LOCAL AFFAIRS. Jacob, son of David Mutthers bough of this place, had his leg broken while attempting to climb a fence at the Academy, ou Wednesday or Thursday of last week. The boys were at play, and in trying to get over his feet caught when he fell backward, breaking his leg and spraining his ankle. THE LECTURE.— The talented Pastor of the Presbyterian church of this place. Rev. O. O. McClean, will deliver alecture in the Town Hall, on THE DIGNITY OF LABOR, on to-morrow (Thursday) even ing. Having had the privilege of read ing this lecture, we can assure our citizens that a rich literary treat is in store for them. For elegance of style and diction, richness of thought, beauty of expression, and sound practical teaching, this lecture is equal to any we have ever heard. We bespeak a full and appreciative audience. UssT'The Holidays are fast approaching, and it is high time for every one to he thinking where they can purchase gifts to the best advantage. We would there fore apprise the public of the interesting fact that Grove will receive or now has a tremendously large assortment of goods for old and young. Visit his establish ment, and be delighted with the display. He supplies parties and families with OY STERS, which can l>e had by the quart or pint, fresh every Saturday evening. t%. The "Eureka Bridle," patented by Mr. Joseph C. Haines, promises to super cede all other inventions for safely gov erning and curbing horses, being so effec tual that any lady, girl or boy, with the slightest presence of mind, can check any horse disposed to be vicious or unruly, and thus prove a safeguard against acci dents. It need but to be seen to be ap preciated, for, while nothing could be more simple, its power in checking a horse is so apparent that it cannot fail to impress itself upon every one. But, be sides, we have testimony of experienced horsemen, and we know that some of these aver they can drive and govern the most unruly horse in the county with the aid of this safety bridle, When we re flect that all horses are at times likely to be fractious, and consequently that all riders and drivers are thus in danger, wisdom would seem to dictate that every one owning a horse ought to have a safe ty bridle. Many of our citizens no doubt remem ''ef that a band of Gipsies who visited tuis neighborhood several months ago i.ad witii them several half-grown girls. - 1 appears that not all of these were chil dren of the strolling fortune-tellers and orse-tr iders. A Pittsburgh paper an ' 'uuees the escape of three or the girls troui the Gipsies. The paper says : I hree little girls, poorly clad, came to < e office of Mayor Morrison, of Alle r teny, on Thursday evening, and gave t ieir names and ages as follows: Katy annou. aged between twelve and thir- en; Mary Ann Laulers, thirteen, and u*resa Maloy, aged between eleven and twelve They state that they were taken from their homes in Buffalo, New York, a oand of Gipsies, who are now loea- \ ted near the Catholic Ciiureli, at Manches- • ter. rhey say that there are four fami- j lies located iu shanties at that place, which were built by themselves; that there are in the band three men and four women, beside their children. The names of the men are John Sherlock, James Caslow and Bryan Garman. The eldest girl, Mary Ann Laulers, states that her mother, at the time she left her, resided on Main street, in Buffalo, and that Mrs. Caslow came to her mother and stated that she lived on Seuaca street, j and would take the girl for two week* on trial, and if she suited, would pay her 1 three dollars a week and keep her. 'This was during either the months of May or June of this year. Teresa Maloy states that her parents resided on the corner of Fifth and Caroline streets when a gipsv woman got her, which was a long time | ago, she thinks three years. The smallest girl, Katy Hannon, says that she also was taken a long time since; that her father was a hoatmau and her mother died. The gipsies got her from her father. The girls all say that they have never seen their parents since they first left home, and that they have been traveling about from town to town in wagons. They mention the following names of places they have been in : Harrisburg, Carlisle, Warren, and in Rochester and New Castle. The hand have been in their present location for some months, and the girls say have their wagons put away some place in this city. 1 lie men work at mending umbrel las and tinware, while the women j>eddle. The girls have sometimes sold such arti cles as laces and nicknaeks, but general lv have to do the scrubbing, washing, Ac. They say that the women treat them very harshly sometimes, but that the men do not. The homeless girls were taken care of by Mayor Morrison, who intends to have the men brought up and their actions inquired into. Special polices.
