The friends and acquaintances arc cordially invited. ADVICE TO VOLUNTEERS. —If you can get any bounty at home, don't credit yourself to cities or other counties. We know personally that all their rep resentations about relief are heartless lies, and we know also that swindlers and thieves there are numerous, and many a man will find himself either robbed or defrauded. Take your own county, arid yourself and family will fare better. FRUITS, VEGETABLES, &C. —E. Swain keeps the finest assortment of the above named articles in town, as well us the largest variety. If you desire vegetables for domestic purposes, fruits or melons for desert, or anything of like nature that is good, go to Swain's, and you cannot go home unsatisfied. Or it you are in want of Soaps, Con fections, Perfumery, or Fancy Articles of any description, he will supply you with the same, and the best at that. Look out for the next arrival of peach es, apples, melons, Ac., &c. U. S. REVENUE.— If Mifflin and Cam bria counties do not show as large an assessment as Blair and Huntingdon it appears from the figures of collec tions made in this district, that Mifflin stands first on the list in amount paid and Cambria second. The collections made in the month of July, 1804, as taken lroru the books of Collector Royer, were as follows; Mifflin county, $26,623 40 Cambria " 21,054 85 Blair " 18,823 42 Hun'ingdon " 10,002 82 Total 882,504 49 ITEMS. —The engine for the furnace lias arrived, and is being put in place, so that the delay caused by its non arrival will no longer prove a barrier to operations. James Galbraith, Esq., lost over 5200 on Friday last, which he supposed had been stolen from him. lie was about paying a note with the money, but upon reach ing in his pocket found his porte minus the needful. A search warrant was issued, and a young man arrested who had just left the employ of Mr. G , but no clue was obtained as to its where abouts, and the case still partakes of mystery. A coal train met with a mishap at Manayunk station the other night, piling three cars on top of each | other, and strange to relate two young fellows—boys we believe—who stole a ride, were found asleep on the top car uninjured and totally ur aware of the accident. Rev. John Leithead preached in the Episcopal church on Sabbath afternoon last. A large she bear was killed on the mountain about four miles up the river on Thursday last by Sam. Morrison. The cubs es taped. The presence of bruin accounts for the disappearance of a number of pigs, &c. Persons who have books belonging to the junior's collection would confer a great favor by turning them over. JOSEPH A. MAJOR. —During a recent visit to Harrisburg, we had opportu nities of witnessing the officii ncy of Mr. Major in conducting the working department of the commissary at Camp Curtin, and of hearing unquali ! tied approbation bestowed on him by the soldiers, who thus far we believe have never found fault with his doings. Mr. M. has in u great measure made himself, having been first employed in slaughtering cattle and weighing out, then from one position to another, un til his services became almost indispen sable. His son George has also be come a fixture in the camp, and little l 'Jo,' much to our surprise, was trans formed from a little scamp to a useful boy. As Camp Curtin is again filling up with patriotic men who go to tight the battles of our country, we have no doubt all will find in Mr. Major and his assistants a disposition to accom modate them regardless of time or labor, and with an eye that will ensure the delivery to the soldier of all that he is justly entitled to. CATERPILLARS. —A small quantity of coal oil applied to caterpillar's nests 'th the end of a feather, will dest roy these pests of fruit trees. Where found on leaves or small branches, the best way ia to cut off the nest and burn them. MATCHES. —As every box or bunch of matches will have to be stamped on and after the Ist of September, we recommend our readers to purchase a supply previous to that time. They ought however to be put away with care, in a dry place, and secured in a box so as to prevent rats or mice from nibbling at the paper covering. FpHE Secretary of the Treasury gives notice that "•subscriptions will be received for Coupon Treasu ry Notes, payable three years from August 15th, 1864, with semi-annual interest at the rate of seven and three-tenths per cent, per annum—principal and in terest both to be paid in lawful money. 1 hese notes wilt l>e convertible at the option of the holder at maturity, into six per cent, gold bearing bonds, payable not less than five nor more than twen ty years from their date, as the government may elect. They will be issued in denominations of SSO, SIOO, SSOO iIGOO and ssooo. and all subscriptions must be for fifty dollars or some multiple of fifty dollars. The notes will be transmitted to the owners free of transportation charges as soon after the receipt of the original Certificates of Deposit as they can be pre pared. As the notes draw interest from August 15, persons making deposits subsequent to that date must pay the interest accrued from date of note to date of de posit. Parties depositing twenty-five thousand dollars and upwards for these notes at any one time, will be al lowed a commission of one quarter of one per cent., which will be paid by the Treasury Department upon the receipt of a bill for the amount, certified to by the officer with whom the deposit was made. No deduc tions for commissions must be made from the de posits. SPECIAL ADVANTAGES OF THIS LOAN. IT IS A NATIONAL SAVINGS BANK, offering a higher rate of interest than any other, and the best security. Any savings bank which pays its depositors in U. S. notes, considers that it is paying in the best circulating me dium in the country, and it cannot pay iu anything better, for its own assets are either in government securities or in notes or bonds payable in government paper. It is equally convenient as a temporary or perma nent investment. The notes can always be sold for within a fraction of their face and accumulated inter est. and are the best security with banks as collaterals for discounts. Convertible into a G per rent. §-20 Bond. In addition to the very liberal interest on the notes fir three years, this privilege of conversion is now worth about three per cent, per annum, for the cur rent rate for 5-20 Bonds is not less than nine per cent, premium, and before the war the premium on six per cent. U. S. stocks was over twenty per cent. It will be sooli thai, the actual profit on this loan, at the pres ent market rate, is not less than ten per cent, per an num. Its Exemption from Stote or Municipal Tax ation. Bui aside from all the advantages we have enumer ated, a special Act ol Congress exempts all bonds and Treasury notes from local taxation. On the average, this exemption is worth about two per cent, tier an num, accordiug to the rate of taxation in various parts of the country. It is believed that no securities offer so great in ducements to lenders as those issued by- the govern ment. In all other forms of indebtedness, the faith or ability of private parties, or stock companies, or separate communities, only, is pledged for payment, while the w hole property of the country is held to se cure the discharge of all the obligations of the United Slates. While the government offers the most liberal terms for its loans, it believes that the very strongest appeal will be to the loyally and patriotism of the people. Duplicate certificates will be issued for all deposits. The party depositing must endorse upon the original certificate the denomination of the notes required, and whether they are to be issued in blank or paya ble to order. When so endorsed it must be left with the officer receiving the deposit, to he forwarded to the Treasury Department.
