AGBiennuiAL Culture of Fruit. At the late Horticultural meeting in Cos ton, Col. Wilder, in the chair, there was quite an interesting discussion on traits. — The chairman made an opening address, in which he said, very truly, that to sue eeed in the culture of iruit. there must, be appropriate soil, a caieful selection ol har dy sorts suited to the latitude, and follow ed by proper treatment. Some varieties of peats were adapted to a wide range of country, others belonging to a more cir cumscribed area. He said, however, that the Harriett succeeded wherever any pear 'an !>o raised • and we uiav add, mak ing it. indeed, all things considered, the peal of the country or the world In re J erring to dwarf pears, ('ol. \Y ilder said that he bad found the \ icurof Wakefield, Louis Bonne de Jersey, Belle Lucrative, and Urbanist, not to have failed in their crops for thirty years, thus showing hardi ness and perfect adaption to a latitude as high as that of Massachusetts- lie thought the climate of California surpasses all otli ers for the culture of fruit. In Knglund, Bouic dwarf pear trees, which had been planted forty years, looked as though they : might survive forty more. We have upon our own premises such trees about two feet in circumference, transplanted fifteen years ! ago, when they were at least two years old, now looking as robust as ever, and hearing j good crops annually, but some years more abundantly than others. This year all our dwarf trees have been loaded down with j bloom, and from the indications of the al- . ready swelling fruit, the prospects vi a great I crop were never more promising. Col. Wilder denounces grafting on suck- : ers as a curse to any orchard. As to ap- J pies, he thought with other gentlemen who expressed the same opinion, that the best varieties for general cultivation, were the : Baldwin, Rhode Island Greening, Box- j hurry Russet and Tahnan's Sweeting. Dr. Coring had found lime employed in com bination with pruning, very successful in j renovating old orchards or old fruit trees, j Orchards, he said, could be readily planted in land which could not, be tilled for ordi- j nary farm crops, provided the soii was j good, thus saving more even land and se- i curing the same end. There was one or two points, touching the cultivation ot fruit, especially appics, pears and cherries, which wo should like to have referred to. These are, Ist, whether all kinds of standard trees could not be grown as low-branched as dwarfs are, and allowed to grow in height not. say over twelve feet, and be as profitable as the larger standards, and whether they would not come into bearing much earlier? 2d, whether such a system would not he a safeguard against the sun by the surrounJ ing branches? Our own humble exper ience is, that the hot sun acting directly upon the trunks oi trees, in the early part of the season, is the main cause of the blight. Dwarfs we believe arc never blight ed. \\ e have long thought that we permit our fruit trees to grow too tall, exposing the trunk at all seasons injuriously, while the difficulty of gathering the fruit is vast ly increased. We should be glad to have the opinion of so experienced and intelli gent a man as Col. Wilder, on this subject. The subject of covering raspberry canes in winter was touched upon at the meeting referred to, and Col. Wilder remarked that he hoped that the simple process of laying down the canes as well as grape vines, 4 upon the surface of the ground, would prove ample protection to them from the cold and piercing winds.' As to the canes we do not believe this; but do as to the grape vines, and tliiuk it the true plan ev erywhere for them. Our raspberry canes, not entirely hardy, and none of them are except natives, and some of them not whol ly—wc prune, lay down and cover slightly with soil, just enough to make them invisi ble , and they come out splendidly. If they are covered too deeply, they are liable to sprout permaturely, and when exhumed would be subject to iniury even from a slight frost. — Germantoicn Telegraph. A Good Farm Fence Take good straight rails from 15 to 20 tect long, and posts from 6 to 6$ feet long, and sto 7 inches in diainater. Chestnut is good. After you have heaped up a heap of brush to burn, put the ends of the posts you are going to set in the ground, on the the heap, and then set the brushes on fire, and char the ends of the posts, which will prevent them from rotting so soon, taking care not to burn them too much. Then dig the holes from 2 to 'l\ feet deep and set the posts and wedge them firmly with stones and dirt, The rails of a pannel should be of equal length. Then have one man take hold of each end ola rail, and spike it to the post; 4 rails hiis enough. Three men could build a fence very fast —one to dig the holes, the other two to build the fence. A fence built in this way is very strong—the rails not liable to be thrown by unruly cattle, takes up very lit tle room and needs no braces—plow close up to each side if you wish, and a very good fence to look at. Instead of having bars at the entrance of your fields, make a gate in this way:— Take two pieces of joists four inches square, and as high as you wish for the end posts. J hen take live strips of inch board for the I slats, the lower one being the widest, the next a little narrower, and so on, the top one being the narrowest. Then mortice holes in the end posts, and insert the slats ar.d ptu them. Take two strips for braces on on each side. Fasten one end of the brace near the heel of the end post on which the gait is going to swing, and the j oilier end near the top of the opposite post and nail them to the slats.