A Certain Cure for Colds. —A remedy
never known to fail: Three cents' worth
licorice, three cents' worth rock candy,
three cents' worth gum arabic. Put them
in a quart of water, simmer them till thor
oughly dissolved, then add three cents'
worth, of paregoric, and a like quantity of
antimonial wine. Let it cool, and sip when
ever the cough is troublesome. It is pleas
ant, infallible, cheap, and good. Its cost is
only fifteen cents.

Household Maxims.
A short needle uiakcs the most expedi
tion in plain sewing.
Sitting to sew by candle-light by u table
with a dark cloth on it is injurious to the
eye-sight, W hen no other remedy presents
itself, put a sheet of white paper before you.
Kat slowly and you will not over eat.
Keeping the feet warm will prevent head
aches.
Always lay your table neatly whether
you have company or not.
Put your balls or reels of cotton into lit
tle bags, leaving the ends out.
Whatever you may choose to give away,
always be sure to keep your temper.
Feather beds should be opened every 3d
year, the ticking well dusted, soaped and
waxed, the feathers dressed and returned.
Charcoal, when burning, should have an
uncovered vessel of boiling water over it,
the vapor of which will counteract the del
eterious fumes.
Powdered charcoal will remove smells,
impurities, &c., from old glass vessels, after
the grosser parts have been scoured off with
sand and potash.
Persons of defective sight, when thread
ing a needle, should hold it over something j
white, by which the sight will he assisted, j
Heading by candle-light, place the candle j
behind you, that the rays may pass over '
your shoulder on to the book. This will
relieve the eyes.
