    THE
skillful housekeeper says that the
unpleasant odor arising from boiling ham,
cabbage, &e., is completely corrected by
throwing whole red peppers into the pot
—at the same time the flavor of the food
is improved. It is said that pieces of
charcoal will produce the same effect.
Crackers. —One pint of water, one tea
cup of butter, one teaspoon full of soda,
two of cream tartar, flour enough to make
as stiff as buscuit. Let them stand in tie
oven until dried through. They do not
need pounding.
5?%, Here is something new for the
lovers of cabbage, extracted from the Lon
don Spectator: Take the stalks, scrape
them, leave them in water all night, and
next day cook them like vegetable marrow.
It will be found delicious.
Lijht Cake for Break fast or Tea. —One
cup of sugar, Two eggs, half a cup of melt
ed butter, a cupful and a half of tnilk,
two teapoonsful cream of tartar mixed
with the flour, one teaspoon of soda, flour
enough to make a stiff batter. It will
bake in tweuty minutes if the oven is hot.
Double Heeling Stockings —Take two
balls of yarn, and on the right side knit
one stitch with one thread, and the next
with another, and so on across the needle.
This alternatively makes a loop on the in
side, which renders the heel very thick
and durable, without making it any wider.
On the wrong side, take both threads to
gether and knit as one, in the usual way.
Flaxseed Sirup. —The Rural American
says this excellent remedy for a cough is
made thus: Roil one ounce of flaxseed
in a quart of water for half an hour, strain
and add to the liquid the juice of two
lemons and half a pound of rock caudy.
If the cough be accompanied by weakness
and a loss of appetite, add half an ounce
of powdered gum arabic. Set this to sim
mer for halfan hour, stirring it occasionally.
Take a wine-glassful when the cough is
troublesome.
Mixture for a Cough or Cold. —Soak a
teacupful of flaxseed at night. In the
morning put into a kettle two quarts of
water, a handful of liquorice root split up,
one quarter of a pound of raisins broken
in half. Let them boil till the strength is
thoroughly extracted; then add the flax
seed, which have been previonsly soaked.
Let all t oil half an hour or more, watch
ing and stirring that the mixture may not
bum. Then strain and add lemon juice
and sugar.
