LOCAL, AFFAIRS.
HIGH WATER. —The rains last week
were unusually heavy at the head waters
of the Juniata, and on Friday the river
rose rapidly, about a foot an hour, until
it covered thetowpath below town. Some
gardens along the creek were partially in
undated, but otherwise no damage was
sustained here. Above us hbwever con
siderable injury must have been suffered,
as a large number of rails came down with
the drift, which as usual enabled quite a
number of gatherers to lay in a supply
of wood. The second railroad bridge,
(Mayes') wasin course of alteration to an
iron, and the trussels being carried away
railroad travel was delayed on Friday,
cars being shifted from one side to the
other, but the timbers having been re
placed in the arches, trains again run
regularly on Saturday morning.
IQL. Grove, who is continually getting
up some choice article for family con
sumption, has some fine fish on hand
just now, as we can testify from some spe
cimen of shad he sent us. Whoever
wants good things generally calls there,
as he has about everything from a stick
of candy to a whangdoodle.
Charley Stahl is now extensively
engaged in butchering, and to those who
call in time on market mornings can fur
nish choice beef, pork, veal, mutton, sau
sage, pudding, ponhaus, &e.
Bojr We omitted to mention last week
that it was the KEYSTONE BAND OF NEW -
TON HAMILTON, and not the McVeytown,
which serenaded the Gazette office as
well as a number of other places, and fur
nished our citizens with some excellent
music from Dipple's balcony, on the first
October. The Keystone is a first rate in
stitution, composed of good fellows thro'-
out, and we regret the error was made.
John Ruble, of Ferguson's Valley, a
whole-souled republican farmer, called on
Saturday and left us half a bushel of
splendid apples, comprising seventeen
different kinds, and says if anybody can
present the Gazette with finer apples or a
choicer assortment, he should like to hear
that it was doue.
Henry Rook lately presented us with
an apple measuring over 14 inches in cir
cumference, and Simon Wittinmeyer left
us sßme quinces, the finest we have seen
this year.
Mr. Samuel H. McCoy has the thanks
of the boys for a basket of choice apples.
ACCIDENTS. —Election night was rainy
and dark as dark could well he, and sev
eral narrow escapes from injury were
made. A brother of Mr. Lee, Superin
tendent of Freedom Iron Works, and a
gentleman from Philadelphia, undertook
to drive out from town on that night, and
horse, buggy and men went down into
Kishacoquilias creek from the high bank
this side of Mt. Rock Mills. Both gen
tlemen were considerably injured, being
both bruised and cut, and as one of them
was under the buggy when it upset in the
water, it is a matter of wonder that they
escaped with life. Dr. Marks was called
in and dressed their wounds.
George Stahl received a hurt the other
day by tlie falling of a beef at the slaugh
ter house, the beef-tree striking him on
the shoulder.
IMPORTANT TO FARMERS.—The Rural
American, which is advertised in this is
sue of our paper, is offered free three
months, and it is a very valuable publica
tion to farmers, and all persons engaged
in rural pursuits. Indeed, we know of
no paper of its class that surpasses it; and
it is considered by many to be the best—
the most practical agricultural and horti
cultural periodical in this country. The
price, only $1.50 a year, is low for such an
elegant, well edited paper; yet every sub
scriber receives sis si OKATCITY, about the
same amount in very choice grape vines
raspberry and strawberry plants, fine en
gravings, <fce. See full details in adver
tisement.
MIDDLE CREEK RAIL ROAD.—The
Board of Directors of this company, whose
election we noticed last week, have made
the following appointments:
Treasurer —E. L. Benedict.
Secretary—John A. McKee.
Attorney —Joseph Alexander.
Engineer—F. C. Arms.
The engineer and his corps arrived here
on Monday evening, and began the work
of surveying the line of the road on Tues
day.
ROBBERY.-— About a week since a jour- j
neyuiau barber decamped from the shop 1
of Emanuel Bach, in tins place, with S9O
or SIOO in his possession, belonging to the I
proprietor. He walked to Millerstown !
next day, and got aboard the night train,
on which Emanuel was also in. Finding
out this, the thief alighted at Newport, as
did Bach also, to get the constable on his
track, who followed him until he escap
ed by swimming the canal. Bach return
ed next day without the money.
On Sunday morning a week, an engine
and part of a freight train were thrown
from the track in the neighborhood of
Mount Lnion, in consequence of running
over a cow. The engineer, Mat. Vande-
Vendgr, had both his ankles sprained by
jumping, and his back hurt by being
struck by a ear. The fireman, Napoleon
Orirtith, was caught under some of the
oars and instantly killed.

