rows through the middle of a natural
ly moist piece with seed thus prepared.
Now for the result: The live rows
planted with com sesked in the salt
petre yielded more than twenty rows
planted in the usual ■£>>' The rive
rows were untouch* n by the wire
worm, while ths remainder of the field
suffered badlv from their-depredatiom'/
and I should judge that not a single
kernel saturated with the saltpetre was
touched by the worm, while almost
every hill iu the rest of the piece suf
fered more or less. The worms are a
little kind of squeamish in regard to
eating anything that comes in their
way; hence 1 wish to lay the fact b -
fore tlie agricultural reader, and hope
it will be carefully tested tie coming
season, as the cost is comparatively
nothing when put alongside of two or
three acres of corn nearly ruined by
these pests. All moist land-are more
or less filled with them, and many fat tit
ers dare net plant corn on them, lof
they say the wire worm will spoil their
crop; hence they will let it lie uniui
mroved year alter year, when it might
"be madtfcio produce a bountiful crop.

one of currants, four sifted flour, otic
teaspoouful of soda, boil three hours in

Tom's Cuke. — 1 cup butter. 2 * cups
white sugar, 1 cup milk, 4 eggs (whitvs
and yolks beat separately.) 3 j cups of
flour, f teaspoouful soda, 1 -poonfui
cream tartar. Season with finely -lined
citron and vanilla. it makes two !
cakes.
German I'uJ's —One quart of milk,
10 eggs. 2 tat'l --sj-ouiilul- of butter. 4
of flour, one nutmeg. Bake in cups
half full.
Sauce for the Some. —The beaten
whites of three eggs—add sifted sugar
and juice of a lemon beat to a cream
Cru'lers. — Four tablespoonl'uls melt
ed butter, two of thick sour cream,
seven of white sugar, six eggs well
beaten, f teaspoouful soda. Spice to
taste. Flour to roll, cut with cake
cutter, with s all hole in the centre
cut with pepper-box cover. Fry in
hot fat.
Cook its. —One pound of butter, 1
pound sugar, 1 pound of flour, 0 egg
well beaten. Drop on tins
