New Volume and New Series Begin Jan. 1865.
Commence with (lie Sew Volume.
THE ECLECTIC MAGAZINE was commenced in
1844, and has been successfully conducted for the
last twenty years, from that time to the present.
As many "of the numbers are out of print and it is
impossible for the Publisher to supply hack volumes
from the commencement, it is proposed, with the
January number, to begin a new series and anew vol
ume, aud while all tiie essential features of the work
will he retained, some new ones will he adopted which
it is believed will add to the artistic and literary value
of the work.
Notwithstanding the greatly increased cost of pub
lishing the price will still remain the same, and we
trust our friends and patrons will aid us in increasing
our circulation by inducing their friends tocommence
subscriptions with the new series.
The contents of the Eclectic are carefully selected
each month front the entire range of Foreign Quar
terlies, Monthlies and Periodicals.
It aims to give the choicest articles from the pens
of the most eminent foreign writers on topics of gen
eral interest.
Tlie great Questions of the Day, touching
Literature, Morals, Science, Philosophy, aud Art, are
thoroughly and ablv discussed by the most brilliant
and distinguished expositors.
Reviews of the most notable Publica
tions, which from time to time appear, and are so
extended and comprehensive as to give the reader
the finest extracts and a general idea of the whole
work, form a noteworthy feature of the publica
tion. Many of the articles in the foreign periodicals
treat on subjects entirely local, and it is the aim of the
editor to carefully select only those of interest to the
American reader.
The Miscellany Department, containing
brief criticisms of both Foreign and American publi
cations. selections of poetry, scientific and art items,
is made with great care from extensive research and
varied reading, and adds much to the value of the
work.
Each number is embellished with one or more steel
engravings—portraits of eminent men or illustrative
of historical events.
The twelve monthly numbers make three volumes
per year, with indexes aud title pages for binding.

K. v Bvlßw3§iffithe vital forces m tlieir

- ' oaves the system to
v ""-— fall into disorder and
decay. The scrofulous contamination is va
riously caused by mercurial disease, low
living, disordered digestion from unhealthy
food, impure air, filth and filthy habits,
the depressing vices, and, above all, by
the venereal infection. Whatever be its
origin, it is hereditary in the constitution,
descending " from parents to children unto
the third and fourth generation;" indeed, it
seems to be the rod of Him who says, *• I will
visit the iniquities of the fathers upon their
children." The diseases it originates take
various names, according to the organs it
attacks. In the lungs, Scrofula produces
tubercles, and finally Consumption; in the
glands, swellings which suppurate and be
come ulcerous sores; in the stomach and
bowels, derangements which produce indi
gestion, dyspepsia, and liver complaints; on
the skin, eruptive and cutaneous affections.
These, all having the same origin, require the
6atne remedy, viz., purification and invigora
tion of the blood. Purify the blood, and
these dangerous distempers leave you. With
feeble, foul, or corrupted blood, you cannot
have health; with that "life of the flesh"
healthy, you cannot have scrofulous disease.
Ayer's Sarsaparilla
is compounded from the most effectual anti
dotes that medical science has discovered for
this afliieting distemper, and for the cure of
the disorders it entails. That it is far supe
rior to any other remedy yet devised, is
known by all who have given it a trial. That
it does combine virtues truly extraordinary
in their effect upon this class of complaints,
is indisputably proven by the great multitude
of publicly known and remarkable cures it
has made of the following diseases : King's
Evil, or Glandular Swellings. Tumors,
Eruptions, Pimples, Blotches and Sores,
Erysipelas, Rose or St Anthony's Fire,
Salt Rheum, Scald Head, Coughs from
tuberculous deposits in the lungs, White
Swellings, Debility, Dropsy, Neuralgia,
Dyspepsia or Indigestion, Syphilis and
Syphilitic Infections, Mercurial Diseases,
Female Weaknesses, and, indeed, the whole
series of complaints tfiat arise from impurity
of the blood. Minute reports of individual
cases may be found in AYER'S AMERICAN
ALMANAC, which is furnished to the druggists
for gratuitous distribution, wherein may be
learned the directions for its use, and some
of the remarkable cures which it has made
when all other remedies had failed to afford
relief. Those cases are purposely taken
from all sections of the country, in order
that every reader may have access to some
one who can speak to him of its benefits from
personal experience. Scrofula depresses the
vital energies, and thus leaves its victims far
more subject to disease and its fatal results
than are healthy constitutions. Hence it
tends to shorten, and does greatly shorten,
the average duration of human life. The
vast importance of these considerations has
led us to spend years in perfecting a remedy
which is adequate to its cure. This we now
offer to the public under the name of AYER'S
SARSAPARILLA, although it is composed of
ingredients, some of which exceed the best
of Sarsaparilla in alterative power. By its
aid you may protect yourself from the suffer
ing and danger of these disorders. Purge
out the foul corruptions that rot and fester
in the blood, purge out the causes of disease,
and vigorous health will follow. By its pecu
liar virtues this remedy stimulates the vital
functions, and thus expels the distempers
which lurk within the system or burst out
on any part of it.
We know the public have been deceived
by many compounds of Sarsaparilla, that
promised much and did nothing; hut tliev
will neither be deceived nor disappointed in
tliis. Its virtues have been proven by abun
dant trial, and there remains no question of
its surpassing excellence for the cure of the
afflicting diseases it is intended to reach.
Although under the same name, it is a very
different medicine from any other which has
been before the people, and is far more ef
fectual than any other which has ever been
available to them.

Mr. Joseph Swyers—Aftermy best respects

been troubled with chills for the last fifteen
years, some of them so hard that I thought I
could not live over night. I was for days
and nights not able to go out. Last fall they
came on again as usual, and having about
half a bottle of your liniment about the
bouse, I thought I would try it, and took
about 20 drops night and morniDg for some
time. From the time I took it I have never
had one chill, and can say that I never had
used any medicine that "gave so much satis
faction as your liniment. Your ob't servant,

March 28th, 1864.
Mr. J. Swyers: My son had a sore neck
for three months back, for which 1 used your
liniment, and it is a perfect cure, lie also
had a sore leg for two years back; I got one
of your bottles of liniment, which has cured
it soundly.
Yours, respectfully, Charles Mitchell.
FREEDOM FORGE, March 28, 1864.
Mr. Swyers : I recommend your liniment

I had a pain in my side for about 15 years,

but they done me no good, when I heard of
your liniment, tried it, and 1 am thankful to
say it has cured me sound and well; and
for the children I could not do without it.
