Logan Guards uimn the prudjction of the !

liicit of §573 of the amount necessarv to pay
the 65 men enlisted t> the credit of the
borough, at the suui of §l3O each
The quota of the borough under the 500- i
000 call was affixed at 55 thus leaving an
excess of 10 men to be credited on the re- |
cent call of 200,000 more, provided -he deficit
be made up and paid as per contract with
the men enlisting to our credit.

regret to any that a most dishonorable
attempt was made to defraud the Bor
ough of Lewistown of the credit the ;
Logan Guards had, according to their
[own representation as well as that of!
the officers, voluntarily given on be- !
ing re-mustered into the serviee. On
their representation, as will be seen j
in the above list, a number received
the lull bounty and others a portion of j
it, yet in the face of this, new rolls
ft ere tiled at Ilarrisburg crediting these |
; men to different parts of the State !
i hese rolls were afterwards withdrawn,
but our citizens, naturally* indignant
at such conduct, are now determined
to probe the matter to the bottom, and
have the guilty punished, be they
whom they may.
MCVKYTOWN ACADKMV. —This insti
tution is now in charge of Rev. S. J.
HAVES, who, with able assistants, will
use his .best efforts to make it a
! iirst rate Academy and Normal School,
where scholars can be educated to
till all situations in private life, enter
any of the colleges, or receive
; thorough instruction in the art of
teaching, which is annually becoming
a more agreeable and profitable occu
pation. Most of the public schools
are now or will shortly he closed, and
the spring and summer therefore
afford teachers who still acknowledge
to imperfections—and who does not?—
an opportunity for attending a Normal
School where improvement can be
made of the most desirable kind. Mr.
Ilayes comes highly recommended a>
an accomplished teacher, having been
engaged in the business during the
past ten years, during four of which
he had charge of the Latrobe and
Ligonier N< rma! Schools and Acade
mies. Parents, guardians, teachers,
and others ought by all means to
visit such institutions as the above
before going elsewhere.
.RELIGIOUS. —Rev. Strain preached
in the Methodist church on Sunday
morning last, and Rev. Miller Woods
in the Presbyterian. In the evening
the pulpit at the Methodist church was
filled by Rev. Kesler, of the Philadel
phia Conference.
T Intro will be no preaching in the
Lutheran church on Sunday next.
THE WEATHER.— Wednesday cloudy

evening moderate. Friday morning
clear and pleasant, cloudy by noon,
clear in evening. Saturday cloudy
and cool in morning, clear rest of day.

ITEMS. —The Fair for the benefit of
the pastor ot the A. M. R. church, held
last week, netted about forty dollars.
\V e printed sixteen jobs last week,
(one of them 20un handbills,) making
thirty seven from the Ist to the 19th
ot March. This was the heaviest
week s work done in our office for a
long time. We had a visit from a
patent medicine man last week, who
wanted to advertise a column weekly
and a! out half !t column occasionally,
for a year, but we told him we didn't
make contracts for that much matter
for that length ot time, at any price,
as a half column or so is "news" enough
for our readers. We sent him to the
Patent Medicine Democrat down
street, where we presume the adver
tisement will duly appear and he cited
as an evidence of " want of room for
readiw-g matter." A calf raised by
Wm. Russell, Fsq., four weeks old on
Saturday a week, killed by Col. But
ler last week, weighed 125 lbs. This
must have been one of the calves we
read about on the return of the prodi
gal. Some rogue threw a large rock
through the skylight of MeFwens'

Notice to Owners of Unseated
Lands.
r IMIE Commissioners request all owners of
£. Unseated Lands, whether regulariv as
sessed or not, immediately to furnish them
with the number of acres, name of warrantee,
and whom adjoining, for the purpose of reg
istering the. same in this office, so as to avoid
all difficulty hereafter in advertising such
lands at Treasurer's Sales. At present it is
impossible to tell whether certain lands are
regularly assessed, as the transcripts do not
give the names of warrantees. It may not
be amiss to state that owners of Unseated
lands are required by law to make return
as above, and that on faiiure thereof the Com
missioners are directed to add four times
the amount of assessed thereon.