— Country Gen tleman. JULES HAUEL, F.s., the well known perfumer, of Chestnut Streer, Philadelphia, whose citotce products are found at almost every toilet, says: " I am happy to *y of your CATHARTIC PILLS, that I have found them a better family medicine, for common use, than any other within my knowledge. Many of my friends have realized marked benefits from them, and co incide with me in believing that they possess extraordinary virtues for driving out diseases and curing the sick. They are not only effectual, but safe and pleasant to be taken qualities which must make them valued by the public, when they are known." The venerable Chancellor WAKDLAW writes from Bal timore, 15th April, 1854: " Da. J. C. AVER fir: 1 have taken your Pills with great benefit, for the listlessnese, languor, foes of appetite, and Bilious headache, which has of late years overtaken me in the spring. A few doses of your Pills cured me. I have used your Cherry Pectoral many years in my family for coughs and colds with unfailing success. You make medicines which cure: and 1 feel it a pleasure to commend you for the good you have done and are doing." JOHN F. BEATTY, Esq., Sec. of the Penn. Railroad Co., says: " Pa. R. R. "Sir: I take pleasure in adding my testimony to the efficacy of your medicines, having derived very material benefit from the use of both your Pectoral and Cathartic Pills. lam never without thein in my family, nor shall I ever consent to be, while my means will procure them." The widely renowned S. S. STEVENS, M. 0., of Went worth, N. H., writes: " Having used your CATHARTIC PILLS in my practice, I certify from experience that tliey are an invaluable purga tive. In cases of disordered functions of the liver, causing headache, indigestion, costiveness, and the great variety of diseases that follow, tliey are a surer remedy than any other. In all cases where a purgative remedy is required, I confidently recommend these Pills to the public, as superior to any other I have ever found. They are sure in their operation, and perfectly safe —qualities which make them an invaluable article for public use. I have for many years known your Cherry Pectoral as the best Cough medicine in the world ; and these Pills are in no wise inferior to that admirable preparation for the treat ment of diseases." " Acton, Me., Mov. 25, 1853. " D. J. C. AVER Dear Sir: 1 have been afflicted from my birth with scrofula in its woret form, and now, after twenty years' trial, and an untold of amount of suffering, have been completely cured in a few weeks by your Pills. With what feelings of rejoicing I write can only be imagined when you realize what I have suffered, and how long. " Never until now have I been free from this loathsome disease in some shape. At times it attacked my eyes, and made me almost blind, besides the unendurable pain ; at others it settled in the scalp of my head, and destroyed my hair, and has kept me partly bald all my days ; sometimes it came out in my face, and kept it for months a raw sore. " About nine weeks ago I commenced taking your Ca thartic Pills, and now am entirely free from the~complaint My eyes are well, my skin is fair, and my hair has com menced a healthy growth ; all of which makes me feel already a new person. " Hoping this statement may be the means ot conveying information that shall do good to others, I am, with every sentiment of gratitude, Yours, &r., MARIA RICKER." " I have known the above named Maria Ricker from her childhood, and her statement is strictly true. ANDREW J. MESERVE, Overseer of the Portsmouth Manufacturing Co." CAFT. JOEL PRATT, of the ship Marion, writes from Boston, 20th April, 1854: " Your Pills have cured me from a bilious attack which arose from derangement of the Liver, which had become very serious. I had failed of any relief by my Physician, and from every remedy I could try ; but a few doses of your Pills have'completely restored'me to health. I have given them to my children for worms, with the best ef fects. They were promptly cured. I recommended them to a friend for costiveness, which had troubled him for months ; he told me in a few days they had cured hint. You make the best medicine in the world ; and I am free to say so." Read this from the distinguished Solicitor of the Supreme Court, whose brilliant afiilities have made him well known, not only in this but the neighboring States. " Mew Orleans, sth April, 1854. " Sir: I have great satisfaction in assuring you that myself and family have been very much benefited by your medicines. My wife was cured, two years since, of a se vere and dangerous cough, by your OHESRV PECTORAL, and since then has enjoyed perfect health. My children have several times been cured from attacks of the Influ enza and Croup by it. It is an invaluable remedy for these complaints. Your CATHARTIC PILL 9 have entirely cured me from a dyspepsia and costiveness, which has grown upon me for some years,— indeed, this cure is much more important, from the fact tliv I had failed to get relief from the best Physicians which this section of the country affords, and from any of the numerous reme dies I had taken. " You seem to us. Doctor, like a providential blessing to our family, and you may well suppose we are not un mindful of it. Yours respectfully, LEAVITT THAXTER." " Senate Chamber, Ohio, April sth, 1854. " DR. J. C. AVER Honored Sir: I have made a thor ough trial of the CATHARTIC PILLS, left me by your agent, and have been cured by thein of the dreadful Rheumatism tinder which he found me suffering. The first dose re lieved me, and a few subsequent doses have entirely removed the disease. I feel in better health now than for some years before, which I attribute entirely to the effects of your CATHARTIC PILLS. Yours with great respect, LUCIUS B. METCALF."
