ROBBERS AT PACKER'S RESIDENCE
Asa Packer's Philadelphia residence,
(the Merchant's Hotel) must be rather a
hard kind of a place. On last Friday,
Mr. F. W. Lauer, of Reading, visited said
" residence,” and while there had his
money and a gold wateh stolen! Packer
wasn't at home, therefore, he isn't sus
pected. But, several of his democratic
friends have been arrested on suspicion.

does Asa Packer live? Does he pay any
taxes? If so, where? How much? To
whom? When? Also, does Asa Packer
live anywhere? In presenting him as the

in supposing that he lives at all? And is
it really the Valley of the Shadow of
Death of which he is the impalpable pride?

of the Somerset Whig, for the position.
This is an excellent nomination. Mr.
Scull is a true and well-tried Republican,
a gentleman of ability, and will represent
the district faithfully and honestly. That
he will be triumphantly elected, as he
ought to be, we have no doubt,

Thus far all efforts, except one, to buy
Republican support with Asa Packer's
greenbacks have failed. Republicans are
not for sale. The exception referred to is
a one-horse newspaper in Reading, known
as the Dispatch, which came to the sup
port of Asa in the shape of a communica
tion the other day, for which the editor
says he is not responsible. But, as the
character of the paper is known, and the
means employed to secure its support for
the Cops understood, the investment will
prove a very profitless one. The Repub
licans of Berks county are a unit for
Geary, Williams and the whole ticket, and
they will give a good account of them
selves on Tuesday next.
REPUBLICANS, REMEMBER I
If Governor Geary is defeated it will be
through your own apathy! We have a
clear majority of the legal voters in Penn
sylvania, and if every man does his duty,
we are certain of success. Republicans of
Lancaster, see that you do your part in
thin great struggle! If the democracy
succeed this fall let it never be said that
Lancaster was responsible for it. See that
every Republican is brought to the polls.
We ought to give a majority of seven thou
sand this fall, and we will do it, if the

is located there ; his place of business is
there ; his Railroad office is there ; he is

SKIES BRIGHT.
As the election approaches the pros
pects of the Democracy grow more gloomy.
The spark of enthusiasm which was visi
ble when Packer was nominated has been
completely extinguished. It is said Packer
himself has lost all faith in the promisee
of his party, and refuses to contribute his
money at the bidding of the cormorant,
who pester him on all sides. In Blair
county the Democrats are so disorganized
that they have placed no county ticket in
nom 11 at iOH and all along the Juniata
Valley the same hopelessness character
izes the opponents of Governor Geary. In
Alleghany the defeat of General Cass and
the nomination of Judge Williams has
had a depressing effect on the Democrats,
one of their principal leaders declining to
take any part in the canvass. In the coal
region where Packer is known, he is very
unpopular with the miners, and will not
command the usual party vote. On all
sides the skies arc gloomy and lowering
for the opponents of Republicanism, while
from every point the Republican sentinels

EVERY TAX-PAYER
Should remember that Asa Packer, the
Democratic candidate for Governor,though
a man of immense wealth, has used every
artifice and trick of which he was master,
to avoid paying his share of the public
burdens. Is such a man fit to govern a
commonwealth of honest and intelligent
freemen?
TOTER DO NOT FORGET
That ASA PACKER hasn't a loyal bone
in his body.
That Asa Packer does not pay State
taxes, and thereby denies that he is a citi
zen of Pennsylvania.
That he is head and soul of the Lehigh
Valley Railroad, a giant corporation run
in the interests of New York and antago
nistic to the interests of our State.
That the monopoly charges the enor
mous freight of nearly 4 cents a mile on
a ton of coal, while the Pennsylvania Cen
tral charges only 8 mills. Hence the high
price of coal.
That Packer's election would gratify
Lee, Beauregard and Jeff. Davis, and
dishearten Grant, Sherman and Sheridan.
That Packer's election is hopefully
looked for by every unrepentant rebel,
and would be deplored by every Union
man in the country.
That the railroad men of New York
(who ought to mind their own business,)
are pouring money into Pennsylvania to
secure Packer's election, for what?—for
Pennsylvania's interest, do you think?
Not a whit of it.
That the railroad corporations and aoal
monopolies earnestly look for his election,
in order to have the Executive influence
in the approval of acts thitt shall make
their operations still more intolerant and
oppressive.
That Packer's nomination was bought
with money, and not made upon merit,
private worth, or upon any public record
of his.
That Packer deems it necessary, in the
furtherance of his prospects, to spend hun
dreds of thousands of dollars for the pur
pose of buying bis election.
That to raise money for this object, he
became one of a powerful agency to raise
the tolls on coal, thus indirectly making
the poor men of Pennsylvania contribute
to the electioneering fund of their oppres
sor.
Voters of Pennsylvania remember these
facts, and vote for Gen. Joux W. GEARY.
A COPPERHEAD HIIHBUO.
We learn that some of the cops in Manor
township have just started, or rather at
tempted to start, a story that the Republi
cans are about to pass a law compelling
the people to furnish free boarding to all
the teachers in our public schools. But,
as the people of Manor township aro not
of the kind to be reached in that way, the
story is entirely harmless. Nobody out
side of Berks county is stupid enough to
believe it.

