To the Honorable (he Judges of the Court of Quar ter Sessions of Lancaster County: The undersigned, Inspectors of the Lancaster County Prison, in pursuance of law, submit to the Court the following report of the Prison for the year ending November 30th, 1869: On the 30th of November, 1868, there were in confinement 93 prisoners ; during the year there were receiired 1809, making an aggregate of the inmates of the Prison in 1869 of 1902 Of these the following were discharged during the year, viz : By expiration of sentence and by Inspectors . 1549 By Magistrates, Court, Habeas Cor pus, tic Remaining in Prison, November 3011 i, 1569 217 01 these (217) 59 are convicts, 9 awaiting trial, and 149 vagrants. Of the 19u9 received daring the year, ¶l7 W 4 1 . 1' convicted—being an increase "t - 31 as compared with last year. The ratio of convictions us compared with that year, was 97 in 1909 commituieins, to 62 in 1114 the year be fore The number committed to. Prison during the year, excepting those convicted, was 1712, Wu More titan the previous year, of which 1562 were for vagrancy, drunkenness, and disorderlycon duct resulting from drunkenness. This is 661 more than the previous year. in addition to the 1712, there were sentenced during the same period 97, and remaining in Prison on the 30th of November, 1968, 93—mak ing the above total in Prison during the year. Of the prisoners discharged, 1 was sent to the Eastern Penitentiary, 1 to tae House of Refuge, 3to the County Hospital, 1 pardoned by , the tiovernor, 1 vagrant at work on outside 0( Pris on, escaped, anti cp nvicts escaped. Of the 97 sentenced prisoners, 53 were convict ed of larci-ny ' 7 of assault and battery, 6 of tor 3lication and bastardy, 1 of forgery, b of surety of the peace, 7 of costs, 3 of burglary, 3 of deser tion or htmily, 2 of felonious assault, 1 of adul tery, 1 of fraud, 2 of assault with intent to rav ish, 1 of false pretense, 1 of malicious mischief, I of rape, 1 of cormterteiting, and 2 of robbery. Of the 97 convicts, 2 were sentenced• for ten years, 4 for six years, 4 for five years, and 4 for four years ; were white, and 13 were colored; were males, and six females. But 44 of the convicts Were born in Lancaster city and coun ty, 16 in Germany, 8 in Ireland, 5 in Massachu setts, and 5 in Philadelphia; 15 of the convicts were under the age at thirty years; 13 are old offenders and to are receiving punishment for the first, offence ; and of the 91 males but 37 had trades prior to their conviction. The 97 convicts were occupied as follows : 7 weaving carpets, 1 weaving, bagging, 10 basket making, 5 cigar making, 6 shoe making, 6 knit ting nets, and 0 making garments, &c. ; 14 of the 97 could not read, and 25 could not write ; 30 of the 97 had never been married, 1 is a widow, are widowers ; 79 are of intemperate habits— a greater proportion than in the preceding year. The whole number ofprisoners, since the opening of the Prison, September 12th, 1551, to :November 30th, 1869,, was 12,4 n—whit males, 9,718; white females, 1,522 ; colored males, 922, and colored females, 321. The health of the prisoners during the year has been remarkably good. 'the whole number of cases treated was 234, of which 216 were cur ed, and IS relieved. The inside cell doors, which were replaced last year, added also to the unusual expense, not having been paid until the present year. The whole uninber of days prisoners were boarded the Wit jeer walk 441,108 18,193 at 80 cents a day; i 5 at 75 oen ts a day; 22,05 at 28 cents a day, and 5 518 at 25 cents a day, amounting in all to 018,121 70, an average of $1,098 47% per month. 'The number the previous year was 35,805 days, costing *80,260 11S, and averaging 0880.01 U per month, being an increase the past over the preceding year of *BlB 46% per month average. There were manufactured goods on hand to the amount of 85,1411.82, consisting among other articles of 2,987 yards carpet for sale, 746 bask ets of varklus siueg, 962 dozengrain bags, 588 flak and fly-nets, and I,MO yards begging.
