the presence
of the police, and the General is supposed
te be unaware of the presence of either,
but this consideration does net prevent all
parties from joining in the chorus when
ever an antiphonal effect is rcquircd
Eventually the pirates declare themselves
and seize the General, whom they propose
te put te death en the spot. This calamity
is averted by the police, who, having
screwed their courage te the requisite
pitch by repeated "nips" of "Tarantara,"
rush en the pirates, who after a brief
struggle, conquer the police. The con
dition of the police seems hope
less, but the Sergeant is net without re
source :
Serg. Te gain a brief advantage you've con
trived. But your proud triumph will net be
long-lived !
King Don't say you're orphans, ler we know knew
that game.
Serg. On your allegiance we've a stronger
claim.

This is an appeal that no Englishman,
net even a pirate, can resist. The King and
his crew at ence surrender.

This announcement has an electric effect
en the General and the police, who at once
kneel in homage at the feet of their late
fees.

their marriage with his daughters.
Compared with "Pinafore."
The Tribune says : The first question
about the new operetta by Messrs. Sullivan
and Gilbert will be hew it compares with
" Pinafore." Of course every work ought
te stand or fall en its own merits, but com
parison in this case is unavoidable. It can
hardly be doubted that any play present
ed as a successor te the clever piece which
had such an extraordinary popularity last
season must be seen at a disadvantage.
Sir Jeseph Perter, Bid: Dentleye, Cemin
Hebe, Captain Corcoran, Little Buttercup,
the JKthhijHnitc, the Beatsicain, are tee
firmly established in the public affection
te be easily dislodged, and if the new set
of characters were really better than the
old wc should still regret the famil
iar laventes : we should miss the lekes
at which we have laughed se many
many times, and feel that nothing could be
se funny as "Xe, never," or "His sisters,
and his cousins, and his aunts," or " He
is an Englishman,'" Somebody asked an
old manager whether " The Pirates of
Penzance" premised te run as well as
"Pinafore." The veteran sadly shook his
head and replied, " We shall never have an
other 'Pinafore.' " His melancholy pre
diction was rash ; but iu the nature of
thiugs a phenomenal success like that of
last year cannot be immediately repeated
by another work of the same class. If
Jeffersen should play a new part nobody
would find it as geed as Hip Van Winkle,
though it were ever se much better.
We may touch lightly upon a few points
of difference between the two operettas
which seem te provoke legitimate compar
ison. The fun of "Pinafore"' was se clear
aud simple, both in the text and the
music, that it lerceti itsell at ence upon
the most careless listener. The humor of
the " Pirates" is richer, but mere recon
dite. It demands a closer attention te the
words than the ordinary playgoer will al
ways give ; perhaps it requires a mere dis
tinct enunciation than singers usually
think it worth while te cultivate. On the
the ether hand, there are great stores of
wit aud drollery in the dialogue and the
songs which will well repay exploration, se
that the opera ought te gain greatly upon
the favor of the public after two or three re
presentations. The music is fresh, bright,
elegant and merry, and much of it belongs
te a higher order of art than the most
popular of the tunes of "Pinafore."
There are little gems of melody; and
there aie dues and concerted numbers of
the most delicate device and the most
careful construction of which Mr. Sulli
van has a geed right te be proud.
Whether the principal airs are destined te
be strummed in all our parlors and
whistled in our streets, remains te be seen.
They will last longer if they escape such
flattering hard usage. Add te the spark
ling text, the excellent music, the droll
situations and an unusal abundance of
laughable "business," the further charm
of a series of stajje pictures in which
beautiful scenery and the glow of light
and color are deftly used te heighten the
efi'ect of very pretty groups, aud we have
a "catalogue of attractions te which the
public cannot remain insensible.
