131 - T your candidate I cannot be—Sey mour. :July 91h, 1868. But your President I cannot be—Seymour Nov. 8, 1868. This is also a favorite remedy among Copperheads, but they insist upon ma king the application inwardly, and con sequently the lice continue to live, pros per and multiply. JEFF DAVIS wrote a letter to a friend recently, in which he says : " I heartily endorse both platform and candidates of the New York Convention." ced. FRANK BLAIR, about two years ago, was seen at the Philadelphia Continen tal Hotel, gloriously drunk. AT a Blair and Seyttiour meeting, held in Kentucky last week, a collection was taken up to erect a monument to the memory of J. Wilkes Booth. THE original. carpet-baggers were a crowd of Copperhead draft skedaddles, making tracks for Canada about the year 1863. A PROMINENT Copperhead of Burling ton, lowa, who is now in California, writes home that the thing is all up— California will give 25,000 majority for Grant. THE New York Journal of Commerce (Copperhead) gives up ; says the Cop perheads committed a great blunder in constructing their platform, but a more serious one in the nominations. THE Raleigh Standard guarantees fifty thousand majority for Grant in North Carolina. DEMOCRATS are again operating on the boats between Hartford and New York. If they can't get into the State rooms through the doors, they go outside and lean through the windows, stealing whatever may conic within their reach. OVER the entrance of the county jail of Sussex county, New Jersey, is now in scribed: " Copperhead Headquarters and Reading Room. Free to all. Walk in." highly appropriate. IN 1860 Frank I'. Blair pronounced the Copperhead party "the most miser able and corrupt party that ever existed outside of h . " THE New York World says : "Sey mour's friends comprise the majority in New York." That accounts for the fact that New York is the worst governed city in the United States. SCRATCH a Copperhead and you'll find a Rebel under his skin. "GRANT has got to work early if he expects to get a victory," quoth a Copper head. "lie `worked' Early once in the Shenandoah, and got one," quoted a Re publican. "TILE Copperheads go for civil liberty," says The Lousisville Journal. Yes, and they go for every thing they can lay their thieving hands upon. WADE HAMPTON pledges his party to war, and the wiser heads say, "It is not expedient to do so just now; we cannot afford to throw off the disguise .yet. When we have deceived the people into our support, then will be time enough." TUE Rebel General Wade Hampton, in a late speech said: That the cause for which they, fought, and jor which Stonewall Jackson died, will yet be gained in the elec tion of Seymour and Blair." LIFT a man out of the gutter and you raise him from Copperheadism. GRANT will be whipped, says the World. And so it said all through the war. But it always turned out that in stead of Grant it was "the other fellow" who was whipped. And so it will be Dow. FRANK BLAIR in a speech at Terre Haute, Ind., only three years ago, declar ed he would rather sleep with a nigger than with a Copperhead. "WHAT think you of the Democratic nomination?" inquired a Copperhead official of a one-legged Union soldier, the other day. "I regard them an outrage ous insult to the American people," was the soldier's reply, "and if any man asks me to vote for them, I shall be tempted to break my crutch over his head." oral DEAD: WEDNESDAY, Aug. 12th, A. M.— Thaddeus Stevens died at precisely 12 o'clock, last night at his residence in Washington, D. C. THE CAMPAIGN I—GRANT AND COL FAX I—FORMATION OF CLUBS, Szc..— From different parts of the county we hear the good news that the young men of the party are awake to the importance of thorough organization. In quite a number pf townships Grant and Colfax campaign clubs have already been formed while in others preparations to that are being made. In Warwick on Saturday night last a club was formed by electing David Bricker, President ; 11. Tshudy, Recording Secretary ; N. S. Wolle, Cor responding Secretary, and J. L. Stehman, Treasurer. A meeting , to perfect the or ganization will be held to-morrow even ing.. On the same evening, a large and en thusiastic Republican meeting assembled at the public house of David Cramer, in Rawlinsville. B. F. Rowe was called to the chair. Stirring speeches were made by D. P. Rosenmiller, A. C. Reiu oehl, R. W Shenk, W. A. Wilson, J. B. Amwake, Esqs., and others. At a late hour the meeting adjourned with cheers for Grant, Colfax and the State ticket. The citizens of Silver Springs met on Friday evening, August 7th, and organ ized a Grant and Colfax Club, with the following officers : President, H. G. Bruck art ; Vice-Presidents, C. M. Bucher, Ben ton Garber, Jacob 11. Hirshey, Samuel Myers, D. R. Kauffman, Eli J. Barr, Jacob Kendia, Michael Burch John Weaver, Jacob Gram, Jacob Burch, ; Recording Secretaries,, W. S. Bruchart and A. L. Hershey; Corresponding Sec retary, Dr. G. W. Berntheizel. Au ad- journed meeting will be held on Satur day, 22d inst. The campaign was opened at Mount ville on Saturday evening last by a large Republican meeting, which was addressed by Gen. Fisher, J. W. Johnson, S. A Airylie, E. C. Reed and Capt.." I'. Rea, Esqs. On the 4th instant, a Campaign Club was formed at this place. The hil lowing were elected officers : President, A. W. Witmer, Vive-Presidents, C. C. Seitz and Henry Neff; Secretary, J. B. Develin ; Corresponding Secretary, J. S. Clair ; Treasurer, John M. Glider.— The Republicans of West Ilemptield are hard at work and will render a good account of themselves in October and November next. Let the Republicans of every township bestir themselves, and the " Old Guard" will roll up a majority for Grant and Colfax of at least 7,000. READING POST, O. 16, G. A. We therefore present it to the consideration of an intelligent public as INCOMPARABLY the BEST SEWING M 4 ICHINE IN THE WORLD It is light running—almost noiseless—and adapted to a wider range of work than any other SEWING MACHINE, While it is, at the same time, very simple indeed. A child can, with all ease, learn to use it in a short time. We can assure the public that they will look to their OWN INTEREST, If in want of a SEWING MACHINE, TO SEE, TEST AND TRY THE SINGER, Before deciding to take it or any other Machine. Parties often come to town in search of a Machine, and then listen to the advice of interested parties, or those who have but a limited knowledge of the Machines in question. BETTER SEE THEM FOR YOURSELVES, FRIENDS, And then you will not be deceived. W . w. BEARD SLEE, Agent, No. 3 EAST ORANGE STREET, (Two Doom from North Qqeen,) LANCASTER, PA.
