Baft.
There was a fellow once who step
ped out of the door of a tavorn on the
Missi-isippi, meaning to walk a mile up
the shore to the next tavern. Just at
the landing there lay a big raft, one of
the old fashioned whalers—a raft a
mile long.
Well, the fellow heard the landlord
say the raft was a mile long, and he
said to himself, H will go further and
see this great wonder, and let my eyes
behold the timber which the hand of
man hath hewn.' So he got on the
lower end and began to ambulate over
the raft in prettj* fair time. But just
as he got started the rait started too.
and as he walked up the river it went
down, both going at the same rate
When he got to the end of the sticks
ho found they were near shore and in
sight of the tavern;so he landed and
walked straight into the bar-rcom he'd
come out of The general sameness of
things took him a little aback, but he
looked the landlord steadily in the face
and settled it in his own way.
'Publican,' said be, 1 are you gifted
with a twin brother, who keeps a sim
ilar sized tavern, with a duplicate wife,
a comporting woodpile, and correspon
ding circus bill, a mile from here?'
The tavern keeper was fond of fun,
and accordingly said it was just so.
'And publican, have you among your
dry goods for the entertainment of
man and horse, whisky of the same
size as that of your brother's?'
And the tavern man said, from the
rising of the sun even unto the going
down of the same, he had
They took the drinks, when the
stranger said :
'Publican, that twin brother of yours
is a fine young man—a very fine man,
indeed. But do you know, I'm afraid
ho suffers a good deal with the Cliica
go diptheria ?'
'And what's that?' replied the tod
sticker.
'lt's when the truth settles so far in
a man that none of it ever comes
out. Common doctors, of the catnip
sort, call it lyin'. When I left your
brother's confectionery, there was a
raft at his door, which he swore by his
life was a mile long. Well, publican,
1 walked that raft from biil to tail,
from his door to yours. Now, I know
my time, an' I'm just as good for my
self as a boss, and better than any
man you ever did see. I always walk
a mile in exactly twenty minutes on a
good road, and I'll ho busted with an
overloaded Injun gun if I've been
mor'n ten minutes coming here, step
pin' over the blamed logs.'
Curiosity.
A person of an observing turn of
mind, if he has rode through a coun
try town, has noticed how curious
youngsters along the i-oute will fill the
windows with anxious faces in order
to get a glimpse at all passers by. A
Yankee peddler drove up in front of a
house one day, and seeing all hands
and the cook staring from the win
dows, got off from his cart, when the
fallowing dialogue took place with the
man of the house :
Jonathan. Has there been a funer
al here lately ?
Man of the house. No; why?
Jonathan. I saw there was one pane
of glass that cidn't have a head in it
Man. You leave blasted quick, or,
there will he a funeral.
GOOD — A candidate for office, can
vassing bis district for voters, came
upon a poor Mr. White, who had a
vote to cast. Poor Whito was milk
ing when Mr. Office seeker fonnd him
"Shall 1 hold her?" asked he, see
ing the animal was uneasy. The obi,
man consented; the office-seeker took
the cow by the horns and the man pro
cecded with his milking.
" Have you had Lasheil around hero,
lately?" asked the candidate present-:
ly ?" referring to his rival.
"Oh, yes," said the old man, " lie's|
behind the barn, holding the calf!"
The next time that cow was seen it
was rather uneasy.
Talking of muslin, the author
of the following has it badly :
Soft o'er the mountain, lingering, J J
shone the summer moon. I went to a
vanilla shop and thought I'd sling a
spoon. Behind the counter stood a
maid with her hair in a balloon.
•Are you a nice screamer?' she said,
as in 1 drew. 'Yes, very nice,' was
my answer, 'but not half so nice as.
\ ou. Nor half so much of a screamer i
—although I can scream a few.'
Oh, certain looks and accents dart
sunshine through the soul. She didn't i
bring in a saucer—she brought in a
bully bowl. Four kinds, with a rasp
berry on the top. And I swallowed |
up the whole.
I took her by the fingers as at her
my glances went. " How many pence;
is the recompense?" and says she, "To!
such a gent I always give double sas !
6crs full and never charges a cent."
The shadows were slowly falling as
our moaning glances met. I put my
self on the sofa and down on my knee;
she set, while I whispered, "Ho you
love me ?" and she answered, " Beloved
—you bet."

1 are superior to all other- for the following reasons: .
1 I hey sew direct from the ..pools, and lequirc no i

2. They are more easily understood and ued, and ;
less liable to derangement than other maeliines.
3. They are eapuble of executing perfectly, without :

4. The stitch made by these machines i much more
firm, elastic, and durable, e-pecially upon article, j
which require to he washed and ironed, than any
other stitch.
5. This stitch, owing to the manner in which tfie