If you know a Republican voter who is
not registered, take him before a Justice
of the Peace and have the necessary affi
davits made. Blanks have been furnished
the County Commissioners, from whom
they can be obtained. Attend to this be
fore election day, and thus save trouble
and contusion at the polls.

raised the price on transportation fifty

There is good reason to hope and believe
that the Republicans will carry even Bucks
County, not only for Geary and Williams,
but also for the county ticket. Beans,
one of the chief corruptionists and Past
ing and Folding swindlers, during the last
session, is on the copperhead ticket for re
election, to the intense disgust of hun
dreds of honest democrats.

tion wasn't true, but said he didn't mean

the support of the Christian or Sanitary
Commission ; that he gave neither money
nor other encouragement to the govern
ment during the great struggle for the life

best possible manner, the convicted traitor
Vallandigbam ; that for the purpose of
escaping the payment of his just share of
local bounty tax, he had himself assessed
in Philadelphia, where he claims a resi
dence, only for the purpose of getting
clear of his tax on personal property !

small-pox among the people of the North,

THE PEOPLE MOTING.
eal•On Thursday last the Republican
citizens of Lancaster, were treated to
stirring addresses from Major A. R. Cal l
boon and Capt. A. N. Norris, of Philadel
phia, on the issues involved in the, present
campaign. The Court House was tilled
to its utmost, and the enthusiasm was un
bounded. On Monday everting at the
Court House, this city, a crowded house
greeted the Hon. Wm. D. Kelly, of Phila
delphia, who expounded the doctrines or
the Republican party, and the fellacies of
the copperheads, to the satisfaction of all
present.
In. New Holland, on Friday last, a large
and spirited meeting of Republicans was
held, at which Governor Geary, Hen. E.
Billingfelt, Col. J. P. Wickersham and
others made stirring and efibctive ad
dresses. A number of meetings were held
in other parts of the county, which our
limited space forbids us noticing. The
" Old Guard" is fully aroused, and de
termined to do her whole duty on Tues
day next.
PACKER ON RECONSTRUCTION.
In 1861 Asa Packer publicly declared in
favor of Pennsylvania, New Jersey and
New York joining the Southern Confed
eracy. That, he contended, would have
been the true way to reconstruct the gov
ernment—an unconditional surrender to
Jeff Davis !
PHILADIMPULt.
Our friends in Philadelphia are confi
dent of three to six thousand majority for
the Republican ticket. The operations of
the Registry Law clearly indicate such a
result. The falling off in the Fourth
Ward, according to the list, compared
with last year is very considerable. With
a fair election in every ward Geary's ma
jority will reach eight thousand.

THE CITY ELECTION
The only way to get rid of old Sander
son and his hangers on about the of is
to elect Atlee next Tuesday. Ile is a live
man, and will make an excellent and
faithful Mayor. Under his administra
tion the city revenues will be honestly ac
counted for. Many thousands of dollars
have already been saved by Capt. Rick
seeker, the present efficient Republican
City Treasurer, and a change in the
Mayor's office will save thousands more.

But a few days intervene between this
and election day. Republicans, are you
thoroughly organized? Is every block in
your election district carefully canvassed?

For shameless and abandoned destitu
tion of moral and political principle the
miscalled Democratic party takes the pre
mium. In view of recent facts, we marvel
how any decent white man can willingly
acknowledge his adhesion to an organiza
tion that is infamous beyond the use of
language. If there is a graceless villain
in the land who is not a Democrat, he
mnst be a fool, who don't know which
side of his bread is buttered. From the

presumption that seems incompatible with
sanity. But where there is no principle
there can be no harmony. Look at an
other recent case. The Democratic party
of the city of Philadelphia, in convention
assembled recently, nominated a muni
cipal ticket. ' An indicated thief was
nominated for oue of the most responsible
offices. Thieves, as usual, ruled the con
vention. Perjurers dictated the ticket of
a party. Branded villains of every grade
of moral turpitude ruled the political con
vention of the second city in the Union.
So palpable was this fact s and so apparent
its effect upon public sentiment that the
more cunning and intellectual knaves who
manage the party saw certain defeat in
anticipation,
and took it upon themselves
to annul the nominationsl Without dele
gated authority they have put an entire
new ticket in the field by a simple despotic
exercise of assumed authority. • And all
this is •`Democraticl l, And the leather
headed jackasses who compose the bulk of
that party will endorse the proceedings.
Devil or saint, so as he is on the "ticket,"
it is all right. But we have no patience

