BECIPSS. WESTERN CAKE. —One cup of sugar, four eggs, half cup butter worked to Cream, one cup of flour, teaspoon of Baking. powder. This makes a small • 04 ke. . * SUPERIOR WASHING SOAP. —Take 5 ABs. bar soap, or seven lbs good soft soap, 5 lbs. sal soda, 2 oz. borax, 1 oz hartshorn, and dissolve in 22 quarts of water, then boil about 15 minutes. For hard soap add to the above half a pound of rosin. From IVierson's Magazine for April. ROLLED MOLASSES PUDDING Good for Children. —To all who like sweet pudding, it is very nice. Make a crust of flour and suet, taking care to free the suet from ail shreds of skin and fleshy matter; chop it as fine aspossi hie, and rub it well into tbe flour, in the proportion of a quarter of a pound, or five or six ounces'of suet, according to the quality desired, to every pound of flour. Work it with water to a smooth paste, roll it out to about the thickness of half an inch, spread the molasses over it equally, leaving a small margin all the way round. Roll the pudding up, closing the ends se curely, and tie it up in a clean floured cloth, plunge into boiling water, and boil for two hours. A quarter of a pound of molasses, and one pound of suet-crust makes a good light pudding. Using lard, instead of suet, the pud ding may be baked for a change; it must be in the oven from an hour and a half to two hours. Rice Cakes. — Ifavo ready nine fresh eggs, half a pouu 1 of ground rice, half a pound of flour, half a pound of pound ed loaf sugar, the rind of one lemon, a little orange flower water, and some caraway seeds. Beat the eggs thor oughly, and then mix in the sugar, the lice, the flour, and the caraway seeds, thickly or sparely, according to faftcy. Grate in the peei of a lemon, and beat the baiter until the beating has gone on for an hour from the time of first beating up the eggs. This time it may be increased, but it must not be short ened, and the batter must be immedi ately divided into little cakes, and placed in the oven. German Cakes. —Beat up four eggs, beat into them half a pound of butter melted until it becomes liquid, a pint and a half of warm milk, and a teacup ful of yeast Stir in as much flour as will make tho mixture stiff, then tie it closely in a cloth, put it into a pail of water, and leave it there until it ri ses to the top. Take the dough out of the cloth, mix with it three-quarters of a pound of sugar, the same of rais ins, stoned, chopped lemon peel, citron, and almonds, and divide it into cakes two inches across. Place these cakes on tins, and bake them. THE REST IN THE WORLD ■ nVHE UNDERSIGNED IS AGENT FOR THE IMPROVED SINGER SEWING MACHINE, which will be placed upon trial with a iv other n. w n nsc. Experience Proves there are only Two VALUABLE machine Stitches : uh m m & mkui E L A S T I C S T I T C II AND THE SHUTTLE OR LOCK STITCH. THE Grover A Baker Elastic-Stitch Sewing Machines are superior to all others for the following reasons: 1. They sew direct from llie spools, and require no rewinding of thread. 2. They are more easily understood aud used, sad less liable to derangement than other machines. 3. They are capable of executing perfectly, without change of adjustment, a much greater vaiietv of work than other machines. 4. The stitch made by these machines is much more fir m, elastic, and durable, especially upon articles which require to he washed ami lioned, than snv other stitch. 6. This stitch, owing to the manner in which Bo under thread ia inwrought, is much the-most plump and beautiful in use, an.i retains this plumpness and beauty even upon articles frequently washed and ironed until they are worn out. 6. The structure of the seam is such that though it be cut or broken at intervals of only a few stitches it will neither open, run, or ravel, but remains firm ami durable. 7. Unlike other machines, these fasten both ends of the seam liy the r own operation. 8. With these machines, white silk is used upon tie right or faee side ot the seam, cotton may be usc-1 upon the other side without lesst mug the stieiigtli < r durability of the seam. This can be done on nootlu i machine, and is a great saving upon all articles stitch ed or made up with silk. 9. 1 hese machines, in addition to their mpt-ruT merits as instruments for sew ing, bv a change of ad justment, easily learned and practiced, execute th most beautihil and permanent embroidery and orna mental work.
