J. K. HARTZLEB, BMlevUle, ilidhn County, Editor Simpler, —Your article will ap pear next week. Little Tilings. \\ e propose, in this article, to dwell briefly on the influence that little things have, particularly in the school room We do not intend to delight our readers with any beautiful fancy r-uire painted in the glowing colors bich our good English is capable , doing for the imagination when in competent hands, nor do we wish to d -tract the mind by inviting it into .my labyrinth of logic; but we wish siuiplv to say a few common things We have scarcely ever heard the sitbje't of influence treated of but that the'iilusfration of the peblde dropped in o the brook has been given; and we hope it may uever be laid aside until mankind are led to see how strikingly alike are the influences ot our acts and the continuous waves produced by the dropping ot. the pebble. The shores may bound the waves, but eternity alone —and it is boundless—will bound the influence of our actions. The earth is made of grains of sand; the ocean is made of drops of water, and life is made of acts —each bearing a mighty influence. It is little things that make up the great sum of life; audit is little things that govern the school room. These, little though they be, are not, nor may not be, tilings of accident. They are little things that spring from great principles—the principles of justice, truth and right. fhese should be the basis of school government Were it not for these principles in civil court, what would properly or life he worth? The school-room is the child's world Their little affairs to them are of as great concern as ours are to us chil tireu of larger growth. A want of or a laxity in justice in the dealings of the teacher—in whom, in his pupils' eyes, is invested all legislative, execu tive and judicial powers—creates quite as sad an effect in their case as in ours did our rulers forget to exercise jus tice, truth and right. We could i 11u>- trat.e but we forbear as our object is School government We are so con stituted that in order t" secure peace and harmony which are most desira ble elements in a school —we must have justice. Don't imagine that chil dren are unable to distinguish justice from injustice. Their discernment of right and wrong is so acute that they are able to detect the faintest shade ot injustice. Let a teacher practice in justice in its lightest phase, in the most trifling case, and because we hate a dark picture, we close our eyes from tracing its influence. There are many little tilings that have great influence over a school; but in analyzing them we find that they all spring from the one great root —justice— not stern jus tice, as it isometimes termed, but loving, tender, Christ like justice to the child, to the community and to the teacher himself. We could particularize to an indefi nite length, but we leave tho subject • o the intelligent consideration of ear tte ichers. dhere there is justice • re will be harmony, where there is harmony there is order—having ileav i sfii-.t law the rest will naturally follow E PRICES DOWN ONCE MORE.
