J■ K. HARTZLER, BilleciHe, Mifflin County, Rlitor. A correspondent sends us a no tice of the spring examination at Kish* acoquiilus from which we make the following brief extract: "The winter session at Kisbacoqaillas Seminary closed on Friday, March 9tb. The j last two days were devoted to the ex- ! amination of students, most of whom acquitted themselves with great credit- There were sixty live pupils enrolled during the session, which is a larger number than were present at any time i during the last nine years, while the , prospects for the future were never I brighter. —--. . - For the Educational Column. A Teacher's Influence. A few years ago a correspondent of j the Jioston Transcript related the fol- j lowing interesting incident in the col- i tnnns of that paper : 'I cannot remember the year—it was long ago —that 1 passed the night un der the hospitable roof of the Hon. Salem Towne, of Charlton, in the county of Worcester. As we sat together, in the evening, and were speaking of education and of schools Mr. T ovvne informed me that about I the year 1800 he taught a school in the ; Southwestern district of Charlton. — An inhabitant of Sturbridgc, tlie ad joining town, had a son of whose abil- j ities and gciTeral character he appear- j ed to entertain a low estimate, and off whom he spoke to Mr. Towne, dispar agingly, "as a boy who gave him troub le.'' Mr. Towne, notwithstanding this paternal forewarning, consented to re- j C-eiv-e the 1 a-d MI probation. On the : evening of the very first day, the j school agent came to the teacher and : told him that the boy was a very bad I boy, and would disturb the whole i and nrust be turned out. The agent, very probably, received ■ bis impressions from the judicious pa ; lent, who seems to have made no se- I erot ot his opinions. Mr. Towne re jeeted this hasty counsel and informed the agent that he should keep a watch lul eye upon the lad, and he thought it would be time enough to turn him out of school when he made any dis turbance, and that he was entitled to j a fair trial. \\ hen the boy came for i . tne first time to recite bis lesson, and i j had gotten through, Mr. T. told him to i shut liis LODIV. JI O did so, but instant- j ly recoiled and dodged iiis head, as it he expected a blow. The teacher in quired what was the matter. Tli e boy replied that he supposed he should be beaten; and being a-ked it lie had been I accustomed to such usage, ho replied i in the affirmative. Mr. T. then quiet- ; . ed his alarm, and assured him lie had I nothing to fear, so long as he conduct ed himseit well, and encouraged him by Yh^manner ofV4eiv!
