R E CIPE S. Slobbering in Honrs. —A correspond ent of the Boston Cultivator says that this is a disease in horses. Saltpetre, a tablespoonful for a dose, he lias fcund to cure the worst case he ever had, and has not found it necessary ever to give the fourth dose. He gives a table spoonful in the morning, and in three days, if'hc is not free from it, he re peats the dose. Cure for S. /f sucking Coirs. —A Steu ben county correspondent of the Gen esee Farmer says that he cured a three year ol 1 heifer of sucking herself by smearing her teats night and morning with soft grease, and then dusting them thoroughly with pulverized cayenne pepper. The applications were con tinued about a week, and a perfect cure effected. Sore Bcks. —When the disease has proceeded to or approaches ulceration and brought about one of those slug gish, ill-conditioned ulcers, with flabby granulations, and an ichorous dis charge. my remedy is lint steeped in warm 'gum elemi ointment,' the oint ment to be heated in a spoon over a candle, and the lint, tine and well soaked in this, to be inserted into the sore. 1 have known more progress ef fected bj' this dressing in one week than by threo months of other treat ment — Blackicood. U'ort/t Knowing. —A poison of any conceivable description and degree of potency, which has been swallowed in tentionally or by accident, may be ren dered almost instantaneously harmless by swallowing two gills of sweet oil. An individual with a very strong con stitution should (alee twice that quarili ty. One kind of work which farmers have been much accustomed to perform in winter time, hitherto, was that of turning the proper timber into rails and stakes for fences. Doubtless many look with a feeling of sorrow and ap prehension, at the present time, on their decaying fences, and woodlot de void of timber for rebuilding them, and wonder what another generation will do when the rails and rail limber are alike among the tilings of the past. Weil, among other important sub jects which the farmer should careful ly consider and discuss, in his time of leisure, is this fence question. The rail fence, has had its day; from neces sity we must abandon it when the present stock of rails is worn out and decayed. And with it will vanish a slovenly appendege to the farm—one of the chief harboring places of small vermin and foul weeds, and a too con venient receptacle of stone, stumps, or any loose rubbish of the fields. If, then, the state of our farming is such that fences arc a necessity, and arc likely to so continue, we must adopt some thing more readily accessible than tim ber, and more durable and tasty. On the vast, monotonous prairies, we think is the most appropriate place for hed ges; the fields are likely to be made large, and in the absence ot hills and groves these lines of living green are needed to break the monotony of view, and supply some shelter from the bleak winds. Hedge rows running north and south should be grown as tall as possible. In Now England, the Middle and Southern States, the sole use of a fence is to turn stock; and it is desirable to occupy as little land with it as possi ble. Where stone abound other mate rial will be less required. Tti many places ditches with a sod and stone wall will answer the c'yunle require ment of drain and fence, and there will, doubtless, eventually be lound hedging plants adapted to the coldestand wann est sections. In this connection it is not amiss to hint to the tile makers that it is just possible burnt clay, in some form may become a substitute for the wooden ends of fence posts that are inserted in the ground. But we will just hint to the farmers who arc anxiously studying how to re store their fences 111 the cheapest man ner. that the first step is to disponse ! with a largo proportion of what you alioady havo. This will give some ma terial to repair the remainder. Mako tho fields larger—but remember it is not necessary to always plow the whole field, or sow ii all to one crop. All the grain land and meadows might be in one field and thus save hundreds of rods of fence on a farm. A string of movable fence may be used when por tions of it arc required lor pasture. In short, look over your farm and calcu late how many lines of useless fence you have ; next, how many rods of per manent fence can you dispense with by using one hundred rods of movable ; third, what material you can best use to make your indispcnsible fences re ally permanent. — Rural New Yorker.
