liuiaance of Farm Buildings.
V,'e ure confident that too many farmers
neglect to insure their buildings. In citiea
and towns the man who does not insure
his property is the exception and is gener
ally, considered improvident. It is true
that farm buildings are iess liable to be
destroyed by fire than those in cities, but
it is equally true that when once on fire
there is but little hope of saving them
A careless smoker, throwing his unburued
but fired tobacco upon a buDch of hay or
straw, the dropping of a candle, the expio
SKID of a lamp, have caused the destruction
of many baros and sheds containing not
only the hay and grain of a whole season's
labor, but valuable animals, and the cho'cest
of the farm machinery. Many a house
has been burned from explosions of kero
sene lamps, and from careless use of matches
among children. It is useless to euuruer- j
ate ali the chances of disastrous fires, even
in the country, where also incendiarism is
not unknown.
It is the duty of the provident farmer
to tike all posaibie precautious against loss
by the great devouring element, for be has
no steam lire engines and finely organized
lire department to work agaiost its ravages.
A few buckets of water thrown by his
uwrn hands, or, possibly, the aid of a few I
neighbors, is all that he has to oppose it.
We Lave no particular insurance com
pany to name in this connection, nor is
this item suggested by any agent or per- '
son connected with an insurance company.
We merely write it because we wish to
awaken our readers, who have no insurance
upon their property, to a realizing sense
that it is better to pay a small tax. annual
ly, to a reliable organization of this kind,
which in case of fire will step in and bear
the loss, than to withhold it lrom parsimo
nious motives and, possibly, in a single
night be stripped of one half their worldly
possessions.— Prairie Farmer.
Bat Variety of Fowls. —The Scottish j
Farmer gives the following estimates as to
the value of several varieties of fowls : I
For chickens for the table—Nothing
like the Ihorkings.
For size of egg—Nothing equal to the
Spanish; but thev do Dot lay very regu j
lai-ly- _
Fur number of eggs—Nothing like the ,
Hamburgs, but the size of egg is small i
compared to the Spanish. The Hamburgs j
lay about eleven months in the year, and I
never sit.
For eggs during very hard frost and
*now—There are nothing like if rah mas.
Hard weather does not setm to affect them, j
and they always look well and 'saucy-like,' '
let the cold be ever so severe.
33. E O X 3? IE S .
Bruises and Felons. —Hot, fresh made j
brine, will relieve a bruise or a felon. The !
sooner applied the better. Kec-p using it '
three or four times a day, until the sore- •
r.ess is all removed.
Ham Toast. —Grate a sufficiency of the
lean of cold ham. Mix some beaten yolk
of egg with a little cream, and thicken it
with a grated ham. Then put the mixture '
into a saucepan over the fire, and let it
simmer awhile. Have ready some slices |
uf bread niceiy toasted (all the crust being !
pared off) and well buttered. Spread it ;
over thickly with the ham mixture, and
send it to table warm.
j
aVrce Breakfast Dish. —Slice a few cold
biscuit, or some dry light bread, fry them
slightly, in a little butter, or nice gravy, i
Heat three or lour eggs, with half a tea ,
cupfull of new milk and a pinch of salt, j
When the bread is hot, pour the eggs over
it and cover for a few miuutes, stir lightly,
so that all tha eggs may be cooked. This j
is a nice dish, besides saving the dried ;
bread.
Bericuk Sponge Cake. —Three eggs,
beat two minutes; and one and a half cup
sugar, beat five minutes; add one cup flour, ]
one teaspoonlul cream of tartar, and beat
two minutes; add half cup cold water, hall
teaspoanful soda, beat one minute; add cup
of flour, a little salt, rose or lemon.