so that no one need hesitate to buy a watch now from
the expectation that it will be cheaper at some future
time, ihe test of ten years and the manufacture and
sale of
More than 400.G00 Watches,
have given our productions the very*highest rank
among time keepers. Commencing with the deter
mination to make only thoroughly excellent watches,
our business has steadily increased as the public be
came acquainted with their value, until for months
together, we have been unable to supply the demand.
We have repeatedly enlarged our factory buildings
until they now cover over three acres of ground, and
give accommodation to more than eight hundred
workmen.
U e are fully justified in saying that we now make
MORE THAN ONE-HALF OF ALL THE WATCHES

A HUMBUG.
HOW often we hear this expression from persons
reading advertisements of Patent Medicines, and
in nine eases out often they may be right. It is over
19 years since I introduced my medicine, the VENE
TIAN LINIMENT, to the public. I had no money to ad
vertise it, so I lett it for sale with a few druggists and
storekeepers through a small section of the country,
many taking it with great reluctance; but I told them
to let any one have it, and if it did not do all I stated
on my pamphlet, no one need pay for it. In some
stores two or three bottles were taken on trial by per
sons present. 1 was. by many, thought crazy, and
that would be the last they would see of me. But I
knew iny medicine was no humbug. In about two
mohtbs I began to receive orders for more Liniment,
soma calling it my valuable Liniment, who had re
fused to sign a receipt when I left it at their store.—
Now my sales are millions of bottles yearly, and all
for cash. I warrant it superior to any other medicine
for the cure of Croup, Diarrhtea, Dysentery. Colic,
Vomiting, Spams and Sea-sickness, as an internal
remedy. It is perfectly innocent to take internally,
see oath accomphnying each bottle,—and externally

During late years the public have been misled by
large bottles, pretending to give a quart of Extract of
Sarsaparillia for one dollar. Most of these have been
frauds upon the sick, for they not only contain littie,
if any Sarsaparilla. but often no curative ingredient
whatever. Hence, hitter disappointment has follow
ed the use of the various extracts of .Sarsaparilla
which flood the market, until the name itself has be
come synonymous with imposition and cheat. Still
we call this compound, "Sarsaparilla."' and intend to
supply such a remedy as shall rescue the name from
the load of oploquy which rests upon it. We think
we have ground for believing it lias virtues which are
irresistible by the class of diseases it is intended to
cure. We can assure the sick, that we ofTerthein the

reason to believe, it is by far the most effectual puri

CAMPAIGNS OF THE
Army of the Potomac,
BY WILLIAM SWINTON,
THE STANDABD HISTORY OF THE
GRAND ARMY
Iho greatest work on the War. Universally endor
sed by army officers nnd the press. The AUTHOR says:
"I design in this volume to record what that Army
did and suffered in ten campaigns and two score bat
tles."
"I shall have to celebrate the unswerving loyalty of
this army, that ofttimes as the bond of military cohe
sion failed, held it. unshaken£of fortune, to* a duty
self-imposed."
*'i shall have to follow it through a checkered expe
rience. in a tale commingled of great misfortunes,
great follies and great glories; but from first to last it
will appear that, amid many bullets of fortune, thro*
•winter and rough weather,'"the Army of the Potomac
•never gave up. hut made a good fight, and finally
reached the goal."
The Army and Navy Journal says:
"This is the only American critical work on the late
war. and it is thoroughly critical aud entirely divest
ed of all political hue or tone."
This is the only History of the 'Grand Armv." and
no one who has borne a part iu its conflicts, or is in
terested in its grand achievements, should he with
out it. Ihe work sells itself. The people are tired of
political and partisan histories, and want something
from official sources. We have agents clearing over
