Sherman, who murdered Sam uel Dowhower, in Putman county, 111., has been convicted at Ottawa, and sen tenced (o twenty-live years in the Peni tentiary. As Sherman is intensely Dem ocratic, his present situaDon will add one to Grant's overwhehning majority in Il linois. Every little helps. IN the canvass which is progressing, the question which is palpably before the country is, Shall the verdict of the war •sland, and the Shothern ,States be free States, or shall the verdict be effaced and slavery restored! Slit-morlitt, whose name appears at the head of the Copperhead ticket for Presi dent, is no relation to the large and re spectahle family of Moyers in Eastern Pennsylvania. OWEN GALLAGHER was committed by Alderman Jones, Philadelphia, in de fault of :i,1001) bail, on a charge of stealing a pair of pntaloons. Owen is a Cop perhead Ivard politician. THE Republicans of Gold Hill, :Nevada, have elected their full ticket in the hard est fought election ever held in that city. This is a Repuhlican gain, and the first gun fl•oui the West. low do you like it, Cops t tia-ay. A temperance lecturer offered Frank Blair four dollars a day and grub, as well as all other expenses, to travel and fur nish the " frightful example." SINCE the nomination of Blair for the Vice-('residency, workmen have been employed to fix up another apartment in the State Inebriate Asylwu. A NEW lodge of the P. L. L. has just been organized at Reading, and Dr. Wil liam Hargreaves elected the presiding officer. Grant and Colfax, of course. A COPPERHEAD lawyer of Reading the other day contended that General Sey mour was the hero of Gettysburg and Ap pomattox ! THE Cleveland Plainduder calls upon its democratic friends to afling out the flag of purest white." That means a flag of truce—" unconditional surrender." A GERMAN shoemaker the other day said : " like Grant because he don't blow. Ile minds his own business and makes no fuss about it." THE Democrats are so deficient in arithmetic that in adding up Northern States they don't know how to " carry ont." SEYMOUR MAN-I tell you what, sir, Democracy is looking up. Grant Man— Well, your bogus Democracy is so flat on its back that it can't look any other way. AN Irish blacksmith, named James Burke, was stabbed, in New York on Sunday evening last, by Joseph Dillon. Both are Democrats. SVi►EN you see an individual en joying a free wheelbarrow ride to the station-house, it is safe to bet that he is a Democrat. JAcoB Arts, Democrat, was arrested at Frankfort Road, Phila., on Tuesday, charged with the larceny of a pair of MEE Fort the effects of the bloody tendency of Copperheadism, see accounts of mur ders, suicides and outrages in the col umns of the leading daily newspapers. ALFRED ALEXANDER, (democrat) convicted of the murder of Phillis Procter, will he hung in the yard of the Moya mensing prison on the 25th inst. IF the Copperheads love the Union and the Constitution so well, how is it that they waged war on both for four years? THERE is a man in New York so dirty that the assessors put him down as real estate. He is a Copperhead, of course. SEYMOUR'S physician says he is likely to become crazy within a year. Insanity runs in that directj,on. Beware of Blair ! SEYMOUR, it seems, is hunting up cer tificates of loyalty, during the war Where's the razor strap man ? WILY is the Republican party purer now than it was four years ago ? Be cause the Blairs have all left it. GEN. Dix can't go Seymour and Blair. He is openly and squarely for Grant and CoAux. So it goes. THE full name of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court is Salmon Pickled Chase. Tilt reason why ]lair was nominated for Vire-President is because no decent man would accept it. A HARD burnt brick—Brick Pomeroy fool puns. THE " OLD GUARD" AROUSED !- GRAND REPUBLICAN RALLIE.S.-A large and enthusiastic meeting of the Repub licans of the Third Ward, of thili city, was held on Friday evening last, at the public house of John S. Blanks, corner of South Queen and Middle streets. The meeting was held under the auspices Qf the Grant and Colfax club of the Ward, and, considering the short notice given, the large turn-out was really surprising, it being much larger than the Copper head ratification meeting held in Centre Square, a short time ago. The meeting was called to order by R. W. Shenk, Esq., President of the Club, who made a brie, o and telling speech. He was followed by Major A. C. Reinoehl, J. B. Amwake, Esq., and Marriott Brosius z Esq. The speeches were listened to with great at- tention, and the speakers were frequently Nvarmly applauded. During the eveniut , the City Cornet Hand visited the nn i and performed a number of popular and patriotic airs. At the close of Mr. Brosius' speech, the meeting adjourned, and a portion Of it formed in line and marched to the Ex ittoiner trntf fierafil office in North Queen street, where an impromptu meeting was organized. Tell ing speeches were here made by Capt.J. I'. Ilea, Major 11. IV. Shenk and .1. B. Amwake, Esq. Let the other wards dis play equal activity, and they will render a good account in October and November next. In Millersville a meeting was held on Friday evening last, for the purpose of organizing a Grant and Colfax Campaign Club. A large crowd assembled, and the enthusiasm was immense. Addresses were deliver ‘ ed by .1. G. Peters, Chas. Denue, Esq., and others. J. B. Amwake, Esq., addressed the Grant Club, at llohrerstown, on Thurs day evening. A large number of persons were in attendance. A meeting for the Organization of a Grant and Colfax Campaign Club will he held to-morrow evening, at Concert Litiz. A full attendance is ex pected. SINGER'S SEWING MACHINE Proved itself without a rival in the late test trial in this city with the Howe Machine. We therefore present it to the consideration of an intelligent public as INCOMPARABLY the BEST SEWING MACHINE IN THE WORLD It is light running—almost noiseless—and adapted to a wider range of work than any other SEWING MACHINE, While it is, at the same time, very simple indeed. A child can, with all ease, learn to use it in a short time. We can assure the public that they will look to their OWN INTEREST, If in want of a SEWING MACHINE, TO SEE, TEST AND TRY THE SINGER, Before deciding to take it or any other Machine. Parties often come to town in search of a Machine, and then listen to the advice of interested parties, or those who have but a limited knowledge of the Machines in question. BETTER SEE THEM FOR YOURSELVES, FRIENDS, And then you will not be deceived. W. W. BEARDSLEE, Agent, No. 3 EAST ORANGE STREET, (Two Doors from North Queen,) LANCASTER, PA.
