POLITICAL COREESPONDENCE.—Mess
rs. Amos 11. Mylin, W. L. Bear, H. R.
Brenema,n, David Miles, J. J. ochran,
H. N. Breneman, Samuel.F. Rathvon and
John P. Rea, addressed a letter to Hon.
E. Billingfelt, dated July Ist., on the
subject of alleged Legislative corruption,
and "knowing that the - Republican voters
of Lancaster county have full confidence
in your (Senator BillingfeltM impartial
judgment," and believing that his posi
tion as Senator has given ample opportu
nity to learn the qualifications and integ
rity of Capt. Godshalk and Maj. A. C.
Reinoehl, desire an expression of his
views respecting them.
Mr. Billingfelt replied by letter, dated
July 4th instant, in which he says :
"Whilst doubting the propriety of criti
cism on my part, and having no desire to
set myself up in judgment over the
public acts of my colleagues, I cannot
deny the right of my constituents to ask
and obtain such infgmation. * * *
Ample opportunities were afforded me
last winter to satisfy myself that both
Messrs. Godshalk and. Tidwell endea
vored to discharge their duties with fidel
ity ; and furthermore, judging from the
opposition they have to encounter, I have
reason to believe that neither is identi
fied with any of the rings, cliques or fac
tions, but free to act for the interests
of the public, Untrammeled by any cor
rupt influences. Both these men imper
illed their lives to save the country; both
have been wounded (the former maimed
for life) on the battle-field, and both as
faithfully served their constituents in the
Halls of Legislation as they served their
country during the darkest days of the
rebellimi. I feel as though the Republi
cans of the ' Old Guard' will not have it
said that they are ungrateful."
THE FOURTH. was celebrated through
out the country in various ways. At
Reading, a number of Sunday Schools
enjoyed pic-nics,. and several societies,
such as the American Mechanics, Juniors
and Firemen, paraded the streets with
banners, flags and music.
In Lancaster city, the fourth was ush
ered in by the ringing of church and tire
bells, which rang at intervals also during
the entire day. Beyond the firing of
crackers and other pyrotechnics, there
were no displays of a patriotic character
that we heard of. •
The principal point of attraction was
Litiz Springs, which was beautifully il
luminated and crowded with visitors from
Reading, Columbia, Lancaster and other
places.
A Sunday School celebration took place
at Adamstown during the afternoon, and
in the evening an address was delivered
in front of Capt. Evans' Hotel by "Father
Abraham," Sr., to a large number of
citizens.
.AN EXPLANATION FEOM Mn. STEN"-
: The following letter front Mr.
Stevens Ava; received by Dr. Henry Car
penter, of this city :
June 23, I,CB
DEAR ;sin : I learn that there was a rctiort
in,.l-ancaster that I opposed paying due tenors
to Mr. Buchanan, at his funeral.
(In the other hand, I attempted twice to
introduce resolutions laudatory of Mr. Bu
chanan's private character and personal his
tory, and asked the House to adjourn to
attend his funeral. A single objection would
prevent its being introduced that day. Mr.
Van Wyck, of New York, constantly objected.
I earnestly appealed to him to withdraw the
object ion. He persisted until I left the House.
lie then permitted a very tame resolution,
barely appointing a committee, to be passed.
I am anxious that this mistake should be cor
rected, for I should be ashamed of such prej
udice against the dead. I have no such pelu
dice. I would be glad if you could have this
statement in some way communicated to the
public, through Democratic organs, as I do
not wish Mr. Buchanan's friends to believe
so mean a thing. THADDEUS STEVENS.