ITEMS : Lieut. T. M. Fisher, of the 23d U.
S. Infantry, and son of Gen. J. W. Fisher of
this city, who has been spending several
weeks at home on furlough, started from the
Carlisle Barracks on Wednesday of last week,
with a detachment of troops for the Pacific
coast. His regiment is stationed in that sec
tion of the country.
On Sunday a week two chickens wore taken
from the coop of Eman'l Rittenhouse of this
city. More had been secured, but the thieves
being disturbed in their operations released
all but two. Farmers especially should be
on the look-out for these rascals.
On Saturday night, the 25th , - .la,cob and
John Weitzel, of this city, cast four set-nets
in the Conestoga near the first lock. After
remaining in the water two nights they were
lifted, when they found they had secured 284.: - ,
fish. They retained the largest and best, and
threw in the water the balance. Quite a pro
lific haul, we should say.
The Lutheran Church, recently erected in
the borough of Ephrata, will be dedicated on
Sunday next. _

Mr. Geo. Dunkle, recently a soldier of the
war of 1812, diedlat his residence near Bethes
da, Martic-twp., this county, at the ripe old
age of 78 years.
A very fatal disease has been manifesting
itself among the poultry iu the county, and it
is not confined to any localities. A cotempo
rary states that in riding between this city
and Petersburg, a gentlemen "counted no
less than twenty-one chickens either dead or
dying in the road, while in a single yard he
saw seven in the same condition." Persons
purchasing cleaned poultry should be careful
from whom they buy.
Mr. F. S. Metz, of Columbia, is making
arrangements for the erection of a first-class
cotton mid at the Columbia dam.
The ladies of the German Lutheran Church
of Columbia propose holding a fair in the Odd
Fellows' Hall, commenving Monday evening
next, to raise funds to lb!nidate the debt rest
ing on the church.
Mr. John Weyci, of this city, Las grown
on his premises an immense cabbage head
which weighs about :to; pounds. Et is deci
dedly the largest cabbage head we have seen.
Mr. W, thinks of exhibiting it at the County
Fair this week. It is of the " Mitch Drum
Head Variety,"
On the morning of the 24th ult. two men en
tered the dwelling house of Adam F. Bair,
about a mile southeast of Landisville, in
East Hempfield-twp., and stole a silver watch,
gold breast pin, gold linger ring, and several
shirts. The thieves entered the house through
a garret window and made their exit by a
window in the second story. The family
were absent at the time of the robbery.

Constable Ruby, of Marietta, on Monday a
week, caught two very curious animals on an
outline in the Susquehanna. The largest one
is nearly two feet in length, about four
inches in width, has four feet, which are
about three inches in length, and has a head
which bears a very strong resemblance to
that of a cat-fish. Its tail, which is about
one-third the length of the body, is very fiat.

The cops attempted to "get up" a meeting
at Fulton Hall, in this city, on Saturday
evening last. The " unwashed" were there

Gov. Geary, the Republican party and the
"nigger." But little enthusiasm was mani
fested.
The First Annual Fair of the Lancaster
Park Association, commenced on Tuesday
last. The freshet of Monday caused consid
erable delay by preventing the bringing in
and arranging of the articles for exhibition.
The fair will doubtless get under way to-day,

At the meeting of the Lancaster County
Horticultural Society on Monday last, a num
ber of packages of wheat, from the Experi
mental Farm in Chester county, were dis
tributed. The varieties Were the White
Chaff Mediterranean, from imported seed,
Week's White, Extra Early Jersey, Russian
Amber, Rough and Ready, Italian White
Chaff, Diehl, Treadwell, German Amber and
Hungarian Red.
On last Saturday night the house of Zeelm
ries Minnish, near Neilsonle, this county,
was entered by two burglars. They ap
proached the bed of Mr. M. and his wife, and
made a demand for money. Mr. M. Sprang
from his bed and called for his hired man,
when the villains made a hasty retreat. They
were both armed. On the next night two
men entered the house of a son of the above,
and were more successful. Mr. M. was
struck on the head with a club, and they
helped themselves to the good things in the
kitchen and cellar. Very little money was
stolen at'elffier place, but from one et there a
quantity ofjeweity was taken.

Mr. Emanuel Shober, proprietor of the
Eagle Hotel, of this city, fell dead in his
buggy, while returning from his paper mill
at Slackwater, this county, on Monday
last, is company with Mr. John Bair, of York
Furnace. Heart disease is said to have been
the cause. Hie sudden death will be mourned
by the whole community.
A GRAND Republican mass meeting will
