    The Lancaster City and County Horticul
tural Society netted the sum of $16.90 from
its recent Fruit Exhibitions in this city.
Abraham Hoop, proprietor of the Octoraro
Hotel, at Andrews' bridge, Colerain town
.;hip, recently killed a calf seven weeks and
wo days old, which weighed when dresvd
•ieo hundred and eighty pounds!
On Thursday of last week, Dr. Hartman's
hail surrendered him into the custody of De
puty U. B. Marshal Bain; this has the effect
of preventing the authorities of Indiana from
raking him to that State to answer charges
of fraud to the extent of $30,000, in connec
tion with the sale of his patent bridle there a
year or two ago.
A 8011 of William Ressler, of Uppet Lea
cock twp., aged about four years, was so
severely burned a few days ago, as to cause
his death. He playfully ignited a piece of
paper, and the fire was comuniploated to his
clothing.
Mrs. Rowe, mother of ex-Sheriff Benj. F.
ltowe, died suddenly of heart disease, a few
days ago, at the residence of Mr. John Win
ters, near Smithville '
Providence township,
whither she had went to attend the funeral of
Mrs. Anna Treager. Her health has not been
good for some time.
Messrs. Keever & Moser have sold out
their interest in the Keystone Book Store, in
Columbia, to Messrs. May & Erwin.
The two-story brick dwelling house and lot
of ground on Duke street, belonging to A. E.
Carpenter, Esq., was sold at public sale, on
Wednesday evening, to James B. Frey, for

public schools in this city, for the month of
October,
was 2,771; the average attendance
was 2,311.
Mr. Andrew Brubaker, of East HempUeld
twp., left at the Express office, on Saturday, a
monster beet—measuring 201, inches in cir
cumference, and weighing 14 pounds 3 ounces.
None of the School Directors elected at the
ast (October) election call take their seats
before the time fixed by law for the reorgani
zation of Boards, viz : the first Monday of
June, 1870.
A graded school has just been erected in
Manheim, at a cost of $12,000. It is two
stories in height, has been supplied with
Uhliuger's furniture thro'out, and the play
ground attached is a full acre in extent. Beats

this county, has a turkey‘hat has laid during

An inventory of Hartman's " exttlnsive"
Bitters establishment reveals the fact that
the whole thing is covered by $4,600. Verily
we live in an age of "humbug."
B. Reynolds, of Philadelphia, has been ap
pointed Freight Agent of the Pennsylvania
Railroad, in this city, vice A. F. Slaymaker.
Superintendent Wickersham has demand
ed that the County Commissioners of each
county in the State furnish an office at the
County Seat for the accommodation of the
County Superintendent of Public Schools.
On Tuesday evening of last week a serious
accident happened to Jacob E. Kreybill, eeq.,
of East Donegal township. Mr. Kreybill was
driving in a buggy in the vicinity of Sporting
Hill, leading a young mare. The strap by
which he held the animal had a sharp hook at
the end, which she, in pulling, drew into his
hand, inflicting a very ugly and dangerous
wound, the point of the hook passing entirely
through the hand.
The annual meeting of the teachers of Lan
caster city and county commenced at Fulton
Hall on Monday. The attendance was large
and the proceedings thus far have been of the
most interesting character.
A law was passed by the last legislature,
:aging a tax of one dollar on each dog in Lan
county, the proceeds of which to be devoted
to the support of the Gliildrens' Home, in this
My. The assessors of the city and county
are now making the assessment.
Constable Baker, of this city, arrested a
man calling himself John Mowery, on Tues
•lay last, on suspicion of I:timing stole& 'iv bey
mare which he offered for sale, supposed to
be the property of Geo. W. Tice, of Lebanon
county. He was committed.

was entered by burglars, and a number of

Skiles, in the same neighborhood, was enter
ed and robbed of a lot of clothing, &c.
The residence of Mr. C. T. Nourse, in Co
lumbia, was also visited by burglars, on Mon
day night, and about $l5O stolen. The money
had been collected by Mrs. N. for a charitable
purpose. Mr. N. heard the burglars at work,
and going to the bead of the stairway, hear
ing the men walking in the entry, he fired
three shots from a revolver, in the dark. It
Is not known whether any of the shots took
effect. The burglars made a hasty retreat.
The same night, the confectionary of G. G.
Smith was visited, but the rascals were driven
away before they secured any booty.
A CABE of Deafness of 14 years standing
( the result of Catarrh) cured by the use of

0., writes, under date of January 6,1869, that

very dull this week, and prices favor buyers.
About 3,000 head arrived, and sold at 8%46e.
for extra Pennsylvania and estern steers;

and 446 e. 18 L. gross for common, according to
quality. The market closed very dull.

Pfosident, and Honorable ALEXANDER L.
HA Y ES, and JOHN J. LIBHART, Associate
Judges of the Court of Common Pleas in and
for the County of Lancaster, and Assistant
Justices of the Courts of Oyer and Terminer
and General Jail Delivery and Quarter Sessions
of the Peace, in and for the County of Lancaster,
have issued their Precept to me directed, re
quiring me, among other things, to make pub
lic Proclamation throughout my bailiwick, that
a Court of Oyer and Terminer, and ageneral
Jail Delivery, also a Court of general Quarter
Sessions of the Peace and Jan Delivery, will
commence in the Court House in the City of
Lancaster, In the Commonwealth of Pennsyl
vania, on the THIRD MONDAY in NOVEMBER,
(the 15th,) 1169. In pursuance of which precept
public tiodoe is hereby given to the Mayor and
Aldermen of the City of Lancaster, In the said
county, and all the Justices of the Peace, the
Coroner and Constables, of the said city and
county of Lantlaster, that they be then and
there in their own proper persons, With their
rolls, records and examinations, and inquisi
tions, and their other remembrances, to do
those things which to their offices appertain
in their behalf to be done; and also all those
who will prosecute against the prisoners who
are, or then shall be in the Jail of said county
of Lancaster, are to be then and there to prose
cute against them as shall be lust.
