RECIPES — . Cottage Pudding■ —Three tablespoons of melted butter, one cup of sugar, one cup of sweet milk, one egg, one pint of sifted flour, two teaspoons of cream tartar, one of soda. Boil steadily one and one-half hours. Good Doughnuts. —One and one half cups of brown sugar, two eggs, a piece of butter the size of an egg, two and one-bulf cups of sweet milk, one tea spoon of soda; flavor with nutmeg and a little salt; flour enough to make suffi ciently still to roll out, and fry in hot fat. Scouring Knives. —A small clean po tato, with the end cut off, is a very convenient way of applying brick dust to the knives, keeping it about the right moisture, while the juice of the potato assists in removing the strains from the surface. Carrot Jam. —When carrots are in perfection, clean and peel as many as you wish to make into jam. Puttheni into a closed stewpan, with as much water as will prevent their burning. Bake them, and, when cold, pulp them through a scire. To every pound of pulp add the same weight of sugar. Boil it well, and, when cold, add lemon juice to taste. Freckles are removed in a surprising short time by a perfectly new process, which no one but the writer is ac quainted with. This process I have tried first or. my own person, and the good effect obtained warrants its gen eral introduction into the toilet rooms and boudoirs of the world. Here it is; Take pow It-red saltpetre, and ap ply it to the parts affected by the fin ger, moistened and dipped into the powder. This is the whole proceed ing; when properly done and judicious ly repeated, it will remove all the freckles from the face. Cranberry Tart. —Take half a pint of cranberries, pick them from the stems and throw them into a saucepan with half a pound of white sugar and a spoonful of water; let them come to a boil; then retire them to stand on the hob while you peel and cut up four large apples; put a rim of light paste round your dish; strew in the apples; pour the cranberries over them; cover with a lid of crust, and bake for an hour. For a pudding, proceed in the same manner with the fruit, and boil it in a basin or cloth. List of Causes for Trial at April Term, 1867. , , No. T. Year. J. Mare Lehr vs Gabriel Lehr, 9 Nov. 1866 2. Experience Proves there are only- Two VALUABLE Machine Stitches: mi mmm & ELASTIC STITCH AND THE SHUTTLE OR LOCK STITCH. TH E Grover A Baker Elastic-Stitch Sewing Machines are superior to all others for the following reasons: 1- They sew direct front the spools, and require no rewinding of thread. 2. They are more easily understood and used, and less liable to derangement than other machine* 3. They are capable of executing perfectly, without change of adju.uiient,a much greater variety of work than other machines. 4. The stitch made by these machines is much more firm, elastic, and durable, especially upon articles which require to be washed and ironed, than any other stitcli. & This stitch, owing to the manner in which the under thread is inwrought, is much the mo.-t plump and beautiful in use, an.l retains this plumpness and beauty even upon articles frequently washed and ironed until they are worn out. 6. I he structure of the seam is such thst though it be cut or broken at intervals of only a few stitches it will neither open, run, or ravel, but remains firm and durable. ~ I nlike other machines, these fasten both ends of the seam bv their own operation. 8. With these machines, white silk is used upon the right or face side of the seam, cotton may be used upon the other side without lessening the strength or durability of the seam. This can be done on no other machine, and is a great saving upon all articles sutch ed or made up with silk. 9. These machines, in addition to their superior merits as instruments for sewing, by a change of ad justment, easily learned and practiced, execute the most beautiful and permanent embroidery and orna mental work. -Call at P.
