22 3 Gr A ZSTTE. LOCAL AFFAIRS. FIRE. —There was an alarm of fire OR Thursday evening, about 5 o'clock, the burning of' Ulrich's chimney in "West Market street. About an hour afterwards another alarm was given, the glare of which proved that a dan gerous fire was in progress in the heart of the town. The stable on the Mc- Cormick property, occupied by Rev. J. S. M(-Murray, was first burning, but speedily communicated to Jacob Bly myer's, and then to E. L. Benedict's across the alley, all of which were totally destroyed with most of their contents except live stock. The brick stable of Geo. Blymyer, though sub ject to a tremendous heat, was saved by the efforts of the Henderson Hose Company and a number of citizens, who worked with untiring zeal, and thus preserved the wooden buildings to the west. Tlvere is no doubt this fire was the work of an incendiary, and designed to destroy the property saved from conflagration in the same ailev last winter. It was remarked by a number of persons that after the first alarm there was a!) unusual disturbance on the streets, both among boys and men, but whether this had any connection with the act of incendiarism, it is of course difficult to tell, though it is certainly suspicious. Be this as it may, we have too much rowdying on the street by boys of all ages, and too much prowling about at night by men and boys for the good of the commu nity; and the sooner the Burgess and Town Council will conclude to place a permanent watchman in each ward and require more attention to preserv ing order in the early part of the evening the better. §6OO would prob ably pay two men as watchmen, and if at all attending to their duties, no taxpayers would regret the additional amount. FREE LECTURE. — Dr. Crane, a physi cian of great celebrity, especially in pulmonary complaints and other dis eases of the human system for which there appears to be no fixed treatment, delivered a free lecture in the Town Hall last evening, on "The true phil osphy of man and the laws of health." The doctor has travelled in Europe and this country for a quarter of a century as a public lecturer, is a pleasant speak er, and gives evidences ot bis skill in understanding the human system of so marvellous a character as almost to surpass belief. lie will remain at the National Ho tel to-day and to-morrow only r , where he may ho consulted.
