    THE BITE ■
LOCAL AFFAIRS.
A lecture on Temperance will
be delivered in the Town Hall on
Saturday evening, March sth, by John
Q. Detwiler, Traveling Lecturer of the
Grand Lodge of Good Templars of
Pennsylvania. The public are invited
to attend.
THE LITTLE FOLKS. —Some weeks
ago sundry little girls and boys sent a
lot of what are called Housewives, &c.
to the siek and wounded soldiers in a
Philadelphia hospital, with the names
of the donors, and last week their
hearts were made glad and exultation
of the most buoyant kind exhibited,
by the reception of quite a number of
letters, returning thanks for the gifts
received. Many of them were writ
ten in eloquent and feeling language,
others with a Christian fervor that
showed the disciples of Jesus of Naza
reth were not so rare in the array as
many suppose, and nearly all imbued
with patriotic sentiments. Truly we
cannot do too much for our soldiers,
and if all at home would but contribute
towards cheering them, whether in the
tented field or in hospital, how many
would carry with them reminiscenses
of acts of kindness, no matter how
little, which are and can only be ap
preciated in circumstances similar to
theirs.
OUR JOBBING BUSINESS. —We had
another unexampled run of jcb work
during lite past month, having done no
less than 42 jobs from the Ist to the
29th of February —making seventy
seven from the Ist of January. As
an evidence of what our hands and
presses can do, we may instance Mon
day's work: Two forms blanks were
printed on the Newbury Jobber, three
sale bills on the Washington Hand
Press, and nearly 900 copies of the
outside form of the Gazette worked
off on the Adams' Power Press—all
between 11 a. m. and sp. m. People
have evidently found out where work
can be done, cheaply, neatly, and ex
peditiously, and therefore call at the
Gazette office. Of course we are
thankful tor their patronage, and shall
always endeavor to merit it.
ITEMS. —Most of the ice on the river
has disappeared within the last few
days. The debt on the Presbyte
rian church, amounting to 52030, was
paid off last week by voluntary sub
scriptions. Notwithstanding the
dead set the copperheads made at the
Rev. J. Guyer, on account of his being
a too good Union man, his salary was
made up with less difficulty than gen
erally occurs in the Methodist church.
He carries with him the good wishes
of all the live Methodists in his church,
and Union men of all denominations
probably without a single exception.
Cogley's emporium of fashion,
magnetic telegraph office and news
paper depot has been removed to tho
elegant row of buildings in West Mar
ket street, extending from the diamond
to Major Buoy's dwelling. The de
mand for houses, especially for those
renting for about 850 per ennum, is
great, and shows that sundry vacant
and almost unproductive lots could be
profitably improved by the erection of
small dwellings. The question as to
the legal width of the street leading
to McCurdy's ought to be settled before
it is altogether fenced up. If the coun
cil would require the property holders
there to lay pavements, as they have
the undoubted right to do, there would
now hardly be ten feet of roadway
left. Linn, the supposed robber of
R. G. Shaw, R. A. Means, and other
parties, about a year ago, is now in
jail charged with horse stealing.
A son of Mr. Tenpenny, who
got hold of some matches, set a bed on
fire on Thursday last, and but for its
timely discovery might have caused a
serious conflagration. Put your match
es in a tin box, and hang it out of
reach of children, and whenever you
find child, boy or girl, with a match,
give him or her a good spanking.
Skaf Bounties of 8200 are now offered

Swain of this place, who has been in
actual command of company H, 49th
Pa. regiment, since Captain Freeburn
was wounded at Fredericksburg, was
commissioned last week as Captain.
Thi6 is a deserved promotion of one of
our citizens, who entered the service

by uniform good conduct rose from the
I ranks to his present position.
fetrMaj. A. G. Hamilton, of the
12th Kentucky Cavalry, one of
the escaped Libby prisoners, was in
our town on Monday night, lie is on
a visit to his friends, J. Hamilton,
Esq., in Lewistown, and A. W. Graft,
Milroy. He will be in town again this
week. He was one of the working
party of 14, and the second man out
of the hole. Col. Rose, of the 77th
Pennsylvania was the first out, but
was recaptured in the streets of Rich
mond. Maj. Hamilton was with him
but succeeded in running the guards;
it was a little after seven o'clock in
the evening, and the guards fired 11
shots at him, but he got behind several
ladies who chanced to be walking on
the pavement. Tho guards did not
wish to lire among them, and by that
means he escaped out of the city, and
after six days of extreme trial and
suffering, reached Fortress Monroe,
coatless and shoeless. Uncle Ben.
treated thein first rate, gave them an
entertainment and then sent them on
to Washington. Twenty-eight of them
waited on the President, just as thev
arrived from Libby, after which they
went to Baltimore and procured new
clothing.
