We are not troubled with a rush
of matter for the Educational Column ;
but we would remind all present and
prospective contributors that short ar
ticles—say half a column in length
are most likely to be generally read,
and are, therefore, preferable to longer
articles.
teaT* School No. 3, Union district,

Concerning Scholars.
The combination of mind and mat
ter in man. is not more wonderful than
the wide difference in respect to the
proper nourishment ot each. Not un
til alter the first few years of healthy
growth of the body, by means of sleep,
food and exercise, does the proper time
arrive for the gradual unfolding of the
inind by systematic training
Just at this critical point two griev
ous mistakes are often made by inju
dicious teaching. The child is either
treated as if his brain was a recepta
cle large enough to contain all the di- \
gestible and indigestible matter in the
world of learning, or else, the mind, so i
susceptible of proper stimulus at first,
becomes, by neglecting to lay a solid
base for its symmetrical rearing, a hol
low. disjointed, unsteady shamble;
over the miserable frame work of which,
the outside polish is applied that a pas
sable appearance may be made in the
world.
In the first case, nature invariably
retaliates, and the end is reached at
last when the hands that so often al
ternately trimmed the midnight lamp
and pressed the hot brow to relieve its
aching weariness, lie still, too stiilovcr
the pulseless brca-t.
\N ho has not been disgusted with
tiic wretched result of the second,
which is too often the curse of its vie
tim ?
lo avoid these extremes depends'
much on the judiciousness of the teach
or. 1 lien the oft-repeated question
arises, how CUM 1 best interest inv pu
pi Is?
I can at present speak ot but one of
Several ways I have found successful.
In reading classes, particularly those
composed of scholars between the
ages of eight and fourteen years, much
lasting interest and benefit is derived
by a short description or interesting
fact of persons or places which are so
often alluded to in our higher school '
readers. (>f course, the teacher must
be prepared for this; and I know from
personal experience the incalculable
ai'i tiiis plan gives in acquiring y/cm
information.
A verbal description is remembered
much longer by the pupil, than the !
same would be it he were required to
commit it to memory. I have oftc-r.
wished for a book that would give
brief detached accounts of celebrated
piaccs and people ot ancient and mod
•■rn times. I think, to a teacher who
has not much historical knowledge,
such a book would be- invaluable.
I do not mean that illustrations sffall
take precedence of the given lesson,
but I am convinced that a knowing
teacher will do more in a singlo term
to improve and interest pupils by well
timed remarks or, the lesion, than a
dull, matter-cf fact instructor will, in
years.
1 iion till up tho interstices i etween
the dull, dry paragraphs with interest
ing illustration or oven an anecdote
now and then Let the school-room
door close each evening on
happy faces, bright with the conscious
ness of the day's added intelligence,

attainment.
