I'atrons and Friends, another year
Has gone to join the shadowy train
That filli the kingdom of the past,
Since last yon heard your Carrier s strain,
WLich welcomed it with hearty cheer,*
Weeping the while the vanished year,
Its hope and joy, its grief and wrong,
At once a dirge, and cradle song!
Twelve fleeting mouths of days and nights,
Of golden suns, and silver lights,
Have wrought their change of good and ill,
But let the Carrier faithful still,
Ready to serve you as at first,
Though Governments like bubbles burst.
Reward hiui then for what he brings,
And hearken to the song he sings ;
It is not long, it shall be clear,
As suits the history of the year.
It was the custom heretofore,
To paint the changes of the time,
Making the seasons come and go,
Like pageants in his pictured rhyme.
Old Winter like a crownless King,
And like a maid, the tender Spring;
Summer, a ripe, luxurious dame,
Her sunny forehead bound with leaves;
And Autumn in his broad domain.
A reaper with his golden sheaves 1
To-day demands a different strain,
A wider range, a deeper thought,
That shall reflect the moral year,
Where man was mighty, nature Daught.
It was a memorable year,
That will appear on history's page
Among the foremost blazoned there,
Perhaps an epoch of the age !
What sec we on the crowded stage,
A tragedy, or comic play ?
Both, blent in one, with many scenes,
Too many to revive to day.
Select we then from out the mass,
What best shall represent the year :
A scene or two; the first is set,
The proper actors will appear.
A year ago, when traitors ruled,
In "democratic" name,
All saw our destiny was lost,
Our honor and our fame,
Unless the people in their might
Hose up in all their power,
And hurl'd the villains to the earth,
As demons of the hour.
So stood the country, when the inaa
The people had elected,
Rose up and in bold voice proclaimed,
" The traitore are detected."
Behold ! The patriot band who stood
O.i Sumter's towering wall,
Where waved the banner of the free,
Upheld by one and all.
Few were they who by it stood,
But hearts and hands were true,
And would have shed their best blood
Ere yielding to the traitor crew.
Then hunger came, but still they fought
As freemen only fight,
Nerved on by men like Anderson
Who battle for the right \
And only when all hope was gone
Came down that glorious flag,
And in its place a "snake" unfurled —
Carolina's dirty rag.
Fust flew the news o'er hill and dale,
Through gorge and mountain glen,
And in answer to the call came forth
Six hundred thousand men.
A few with TORY look and word,
The patriot tide would stay,
Rut the people frown'd and said,
" Beware of what you say !"
Still onward swelled the rebel host,
Fighting for the Nigger cause,
Regardless that to them it cost
Peace, Liberty and Laws.
And strauger still, while they profess'd,
With sword, gun and trigger,
To stay the " Abolition North,"
Br&n/ traitor freed a nigjer
So passed the seasons, kind and bland,
O'er fields of bloody strife,
Which insane acts of rebel bands
Have kindled into life.
And many a home's made desolate
By kindred now laid low,
Who found a soldier's end and grave
Where Potomac's water's flow.
Sad thought it is that this fair land,
The refuge of the free,
Should nourish such a hellish band—
Can it be Heaven's decree?
If so, cheer up, for no free soil,
Has felt the ills of war,
But only those who wax and toil
Slav'ry to spread afar.
" Ktag Cotton" may call on its Lords,
Bow down its pliant kuec—
All will be vain, the word is writ,
AMERICA MUST BE FREE I
Then let England's proud Queen
Beware of the day,
When she marshals her leuions
In battle array
'Gainst freedom and right—
Lest the Celt and ihe Gaul,
The HUBS and the Scott,
The Swiss and the Teuton
With old feelings forgot,
Rise up in their might,
And under our Eagle—
Proud bird of the sky—
Lay low tbe foul despots
With aid frotn on high.
May the curse of all freemeu—
May famine and blight—
May war's desolation
On all those alight,
Who come, as comes England,
Like gambler or knave,
To succor rebellion
. Aud the North to enslave.
Down, down, with all party—
• Down with all strife-
Let us arm with the riSe,
The scythe, and the knife :
Let us first send the traitors,
From Breck down to Bell,
With Davis and Beauregard,
. To the confines of boll.
And then come ye despots,
Come in your might,
Bold Freemen await you
With hearts in the right,
Who planting their banner
Where banner should be,
Will send forth the shout
THE WORM* SHAW BE FREE .
Glorious Triumph over all Opposition.
