RECIPES.
Railroad Cake. — Ono cup milk, 2
cups sugar, 3 cups flour, 1 cup butter,
3 eggs, 1 teaspoon of salt, 1 of soda, 2
of cream of tartar; spice and flavor to
your taste. Mix the cream of tartar
dry in the flour, dissolve the soda in
the milk and add it the last thing.—
Bake it in tins like Spanish buns.
To make Cold Cream. —Three ounces
of oil of almonds, half an ounce of sper
maceti, and a quarter of an ounce of
white wax. These must bo melted
over the lire and poured in a warm
glass rr marble mortar, when as much
orange flower or rose water as the
mixture will take up should be put in
by degrees.
To Bake Shad. —A layer of shad and j
one of pepper, sail and alspiee; also a
very little whole mace, and so on, un j
til the stone jar or pan be filled. Cover j
it with vinegar, tie over it several thick
sheets of paper, send it to the baker's i
and let it stand in their oven all night, i
That is capital.

ironed until they are worn out.
6. The structure of the seatn is such that though it
be cut or broken at intervals of only a few stitches it
w ill neither open, run, or ravel, but remains firm and

the seam bv their own operation.
8. With these maehines, white silk is used upon the
right or face side of the seam, cotton may Ire used
upon rheother side without lessening the strength or
durability ot the seam. This can be done on no other
machine, and is a great saving upon all articles stitch
ed or made up with silk.
9. These machines, in addition to their superior
merits as instruments for sewing, by a change of ad
justment. easily learned and practiced, execute the
most beautiful and permanent embroidery and orna
mental work.
