THE 3 & 3 35* 321 * Keeping Grapes. —lnto the bottom of a small keg or nail cask put a layer of grape leaves fresh from the vines. On these carefully place a layer of sound, ripe, dry grapes, then leaves and grapes in alter nate layers, till the keg is full. Head up the cask, and bury it in some well drained ground, below the depth of the frost. Like other things excluded from the light and air, they will change rapidly on ex posure, and hence, when a keg is opened and they are found good, use them freely. Preventing the Fracture of Glass Chim neys. —The glass chimneys which are now in such extensive use, not only for oil lamps, but also for the burners of oil and ceal gas, vary frequently break, and notcnly expose to danger those who are ne~r them, but occasionally very great expense and incon venience, particularly those who are resi dent in the country. The breaking of these glasses very often arises from knots in the glass, where it is less perfectly an nealed, and also from an inequality of thick ness at their lower end, which prevents them from expanding uniformly by heat. The evil arising from inequality of thick ness may be cured by making a cut with a diamond in the bottom of the tube. Sweet Pickled Quinces. —The most com mon uses of quinces is as sweet preserves. Tbey also answer a good purpose when sliced up and mixed in small quantities with apple sauce, giving the whole a pleas ant, aromatic flavor. They make a good pickle, also. Boil in vinegar with sugar, and add cloves, cinnamon, &c., to suit the taste. The best way is to pare and quarter them and cut out the cores. Boil 10 pounds of fruit, adding 5 pounds of sugar, and about 4 pints of vinegar, one ounce of stick cinnamon, and 1£ ounce of cloves. When well boiled, put in a jar and pour over the syrup.
